The "identical" long gowns of Dayana Mendoza and Jennifer Barrientos, Miss Philippines Universe 2008

I was browsing video clips of Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam when I took notice an odd similarity on the gowns of Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza, who eventually won the title, and Miss Philippines Jennifer Barrientos, who didn't make the semi-final.

I am expecting you will disagree with me since most of us are very critical when it comes to the dresses and wardrobes of any Miss Philippines titleholders. Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated (BPCI)has the reputation of providing mediocre or outdated long gowns to their girls. I still remember the comments of fans on Jennifer's gown during the pageant - the gown was a mess and 80-ish.

Miss Venezuela Organization, on the other hand, under the leadership of pageant guru, Osmel Sousa, is known with its stylish and fashion-forward long gowns. The organization gives their girls only the best wardrobes in the pageant.

So, you might probably think that comparing the gown of a Miss Philippines to a Miss Venezuela is an insult because it is like putting a diamond side by side with a stone. But try to see the video clips after the pictures.

This is the yellow gown of Miss Venezuela, Dayana Mendoza.

This is the Alfredo Barraza gown of Miss Philippines, Jennifer Barrientos. It is very obvious, this gown is much inferior with that of Dayana.

Now look on their evening gown presentations during the preliminary competitions.

Here is Jennifer with her evening gown in motion.

Here is Dayana with her evening gown in motion.

So, what have you seen? The gowns are identical onstage except for the colors. The effects or the amount of lights on the stage could also be the reason. Jennifer carried the gown well. She had a fantastic presentation although the gown was a trash. But definitely, Dayana had a better performance in a better gown.

While Jennifer was trying to be regal and sophisticated in her moves, Dayana opted to be more fluid with her flirty walks. She was like dancing the way she swayed her hips and her shoulders. She also gave emphasis on the slits of her gowns with her twirl and the position of her legs when she paused.

Venezuela is losing its Miss World Charisma

With 17 titles - 6 Miss Universe, 5 Miss World, 5 Miss International and 1 Miss Earth - without a doubt, Venezuela is the the leading powerhouse in beauty pageants!

This decade was very fruitful for this South American nation.

In Miss Universe, they only missed the semifinals twice - 2004 and 2006. But these exclusions were rewarded by back to back titles in 2008 and 2009. Aside from that, all remaining placements of Venezuela were in the Top 5.

Venezuela had some struggles in the first years of Miss Earth. In 2005, Alexandra Braun became the first Venezuelan to enter the semifinals and eventually won. Since then, Venezuela has placed every year.

Miss International proved to be the best pageant for Venezuela this decade - winning 3 titles, 1 first runner up and 4 semifinalists - are proofs that Venezuela occupies the number one spot for the Tokyo-based pageant.

Miss World - this decade they had 5 placements - and the highest was in 2002 - Goizeder Azua's Top 10 finish! Compared to their performance in the 90's, it was really poor. Two winners (1991 and 1995), one 1st runner up (1999), three 2nd runners up (1990, 1992, 1994) and two 4th runners up (1993 and 1996). They only missed the Top 10 in 1997 and 1998 - and the reason was because Venezuela didn't send their national winners to Miss World. This decade, Venezuela did not even make it to the final cut.

What could have been the reasons?

Vanessa Cardenas, Andriena Prieto and Goizeder Azua were not crowned in Miss Venezuela finals instead, Osmel staged a small pageant for Miss World Venezuela 2000 - 2002. Among the three, Goizeder was the most refreshing beauty - something that Miss World is looking for.

In 2003, Miss World Venezuela was back in the top prizes - Valentina Patruno won and became a semifinalist in Miss World 2003.

Andrea Milroy and Susan Carrizo failed in 2004 and 2005. Their beauties aren't really suited for MW.

The Miss World Organization announced that Miss World 2006 would be held in Poland on September 30, three months ahead of schedule. The Miss Venezuela Org. decided to return to the "emergency" system used in 2000-01 and hold a special pageant, Miss World Venezuela 2006. Federica Guzman was the undisputed favourite for the national title, causing the usual controversy, but her performance at Miss World broke the failure streak of her country to classify into the semifinals since the participation of Valentina Patruno in 2003.

Claudia Suarez and Hannelly Quintero continued the streak. But Milagors Veliz broke it again!

Why? Claudia and Hannelly were young and beautiful, Milagros was a bad choice - she was a complete opposite of the two.

The main reason why Venezuela is losing its force in Miss World is because MVO gives a higher importance to Miss Universe than Miss World. And most of the times, their MU delegates were better than their MW representatives. But Julia was kinda fair not to exclude beautiful ladies like Valentina, Federica, Claudia and Hannelly.

Julia doesn't want to be second.

Expect this, if Miss Vnezuela Organization will not do something with it, don't expect the 6th Venezuelan Miss World to be crowned.

Julia is not Eric Morley. Now that the rivalry between Trump and Morley is getting more intense, Venezuela will never advance in the final 5 of Miss World.

For Miss Venezuela Organization - simply send a woman who is beautiful, sweet, young - not a drag queen nor a too polished woman that is more of a Miss Universe material.

Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez's new hairtsyle

Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela decided to cut her hair. She was seen in Paris, together with Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton, with her shorter hair. What can I say? The new hairstyle perfectly suits her beauty. She now looks more beautiful and younger to me. Look at her in that picture above right before she was crowned as Miss Universe in Bahamas and compared her looks with this picture below.

Voila! She is definitely more stunning now. Agree? Oh, well, I just love her more now. And because of this, I am not going to complain anymore why Venezuela had a back-to-back victory. As days pass by, Stefania is winning my heart.

Miss USA Kristen Dalton Bitches Misses Venezuela and Netherlands

Miss USA Kristen Dalton is getting negative publicities in some message boards for beauty pageants lately. Some fans have been convinced that the  lady who beat Carrie Prejean, the better choice, is such a bitch. Kirsten apparently insulted Miss Netherlands Avalon Chanel-Weyzig and Miss Venezuela Stefan Fernandez.

Last few days, a rumour was circulated that during the welcome party at the Balmoral Club, Miss USA made rude remarks about the dress of Stefania. Miss Venezuela learned about the remarks afterwards but she just ignored it. Some of the girls were happy for Stefania for not stooping down on the level of Kristen.

The source of this news was one of the girls from Central America who was sharing a table with Kristen. She relayed the incident to her mentors and it was leaked then in the forums.

Just today, we got another incident involving Kristen and this time with Miss Netherlands Avalon Chanel-Weyzig.

Avalon made a post in her twitter account. The half Indonesian beauty queen said that Miss USA approached her.

"Miss USA came to meet me and the first thing she said very spontanious, from the Netherlands, wow, so you smoke weeds??? LOL only tourists do!" That's the unedited post from Avalon.

On the other hand, Miss Australia rachael Finch revealed that Kristen talks in her sleep.

Asian girls at the Swimsuit presentation

Last night was a swimsuit presentation of all the candidates competing in Bahamas for the Miss Universe 2009. Asia is I think one of the strongest batches this year, if not the strongest, but there is something funny with the photos of the delegates from this region.

Their mouths were wide open while they were parading in their swimsuits. Basing my comments on the pictures, Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo and Miss Japan Emiri Miyasaka were the best. They look regal and poised.

Miss Vietnam Vo Hoang Yen who is said to have a killer catwalk is a big disappointment, not with her catwalk but with her body.

Aside from Miss Philippines, Miss India Ekta Choudhary also donned a one-piece swimwear. Most of the Asians sported two-piece and I guess this was a wrong choice for them. This is only my opinion.

Were they imitating Miss Venezeula Stefania Fernandez who had the biggest of them?

Gowns of Venezuela and Puerto Rico are Imitations from Ellie Saab

Puerto Ricans and Venezuelans look like having a word war in pageant-related message boards regarding their delegates' long gowns. Both parties are claiming, with evidence of course, that the gowns of both Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela and Mayra Matos of Puerto Rico are second rate copycat of Ellie Saab's, a famous designer, gowns.

I guess the Puerto Ricans first discovered the Ellie Saab gown in which Venezuela patterned their dress. To extract a vengeance, the Venezuelans tried so hard to research about the gown of Mayra. Fortunately, they were able to uncover also a gown which is so similar with Mayra's.

The funny thing in this exchange of words is that both gowns were copied from works of one famous designer.

Puerto Rico and Venezuela are one of the countries who take pageant seriously. Both have five Miss Universe winners in their caps.

Below are pictures of Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez's gown and the original gown. I took this from a Puerto Rican message board.

Below is Miss Puerto Rico's long gown and the original Ellie Saab gown. This was taken from a Venezuelan forum.

Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez is not mingling with Latin American candidates?

Is it true that Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez is not mingling with the Latin American girls? They say Stefania prefers to mix with the European candidates. Allegedly, she is avoiding the Latinas.

If this is true, probably Stefania would like to identify herself with her other heritage. She is a mix of Polish, Russian, Ukrainian and Venezuelan.

I have a feeling that Venezuela might not make it to the Top 15 this year just like in 2004 when Ana Karina Anez Delgado broke the 20-year winning streak of her country and in 2006 when Jictzad Nacarid Viña Carreño failed to advance. But the sash factor might work well on her also.

I've said that Stefania might not advance because I am not yet impressed with her photos and interview.

Her interview at the Miss Universe official website is so disappointing. She moves her hands too much which can distract the judges. There are also photos of her in which she looks not beautiful although most of them are stunning especially in her swimsuit picture. Her gown is also too busy. The design is too much to appreciate.

But if she choose to change her gown at the preliminary, I might be proven wrong.

Where is Minorka Mercado Now?

Have you ever wondered where is Minorka Mercado now?

Minorka is 1993 Miss Venezuela who represented this beauty superpower in 1994 Miss Universe pageant in Manila. She was the tallest candidate in that year's competition at 6'1". She was also the favourite to win the crown but she ended up second runner up to Miss India Sushmita Sen and Miss Colombia Carolina Gomez Correa. Sen was the winner and Gomez Correa was the first runner up.

After that pageant in Manila, there were no more news about her. Recently, I saw a picture of her as a presenter of a show in the US.

Today, Minorka Mercado is active in hosting events and functions all over the world. Photo on the left is of her hosting last year's Hispanic Choice Awards. She is now based in Philadelphia and is married to Peangelo Miranda and has a daughter with him. She also hosted the Latinas United for the Cure luncheon at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.

Mariangel Ruiz - Rebel Beauty

Mariangel Ruiz and Miss Universe 2003

One of the more publicized Miss Venezuelas in the recent years has been Mariangel Ruiz , who has been compared to Alicia Machado (Miss Universe 1996). Like Alicia, she came from the city of Maracay, won her national title against every prediction (in a contest where the results are almost never a surprise) and was considered a "rebel" Miss Venezuela. Also, like Alicia, she turned in a spectacular performance at Miss Universe, in comparison to more "conventional" titleholders, and overcame a number of major odds both within and outside her control.

Mariangel Ruiz actually tried twice for the Miss Venezuela title, the first time in 1998 when she did not even place into the top 120 candidates. In 2002, she won the preliminary casting in Maracay, becoming Miss Aragua 2002. Although the 2002 class was perhaps the weakest of the last five years, she was not a favorite and considered finalist material at best. Big favorites were Aida Yespica (Amazonas) and Maria Fernanda Leon (Portuguesa), the only candidates to ever compete twice in Miss Venezuela history (not including Miss Republica Bolivariana Venezuela 2000), as well as Vanessa Fanesi (Yaracuy), Amara Barroeta (Distrito. Capital), Solsiret Herrera (Monagas), and Driva Cedeño (Nueva Esparta). However, when Goizeder Azua of Carabobo was elected Miss World Venezuela and swept the Gala de Belleza preliminary show, a gigantic surprise, it was thought that for this year and for once, all bets would be off.
During the final Miss Venezuela 2002 competition, Gilberto Correa accidentally called out the wrong state (Apure) when Mariangel came onstage for the evening gown segment. Against all prognostications, Mariangel won the pageant, which for the first time was judged entirely by former Miss Venezuelas; her victory was completely unexpected by the contestants, who had thought the crown would go to Melissa Wolf of Miranda or Vanessa Fanesi of Yaracuy, and also by the press and the organization. However, Osmel considered her "rebellious" and threatened to send Amara Barroeta, her first runner-up, to Miss Universe if she did not stop her weight gain and focus on her training. Soon after, a hugely publicized "crisis" emerged in which it was claimed that the Organizacion Miss Venezuela did not have enough hard currency, due to President Chavez's government foreign exchange controls, to pay the franchise fee and send its delegate. At the same time, Osmel Sousa agreed to train Amelia Vega, Miss Dominican Republic, for a week in Caracas while Mariangel was placed on "standby".

When Miss Universe 2003 began, news changed nightly as to whether Venezuela would participate. After weeks of back-and-forth wrangling, including an intervention by the President of Panama, the Cisneros Organization was able to fund Mariangel's travel and she arrived late at Miss Universe 2003, nearly missing the deadline to register. Her semifinal performance was met with mixed reviews, with some critics believing that she might be the first Miss Venezuela in two decades to miss the semifinals (which would eventually happen the following year) and others predicting that her controversies would bring her the crown.

On the final night of Miss Universe 2003, Mariangel broke two conventions: first, she wore her hair down and little makeup, against Osmel's suggestions, and second, she wore a spectacular skin-tight Angel Sanchez crimson gown, becoming the first Miss Venezuela in a decade to not compete in a white, metallic, or light-toned dress. It was a winning combination, and she came off as one of the freshest contestants in history from Venezuela. However, once again the announcers called out the wrong title when she appeared onstage: the order of the contestants was messed up backstage for the swimsuit contest and Mariangel appeared when Cindy Nell of South Africa should have come onstage. Daisy Fuentes then called South Africa twice, to which Mariangel made an infamous (and hilarious) expression of confusion, but her training as Miss Venezuela kicked in and she took the stage with a spectacular performance. The scoring was not affected and Daisy corrected herself as Mariangel left the stage. During the interviews, another kicker arrived when Billy Bush asked Mariangel about her supposed favorite pastime, rappelling and extreme sports. The producers must have gotten confused, as Mariangel does not practice either, and she told Billy so with the comment "I love my life and protect it 100%" rather than lie in front of an international audience of 160 million people. Despite an excellent performance, Amelia Vega was unbeatable and Mariangel came in first runner-up to Dominican Republic, still the best outcome in the last three years for Venezuela. Although Amelia only received a few days of preparation in Venezuela, the executives of Venevision were furious that the winner of the Miss Universe contest had been groomed by their company while their own representative was on "standby" and moreover came in second to her, and banned the Miss Venezuela Organization from training other nations' contestants.

Alicia Machado - Beauty in a Pageant

There are lot of beauties worth our time to talk to. With this, I have decided to select one pageant winner or a runner up to be called our BEAUTY IN A PAGEANT.

We will try to feature their biography or any interesting facts about them. We are doing this to honor these ladies who went against all odds just to show to the world they are just ladies who have determined to prove there is BEAUTY IN A PAGEANT.

Our First BEAUTY IN A PAGEANT is 1996 Miss Universe, Alicia Machado of Venezuela.

Alicia Machado was born Yoseph Alicia Machado Fajardo in Maracay, Aragua State, Venezuela on December 6, 1976 to a Cuban father and a Spanish mother. She started out studying classical ballet and contemporary dance, then went on to Administrative Sciences. After winning the Miss Venezuela 1995 pageant while representing Yaracuy State, she advanced to the 1996 Miss Universe pageant, that was held in Las Vegas that year, and won the competition, the fourth Venezuelan to win the top honor. After her victory, she was asked what she would do, and replied "Eat!" Gaining weight after her win, Alicia was disappointed when Kellogg's withdrew a planned production of their Special K cereal which was to feature her photograph. The owner of the Miss Universe pageant, Donald Trump, called her an eating machine, saying that winners had an obligation to stay in a perfect physical state. Warned that she would lose her title, she was assisted by an aerobics instructor to lose the required weight, and was ultimately successful.

Alicia went on to a minor television acting career (the telenovela "Samata") from which she won a best actress award. She later attempted a musical career, appearing at the 2004 Miss Venezuela pageant as an honored guest performer. Controversy continued to surround her, including an alleged rivalry between her and another former Miss Universe and then the breakup of her engagement to a major-league baseball star in 2005 after she appeared on a Spanish television version of "Big Brother" with another man. She continued to work as a television commercial model, with some success promoting a dietary product. In February 2006, Alicia became the first Miss Universe to appear on the cover of the Mexican edition of Playboy. That same month, she debuted on the Mexican reality show "Singing For A Dream."

THE CONTROVERSY ON HER WEIGHT

"EAT, EAT, EAT!!!" Remember those words? Donald Trump snickered and said, "Some might even call her an eating machine!" Alicia Machado weighed 118 pounds when she won the crown but according to some sources she ballooned up to 150 pounds only a few months after her crowning. Alicia believed that the reports started because someone saw her with a swollen face after having her wisdom teeth removed and started that rumor. But it was no rumor, Alicia really had gained 30 pounds and succumbed to the media frenzy that would follow during her reign. The rumored threats to take away her crown began shortly before the Miss Teen USA pageant in August 1996. During her brief appearance in that pageant, you could see that Alicia had gained a little weight but it did not seem like a huge difference. It wasn't up until the Miss USA pageant in February 1997 that the weight loss program that Alicia was under was made public. Under the watchful eye of Donald Trump, Alicia sporting an "Exude" shirt and tight black sweatpants exercised with hired trainer Edward Jackowski in front of a mass of photographers and reporters. Alicia tried to smile and show that she was comfortable but later admitted that she wasn't. Who wouldn't when reporters are scoffing at you, photographers taking humiliating pictures, and rude comments from some people like, "Alicia, you can pull your leg back further than that, can't you?!" Alicia just looked up but continued to do her exercises with a smile. The unmistakable confidence of Alicia was crumbling before our eyes but Alicia was determined.

"147 is my weight, please, it's not 165!" squeals Alicia. "I'm no cow, okay?!" Alicia vowed to get back down to supermodel slimness and said that she was doing it for herself and not for anyone else. But, eating healthy food and doing regular exercises would be the routine this time around. Prior to Miss Universe, she only knew the world of diet pills, powders, and liposuction, which was how she got that figure during the pageant. Alicia read trainer Edward Jackowski's book, "Hold It, You're Exercising Wrong" and was on her way back to the top. You could hear the music from "Rocky" playing as she skipped rope, ran, and stretched. Prior to the Miss USA pageant, Alicia weighed in at 143 pounds. She then said that she lost 12 pounds that week. This would have meant that she was actually 155 pounds the week before, not 147. Alas, Alicia had seen it all and experienced all the hassles and criticism of a regular celebrity. The Miss USA pageant began as the outgoing Miss USA, Ali Landry, said that Alicia should be commended because she was not anorexic or bulimic like so many young girls. "Who cares that she gained a little weight?" said Ali. Well, the answer to that is everyone as was proven for the final question of the Miss USA 1997 pageant. George Hamilton asked the top three ladies, Tennessee's Towanna Stone, Hawaii's Brook Lee (who became Alicia's successor), and Idaho's Brandi Sherwood, Miss Universe is the subject of a lot of press attention because of her weight if this happened to you, how would you handle it?" Tennessee said, "I think it's very important to be your best self no matter if you're Miss Universe or whatever arena that you're working in. If I were faced with the position like that, I would try to be my best self. There isn't a weight restriction, as far as I am aware of and I would try to…probably lose the weight. I would. I would try to be healthy and handle it in a very healthy way." The soon-to-be Miss Universe, Brook Lee, gave an excellent concise answer, "I think I would take a good hard look at myself and I'd look from the inside out and I'd know that I was the same girl that was crowned that day and it really didn't matter what I looked like on the outside because I won for what I was in here. So if I go up, I go down, I get taller, I get shorter, my nose gets bigger or smaller, I'm still who I was when that crown was on my head and I'm a good representative no matter what." Idaho said, "Well, I think it's difficult for women to handle weight fluctuations and we all have to deal with that at certain times in our time. But I feel Miss Universe won for a certain reason. I saw the young woman compete who won and she was amazing. She had an inner beauty that came through. You can look at someone to a point but there's something that comes from inside and that's the woman who won the title. And so I feel the children that meet with this woman, that's the person they love. It's not what she looks like. It's the inner beauty." Alicia waved to the audience looking noticeably bigger than in Miss USA or even in the interviews prior to the pageant. That make-up made her face look huge. Could this have been done on purpose? Anyhow, Alicia rushed up to Brook who was proclaimed the new Miss USA with the sash and gave her a big hug. What did Brook have to say about this controversy? "I could see Alicia sitting in the audience and I felt for her and I was a little shocked by the question so I just spoke what I felt and I'm glad everybody agreed with it."

Alicia was officially an icon now. A positive role model who was criticized immensely over such a small issue. The founder of the Ms. Plus USA organization did not see what the fuss was. "Alicia is a beautiful woman no matter what size she is. Even if she weighed 200 pounds, I'd still believe that she's beautiful. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes." Alicia was the victim here but she won praise simultaneously. Her final appearance on Regis & Kathie Lee was quite memorable and still showed that same Alicia spunk that we loved so much during the Miss Universe pageant. Regis humorously blamed himself for the gain because he asked her to participate in a pasta cook-off and shortly after her crowning was asked to sample some cuisine. Alicia came out, waved to the audience, and seductively placed her hands on Regis' thighs and in a deep sexy voice said, "You no like my weight?" Kathie Lee responded in saying, "Should I leave you two kids alone?!" Alicia then said she was the new image for Diet Snapple and flashed the Diet Snapple logo which was on the "ahem" back to the audience. Kathie Lee then exclaimed, "Nice Snapple you got there!" Alicia talked about her new exercise regime, her love of American men, and what she was doing as Miss Universe. Alicia expressed her discontent in saying that sometimes people can be so cruel. Being Miss Universe was not easy work. She had to be around "sick childrens, and very bad situations, very cry situations" but overall the criticism was what weighed her down but she was determined to come back up. As Kathie Lee said, "Most of this criticism just comes from people who are just jealous."

Alicia and Brook also made appearances on the Fran Drescher hit show on CBS, "The Nanny" where Mr. Sheffield was asked to be a judge for Miss Universe and Alicia greeted Fran who was in the back. "Hi, hello, I am Alicia Machado." said Alicia. "Oh, from Who's the Boss?!" replied Fran. "No, that is Alyssa Milano but I get that all the time. I'm Miss Universe (holding out sash), look at that!" "Oh, Miss Universe!!" Fran bursts into tears. "Que pasa, chicken, why are you crying?" Alicia says as she comforts Fran. "I just saw a contestant that reminded me of my mother!" "Who?!" "Miss Hungary (hungry)!!!" Can you believe that Fran plugged Ildiko Kecan?!! The next Miss Universe only had one line. Mr. Sheffield asked Brook what interests her. She replies, "You mean other than handsome judges?!" Alicia's controversy thrust Brook into the spotlight as Miami Beach saw Alicia's triumphant return.

THE CONTROVERSY DURING HER CROWNING OF HER SUCCESSOR:

This time around, Alicia was not the controversy. Rather it was the divorce of Miss Universe owner Donald Trump and co-host of the pageant Marla Maples Trump. For Miss Universe 1997, Alicia danced during the opening number with her hands in the air. She only danced closely with Enrique Iglesias as he performed "Only You". Alicia had to endorse that Jantzen swimwear one last time. She did look noticeably bigger but no one wanted to see Alicia at 118 pounds ever again because she had done so by unnatural means and in a very unhealthy manner. When Marla asked Alicia about her year, she responded in saying, "Ah, Marla, to be Miss Universe was a great experience and I learned about different cultures around the world and I learned to be stronger in my personal life and in my future." Her reign came to an end. As Alicia took her farewell walk in a brown gown, her farewell speech went, "I thank God and my family for giving me the peace and spiritual support in this past year and I thank everyone around me for your support and belief in me. Being Miss Universe has brought me wonderful experiences, and has given me wisdom and above all strength. I also thank my country Venezuela, and my beloved city of Maracay for giving me the opportunity to represent them around the world with pride and honor. I want you to know that my concern will always be the deserving children of the world. They are the hope for the future." Alicia stepped back as Trinidad & Tobago's Margot Bourgeois was announced 2nd Runner Up, and Venezuela's Marena Bencomo was 1st Runner Up, USA's Brook Lee was the new Miss Universe. At the last moment, Alicia hugged Marena and gave her a kiss. Brook was sashed and Alicia not looking too happy at all, plopped the crown on Brook's head and tilted it slightly so it would fall. Remember what happened with Alicia's crown? But Brook caught the crown and her hairdo held it in place nicely. No crooked crown for Brook!! Alicia then rushed back to Marena's side rubbing her arm and comforting her as Brook took her walk for the audience greeting her with a standing ovation. Alicia faded away but she would resurface.

ALICIA'S JOURNEY ON THE STAGE TO BECOME MISS UNIVERSE:

The evening was electric in Las Vegas, Nevada, that night in May 1996. 79 beauties, vying for the Miss Universe title, from all over the world emerged onto the stage behind the reigning Miss Universe, Chelsi Smith. Only one of these beauties was a clear cut above the rest and that beauty was Alicia Machado. During the parade of nations, Miss Venezuela was announced and Alicia said, "Hola, my name is Alicia Machado. I come from the gateway of South America, VENEZUELA!!!" Her preliminary scores were very impressive. She came in second in every competition and second in the preliminaries. Only Russia's Ilmira Shamsutdinova beat Alicia in swimsuit, USA's Ali Landry beat her in evening gown, and India's Sandhya Chib beat her in the interview. She had a 9.43 for both interview and evening gown and the judges dialed "9.11" for her in the swimsuit competition!

Alicia was the last of the top ten to be announced but for this pageant they definitely saved the best for last! Alicia covered her face, blew a kiss to the air in front of her, took her spot, and blew another kiss to the crowd after the host, Bob Goen, announced her name. From there, it was downhill for Miss Alicia. She swept every competition comfortably from then on making her the clear winner. She was the only delegate who got higher than 9.8 throughout the evening. Her interview competition was quite memorable. As Alicia came forward, Bob Goen said that she was a 19-year-old law student and the daughter of a toy store owner. When asked about her father's toy stores, Alicia, using her translator replied saying, "Yes, as a matter of fact, my father owns two toy stores in Maracay, where I come from, and he has had them for the past 20 years and I shared many of those toys." Bob Goen responded in saying, "So everyday is like Christmas at your house, right?" Using her translator again she said, "Yes, everyday is like Christmas at my house because my father loves children very much and we have had the opportunity to share the good times with children and that is something that everybody should do." That is indeed something that everyone should do and I was glad that Alicia immediately expanded on her answer without Bob having to follow up his closed ended question. To conclude, Bob asked her if she spoke any English at all. She said, "Yes..A little, okay?! Okay…Welcome to Entertainment Tonight…" The audience immediately responded with laughter. "with your host Bob Goen and me!" Bob Goen then said, "Oh and you! She can plug my show anytime. (To interpreter) Tell her that later." Alicia marched over to her spot with a boost of confidence. Her score was 9.80 and the scores just kept getting higher.

That old black magic had us in a spell as the fabulous 50s came back for the best swimsuit competition ever starring the sensational Alicia Machado. All the delegates followed the same routine but Alicia gave it a little more. Alicia was called out. She came out of the little tent at the top of the stairs, took off her sunglasses, and worked the cameras, as her black and white image appeared behind her on a large screen and did a freeze frame right when she stuck her arms out and head way back. Her signature appeared on the screen and Alicia walked confidently down the stairs. At the end of the stairs, the photographers called out "hey!" and Alicia turned at them and turned back to the audience raising her sunglasses to the jazzy trumpet blare in the music. She strutted towards the middle of the stage with her hourglass in her tight black Jantzen swimsuit looking sensational. The audience screams rose suddenly and Alicia decided that she would spice up this competition even more by a little bit of her magic.

She stuck one hand on her hip and the other up in the air while moving her shoulders up and down twice. She then whipped her head back and marched to her scoring spot where she received a whopping 9.82. Alicia did yet another whip of the head, maybe a little too hard this time since her earring fell off but she just picked it up and led the other girls back on stage to conclude. Indeed, that old black magic had everyone in a spell even Alicia who simultaneously cast a spell on everyone! After reading a book on body-language, this was pretty obvious, but it said that whipping her your head or hair as Alicia did the entire night is a sign of confidence. It's saying, "I feel good about myself." Alicia had every right in the world to do so that night because it truly was her night.

After it was announced that Alicia had won the in-style award, it was time for the evening gown competition. Ali Landry's evening gown scored big points in the preliminaries but Alicia would take this competition too with the highest score of the evening, a 9.87. Alicia walked down the stairs elegantly in her sky blue off-shoulder gown with a silver breastplate structure. Alicia looked classy and elegant and Ali Landry would come in second to Alicia for the announcement of the top 6. The top 6 delegates were: Aruba, Russia, USA, Finland, Venezuela, and Mexico. This round was the judge's questions and again Alicia proved herself to be a cut above the rest. After four ladies had passed with fair answers, Alicia wowed the crowd with her sharpness. She picked judge number 1, Maud Adams, who asked her, "If you could choose only one, would you choose smart, rich, or beautiful and why?" Alicia responded in saying, "I would choose to be smart because being smart you can also be rich and beautiful and besides that, when you are smart, you can develop yourself internally and that can help you do many other things." Bob Goen showed he liked the answer as did the audience and the judges since she received a 9.85, the highest score yet again. Alicia accidentally turned away too soon and started walking back to her spot but Bob Goen called her back for a brief period and then she went back. It didn't matter though because this was still Alicia's night.

The final three delegates were Finland, Venezuela, and Aruba. The crowd roared upon the announcement of Miss Venezuela and Alicia clearly must have known that she was already the winner which boosted her confidence for the final question. The ladies were asked what men could learn from women. Miss Finland, Lola Odusoga, said, "Well, I think women are very bright person, well, I think smart, because, uh, they have, they are the ones that give birth. They are the ones that have to share love with Man. They have to learn, Man, how to love. Thank you." It was a good answer but Lola's broken English didn't really help the situation. Alicia proceeded in giving a simple answer which the translator turned into an awesome answer. She said, "I believe men can learn very much because thanks to us women, the men are here in this beautiful theatre, seeing this beautiful contest and applauding me because I am a beautiful woman!" The audience roared with delight and Alicia whipped her hair yet again as she went to stand with Lola, then Miss Aruba, Taryn Mansell responded in saying, "I believe men can learn sensitivity from women, men can learn warmth from women. I believe that men can learn a great deal from everything we have to offer." It was a decent answer but Alicia was clearly the winner. It couldn't be any more obvious. After Chelsi's farewell, Finland was announced the second runner up, then there were kisses all around between the three ladies and Bob Goen brought the top 2 closer. The audience was screaming for Venezuela. Bob Goen told the girls to take a deep breath. Alicia did and Taryn just smiled a little because I think she knew that Alicia won. Bob Goen proclaimed, "The first runner up is Miss Aruba! Miss Venezuela, you are the new Miss Universe!!" The big screen behind showed Alicia, shaking her hand a little, covering her face. She then pushed her hair off her shoulders and turned as Keylee Sue Sanders, Miss Teen USA 1995 gave Alicia her roses and put on her sash and Chelsi gave Alicia a kiss and crowned her. It was kind of a weak reaction because Alicia knew that she won. She then immediately turned to go to her throne holding her crown but Bob Goen pulled her back and made her say hello to her world! Unfortunately, Alicia still holding her crown with one hand and roses in the other tilted the crown slightly and she had to say hello with a crooked crown placement. Alicia was sort of restricted from waving because of that so she just held on and approached her throne. The delegates did not seem to react too well to this win. Some delegates clapped for her and others just watched. Just as the pageant ended and Alicia climbed the stairs to her throne, Miss Hungary, Andrea Deak, 15th place, standing right next to the throne, shook her head at Alicia in sad disbelief. On that sour note, this Miss Universe would not fade from the public eye like many others. Alicia stood out from the rest but not in the good way that she enjoyed during that night. Everything went downhill from there as Alicia's adventure would begin.

1999 Miss Universe in Trinidad and Tobago

1999 was one of my my favorite years for Miss Universe for the last 10 years. The pageant in Trinidad and Tobago was so fantastic and colourful. There is no doubt it was one of the best Miss Universe production in the history.

Aside from that some of my favourites were in this batch. Miriam Quiambao of the Philippines is defintely elegant, poised and so confident. She glowed onstage and she practically wowed the international crowd.

Gul Panag of India was a favourite when it comes to the brain department and Brenda Liz Lopez of Puerto Rico was photogenic. Mpule Kweglagobe of Botswana is definitely so charming and Carolina Indriago was so exotic. Spain's Diana Noguiera was so hot and sexy.

They were my favourites along with Miss South Africa, Sonia Raciti

In my love for this year of the pageant, I came across with a site that has a very good review of the pageant. It was written by a pageant expert. The article is published at Tom Page of Miss Universe Mania - http://www.tpmum.com/uni99th.html. I am copying the whole text here. The article was copied as it is except that I opted not to include the author's (Tom) comparison of his prediction to the actual winners. He got 3 out of 10. Not bad in a batch full of competitive women.

Here is the article (If you happen to red this, Tom, please contact me immediately and I will do the needful)

History was definitely made this year! The first black African to win the crown. The first set of "black-to-black" winners. USA didn't make the semifinals, nor did the home town girl, Miss TNT. The most contestants (84) that the Miss Universe pageant has ever had! What a year!

That opening number was sensational and Wendy also looked sensational in her national costume to introduce the show! At the beginning, Wendy removed a rather spooky mask to reveal her gorgeous face as she said, "Welcome to Trinidad & Tobago and the biggest party in the Universe. Tonight, one of 84 will walk away with MY CROWN!" I loved how she suddenly said, "my crown" loudly and the entire world was swept up in a frenzy of color and magic as the stage lit up with dazzling creatures and even more dazzling were the 84 contestants who I was glad to see wearing their native costumes again!! They fit right in the spectacular opening number. My only complaint was that I really wanted to see the preliminary scores this year more than ever since many girls that I was expecting to make the top ten didn't!

As you can see, I got 3 out of 10 semifinalists which is an all time low for me and Mexico, Botswana, and Philippines were in my suspicions list. South Africa, was an early press favorite. When the delegates first arrived, Sonia was in practically every picture. Spain was talked about by a few people but, boy, did she wow us! Jamaica and Ghana were both the total surprises (especially Ghana) but clearly the ladies excelled in their interviews to get into the top ten. I just could not believe that Miss Trinidad & Tobago didn't make the top ten because I watched her competing in the preliminaries and she had the MOST confidence on that stage in swimsuit and evening gown competitions. I have no idea what happened. As for Miss USA, she will join Barbara Peterson, Miss USA 1976 as the only two Miss USAs who didn't make the semifinals to Miss Universe. What was good about Miss USA and TNT not making it was that the judges could actually make this a FAIR competition considering that a significant portion of the judges for Miss Universe are always American and the inevitable cheers for Miss TNT.

I was pleased with this top ten because it shows that Miss Universe is FINALLY becoming less predictable and other countries are starting to get their deserved recognition.

Coincidentally, the 3 ladies I guessed correctly were my top 3. The odd thing about Spain and Philippines was they were not the actual winners of their pageants. Diana Nogueira didn't even make top 3 for Miss Spain but the winner, Lorena Pascual dropped the title for personal reasons and the rest refused the crown. The original Miss Philippines, Janelle Bautista, was dethroned since she was American and therefore was not eligible to be Miss Philippines. Janelle was dethroned and Miriam took the crown. As everybody knows now, Miss Philippines fell during the preliminary evening gown competition but when she got back up, the audience gave her a huge round of applause. I didn't think the judges were going to play that fall even though the audience liked it but Miriam sure did use it to her advantage. Way to go Miriam! It was also interesting that Puerto Rico's Brenda Lopez who was first runner up to Ana Rosa Brito in 1997 finished in 8th place at Miss Universe just like Ana Rosa Brito!! Talk about a match!

The announcement of the top ten is always an exciting moment and I loved the reactions that the girls had. Did you notice how Philippines strutted out on that stage and Miss Ghana's genuinely shocked expression. Miss Botswana went nuts and of course, I did expect a loud cheer for Miss India since Trinidad has a huge Indian community. Miss India was also called the usual host country spot which is usually the 9th spot. The guys in the audience holding the Jamaica flag also went nuts when Jamaica was called in.

As for the hosts, they were excellent. Jack Wagner interviewed everyone well and was just a terrific host. I love the special commentators and Ali Landry and Julie Moran were good examples of why. I loved some of their hilarious comments like: Julie: "They are hot to trot!", Ali: "What's that, Julie?". Jack: "Which gown would you like to wear?" Ali: "Julio! Just kidding!". or how about when Julie said great brunettes think alike! They were fun but when they said USA hadn't made it in 15 years, they were wrong. It was 23 years but the public got the idea. It was a long time.

As for the judges, there was hardly any diversity and yes, they were mostly American but they judged somewhat fairly but some scores were questionable. Ali said the judges are right on the money. Although, I have reviewed some of their scores. Maccioni gave Philippines a 2.00 for her interview score and I know that was supposed to be an 8 but he let his mind slip and looked at the keypad the wrong way. Poor Marcus Schenkenberg obviously had a broken score panel because he didn't score the first 5 delegates for interviews but they fixed it before the next 5.

On to the world tour. This was a great idea and I'm glad they continued this competition this year. Miss Spain only showed us how they do ribbon dancing in Taiwan but how could the judges score that? They definitely should have asked her more questions but it didn't matter because her body pulled her into the top 3. Miss Mexico was quite the classic. She was partnered with Miss India but Silvia struggled. First she mixes up the foods. She was supposed to compare roti to a tortilla and curry to the sauce but she accidentally said tortilla was the curry and roti was the sauce (the other way around) WHOOPS!! Just to clarify, when Silvia did her little schpiel in Hindi what she said was, "How are you? My name is Silvia. I'm fine." And the Indians in the crowd cheered but Silvia seemed to have this repelling attitude so it wasn't a surprise that she placed last in this portion. Miss Jamaica was fun. Her little scenario of how she would ask an Italian guy out was cute and she handled her interview very well. Miss Puerto Rico was great. First she comes out and says in a really sexy voice, "Hello, good evening" and she said she would take a coat, ski, and a big bag to fill with chocolate if she went to Switzerland. The big bag was funny. She also proved that she's her own woman with standards and even if it was okay to kiss on the first date in Switzerland, she will never do such a thing and will only consider it for the next date given that she receives a big bag of chocolate. I liked this interview. Miss Philippines was next and I would have like to hear her sing as Jack seemed to be implying but Guatemalan music is instrumental. I appreciated how she expanded on her answer to teach us that the Marimba is an instrument and a dance. She was just so sweet and she held this interview together very nicely.

Miss Ghana was next and she seemed to be getting Aruba's Irina Croes in a bit of trouble! Arubans are very open minded and Irina's is a real go-getter and Irina prefers the two piece swimsuits while discrete Ghanians tend to go for the one piece. Strangely enough, Akuba wore a two piece swimsuit! That Irina's been a bad influence, I'm telling you! Miss Botswana (our eventual winner) was so cute and genuine. She talked about Brazil's "last Eden" being the Amazon and told us that everyone in Botswana has a cattle post and they hang out with the cattle for fun. I would hardly consider cattle fun, I'll take my dogs, thank you très. South Africa delivered her answers well but Sonia didn't sound very natural but she did well. I think anybody who has watched Miss Universe for several years now has picked quite a bit of Spanish, including me, so everyone knows Hola and Gracias. The language barrier was clearly a problem so Jack went a little easier on Sonia. Ah, Miss India, brilliance at its best. She was very in control, poised, and was very mature. Notice how quick she was when she said she would get in trouble driving on the right hand side of the road in India. Her debate about where the social revolution of women occurred first was interesting and she considered defeat but it didn't come to blows. But Evander Holyfield was there but Gul can fight her own battles! Finally, Miss Venezuela, who was my prediction to win so I have to say that I absolutely adored her. You probably know that one of my favorite Miss Venezuelas ever was the perfect Minorka Mercado of 1994 and Carolina was almost like a Minorka-clone with darker skin and slightly younger. Her answers were spontaneous and still excellent. She ain't gonna change her clothes for no one and she focuses on positives rather than negatives in discussing Ireland.

I just want to mention the music for this pageant because it was excellent. The video for "Stand Up and be Counted" was excellent. I also enjoyed the "Island Beat" segments and talking about Trinidad & Tobago.

The swimsuit segment with a little bit of "Limbo Fire" was again very energetic and exciting. The delegates themselves really didn't do much though. Spain had sensational form and she broke the hex that the delegate who was called first recently had for some time. Mexico's stance could have used some work but she did look shapely. Jamaica needed more bust but she was fit. She was cute when she turned away from the audience and suddenly turned back. Puerto Rico looked fantastic and I must admit I was surprised at her low score as I was with Ana Rosa Brito! I did noticed Brenda's ribs poking out on occasion but she looked good. Miss Philippines had excellent form. I think the judges knew about Miriam's notorious fall so this may have helped her to get high scores. Did you notice how she placed her hands to make her shoulders look broader? Out comes Miss Ghana and I could think of at least 30 delegates who had better bodies than her because her form was not very appealing and her legs were not exactly ideal. I wasn't surprised at this score but I was surprised that she beat Miss India by a hundredth. Botswana had a figure similar to Wendy Fitzwilliam. She looked great as any Miss Universe should. South Africa also had an excellent form. Sonia definitely has the look of an American celebrity. To me, she looks like Mariah Carey with darker hair but some other people say she looks like Jennifer Love Hewitt. She definitely has a look though. Here comes Miss India complete with her ENORMOUS BREASTS! I couldn't believe I never noticed the size of her breasts before. They were huge! As Oprah Winfrey's best friend Gail said to Oprah, "I have a black eye...One of your boobs hit me in the face!" Gul could have used some toning. Carolina Indriago look so striking and I thought her score was way too low. Venezuela never ever hits 6th place!! What happened?! Julie also mentioned that there wasn't much focus on breasts this year but Miss India had enough breasts for everybody so that was fine. The final limbo was freaky but she did it and they must have put something in her hair to keep it from catching fire.

The evening gown competition was excellent. I think Miss Colombia really stood out here in her striking gown. You couldn't miss her. Julio's song "One More Chance" was an excellent choice. It wasn't too slow and it kept the competition moving. Spain had a rather plain gown but the low-low cut on the back certainly grabbed some attention! Mexico had a stunning white gown and her hair was done up nicely. Jamaica's navy blue gown wasn't really a great choice. Nicole could have gone with something better. Miss Puerto Rico's dress was designed by Tommy Hilfiger and although many people didn't seem to like it, I thought Brenda looked vivacious and she wore that gown very well. It was just like Chelsi Smith's gown only it had straps and sparkles. Miss Philippines stepped out in a glistening sky blue gown and you could feel this beautiful aura about her as she walked around the circle. Miriam wasn't going to fall this time. It was almost as if the fall had boosted her confidence but Miriam was glowing during the evening gown competition. Miss Ghana's gown didn't really look that great. That shawl thing looked okay, but just okay. You could the stitch marks on it though. Miss Botswana's gold gown was great and she looked very sophisticated and elegant when she held her hands in front like (was it Audrey Hepburn?) or some movie star is noted for doing that I forget who. Miss South Africa's gown was nice. It was an interesting design. Miss India had an excellent spot in the music. I liked how she smiled at the man who was escorting her and she looked radiant in this striking gown and the gloves were also a nice touch. Next was the sensational Carolina Indriago. This gown seemed to have brought some mixed reactions and others said it was Titanic-like but I thought this gown was fair. I'll admit I didn't like the strands or those things sticking out on the skirt but she looked elegant. The "all-covered up but still very sexy" look seems to be in.

The top 5, South Africa, Venezuela, Botswana, Spain, and Philippines were all good choices. Even though, Miss India was in 6th place, had she made the top 5, she probably could have taken it all which her outstanding personality. I was disappointed not to see her and Puerto Rico in there as were Julie and Ali. Julie mentioned Puerto Rico and Ali goes, "And my India!!! I loved her from the beginning. What happened?!" South Africa's little "thank you" at the end one of her answers did make her sound less natural and although she handled the questions well, she didn't come through. Miss Venezuela was excellent and could easily have made top 3. The race issue is always a hot topic but it didn't really seem to work for Carolina just like Denny Mendez. The race issue is getting a bit tiresome I suppose. Miss Botswana was so cute, Julie called her "adorable" and that's just the right word for her with her facial expressions and all. She was simultaneously very intelligent and her speech on making education compulsory was great. Spain's little butt wiggle when Jack turned her around was what got her in. Sure, she wants to find the cure for AIDS and cancer but that little motion in saying the front of the dress was more important since you must look at people face on got her in. Miss Philippines talked about her fall and she milked it for all it was worth. She just started laughing and provoked the audience to start laughing giving her a little more time to think and turn this fall into something political. She claims that she stood up for all the people who have ever fallen and she feels she was a good example since she got up. Now, I must admit that I thought this was a little corny. She got up and continued and that was that. I highly doubt that she was going to run off stage crying after coming this far. Nonetheless, here was Miriam a potential Miss Universe.

Notice how Julie and Ali both picked, Spain, Philippines, and VENEZUELA as their top 3 but Spain won that portion with Botswana in 2nd and Philippines in 3rd. Carolina probably could have taken the crown seeing how this was a no-win situation and I'll get to that in a second. Notice how Miss Philippines was called in the middle? This was a sign that they wanted her to win because all the recent winners have been called in the middle. The final question was a turning point. They were asked if Miss Universe should continue her reign if she was to get pregnant. I know this question was indirectly related to the disqualification of Miss Guam, Trisha Heflin, after it was discovered that she was pregnant. All three surprisingly said yes but Botswana gave the best delivery OF THE 3. Had Venezuela or India made the top 3, I think the situation would have been different. Miss Spain didn't really finish her answer. Miss Philippines seemed to lack a little confidence and composure. She said Miss Universe should continue if she has been a good example and set goals but a pregnant Miss Universe obviously hasn't been a good example and this pregnancy could not have been intentional had it occurred during her reign since it was not planned. This is why Julie and Ali said she choked. Miss Botswana answered well but she thinks that a baby would not affect her reign and that it is an expression of her femininity (or feminity, as Mpule would say) but since Mpule answered the best, she won. Notice also how she quieted down the audience in saying, "thank you" showed that she was very in control. Of the 3, Botswana had the most confidence. Mpule also gave quite a reaction to winning the crown! Wendy looked sensational in this gown as she did her farewell walk to her song "Kiss of Life". The hair looked somewhat plastic but she was still a true Miss Universe.

Mpule's appearance on Regis & Kathie Lee was great. Mpule came out with her hair in a pony tail wearing a long blue jacket and white skirt and her sash. Both Regis & Kathie butchered her name but Mpule said, "You tried." She also said that she was a former Miss Teen Kwelagobe and she likes New York and got to see the Statue of Liberty. Kathie Lee also made Mpule reveal where she is staying. It was a joke but Kathie goes, "Are you staying at trump's apartment on 5th Avenue" and Mpule says "180 Riverside" but then Regis & Kathie go, "Don't tell everyone!" But what do you expect from innocent Mpule? Kathie gets double smacks for that one! As Miss Universe, Mpule said her platform is creating AIDS awareness and education since AIDS has hit Botswana hard. On the humorous tip, Mpule, in her native tongue, Setswana, said, "I love you, Regis and you are so handsome." The audience gasped in amazement as they revealed the crown and they also showed when Mpule won it all. Just some interesting facts: "Mpule" means "one who comes with the rain" since she was born on a rainy day but no one could ever rain on Mpule's parade!

What a pageant! Is all I can say about 1999. A year of wonderful and shocking surprises but overall Trinidad gave a memorable show and graced us with Mpule. Now it's on to Miss Universe 2000 which will likely have the most contestants ever but that title is going to be really appealing! Some countries I would like to see win Miss Universe 2000 are Italy since they are the highest ranking country in the list of the most miss universes without a winner. India since it is the most populated country who participates in the pageant. Philippines since Filipinos are avid pageant fans. Venezuela since they have been stiffed several times over and Osmel is going to bring out the big guns next year as will every country most likely!

Thank you to the author, Tom, of this good review. You can check his site at www.tpmum.com and you will read his yearly reviews of Miss Universe.
