Miss World for South Africa again

Miss Botswana assistant director says they are delighted that the world beauty pageant will be staged in Durban, South Africa this year.

Ms Neo Selwe says even though the exact date has not been announced, they intend to take advantage of the host country's proximity to gain experience directly from the organisers.

Ms Selwe said although the pageant was held in the same country last year, they did not gain experience as the venue was announced late as the organisers relocated from Russia at the 11th hour due to political instability in the region. The assistant director said due to the poor preparations, they reached the venue late giving them limited time to interact with the international organising body.

Ms Selwe said this year they intend to benchmark from the mother body to further enhance the organisation and image of the local pageant.

She said they were still lacking some information on the development of the queens and the choreography of the final event among other things. The assistant director said they hope that after gaining some experience from the world spectacle they will able to put up an event that would surpass anything that happened in the past.

Miss Botswana has been marred by controversy with the local girls complaining that they were neglected. Last year's participation was no exception in terms of negative publicity for the event. In 2008, a task force was appointed to identify the problems and come up with strategies to revive the pageant. The task force has not yet started its work due to shortage of funds. It expects to receive the funds this coming financial year after which it would tour the countryside to solicit the views on this thorny subject.

Their recommendations will determine whether the administration of the pageant should remain with the current license holders, or an independent body should run it.

Miss Universe Visits Guantánamo Bay

Don’t ask us how or why we came across this — and the British home secretary’s husband did not bring it to our attention — but the latest entry on the blog of the reigning Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, has a sort of eye-catching dateline: “March 27, 2009, Guantánamo Bay.”

According to the Web site of the U.S.O., which arranged the visit, the Miss Universe Organization made the decision to “deploy Crystle Stewart, Miss U.S.A. 2008, and Dayana Mendoza, Miss Universe 2008, to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to visit troops as part of a U.S.O./Armed Forces Entertainment tour.”

Ms. Mendoza, who competed as Miss Venezuela, has a blog on the pageant’s Web site, and this account of the visit appeared there last Friday, after her deployment:

This week, Guantánamo!!! It was an incredible experience.

We arrived in Gitmo on Friday and stared going around the town, everybody knew Crystle and I were coming so the first thing we did was attend a big lunch and then we visited one of the bars they have in the base. We talked about Gitmo and what is was like living there. The next days we had a wonderful time, this truly was a memorable trip! We hung out with the guys from the East Coast and they showed us the boat inside and out, how they work and what they do, we took a ride around the land and it was a loooot of fun!

We also met the Military dogs, and they did a very nice demonstration of their skills. All the guys from the Army were amazing with us.

We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting.

We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.

The water in Guantánamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantánamo Bay :)

I didn’t want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful.

That glowing account of Ms. Mendoza’s visit to the U.S. Naval Station at Guantánamo Bay is unlikely to please Hugo Chavez, her country’s president. Mr. Chavez, who reportedly called Ms. Mendoza to congratulate her when she won the Miss Universe crown last year, recently called on the United States to “return Guantánamo and Guantánamo Bay to the Cubans” after closing the detention facility there.

Mr. Chavez, who is close to the Cuban leadership, may now be rethinking the praise he heaped on Ms. Mendoza on Venezuelan television last year, when she returned to Caracas with the crown.

Trivia: No Miss Congeniality has Gone to Win the Miss Universe Title

29 March 2009

The Miss Universe is a prestigious international event that has grown since its inception from 1952. The international beauty pageant with participants from over 80 nations is bound to have some interesting trivia.

In this space we have provided you with such information that is not very commonly known. The origin of the Miss Universe beauty pageant was shrouded with a controversial start. The local bathing beauty contest, spearheaded by Catalina Swimwear in Long Beach, CA metamorphosed into the international annual tradition of Miss Universe 2008. It was when Miss America 1951 Yoland Betbeze refused to wear swimwear for Catalina Swimwear that the brand’s manufacturer Pacific Mills pulled out of the event and started Miss Universe beauty pageant.

The controversies related to the event began from the inception of the beauty pageant. Armi Kuusela of Finland, who became the first Miss Universe in 1952, gave up her crown shortly before her one year reign as the Miss Universe ended. The beauty from Finland did so as she wished to get married to a Filipino tycoon, Virgilio Hilario.

Another Miss Universe who resigned prior to the full one year completion as her Miss Universe reign was Miss Universe 1974, Amparo Munoz. Ms Munoz resigned her title in the six month of her reign.

Though the event is bases on global harmony and equity, there have been incidents in the past when protests have occurred against some of the contestants of the event. In 1993, Miss USA Kenya Moore was booed by the local crowds, when the event was held in Mexico. Fourteen years later in 2007, when the event was again organized in Mexico, Miss USA Rachel Smith was booed by the local crowds owing to what they saw as US unfriendliness toward illegal immigrants.

In another interesting incident Miss Universe 1996, Alicia Machado of Venezuela was warned by the Miss Universe organization as she had exceeded the maximum weight required during her reign.

In the year 1999, Miss Guam Universe Trisha Elaine Heflin was barred from participating in the Miss Universe 1999 for being pregnant. The Miss Universe 1999, Mpule Kwelagobe however won the title that year as she gave a fitting reply to the controversial question, whether a Miss Universe who became pregnant be allowed to continue her reign. The young lady from Botswana to the question replied that a Miss Universe should be allowed to continue her reign as being pregnant was a sign of femininity, which Miss Universe stands for.

The Miss Universe 2007 was also a hotbed for interesting and unique information. Miss Sweden, Isabel Lestapier Winqvist, unexpectedly pulled out from the event owing to complaints in her country that the beauty pageant degrades women. Sweden has won the coveted crown three times in the past.

It will be an interesting fact to note that no Miss Congeniality has ever gone to win the Miss Universe title.

The newly constituted nation Kosovo has sent its delegate for Miss Universe 2008 for the first time in the beauty pageant in Vietnam.
NOTE: In the picture is Miss China who won Miss Congeniality at theMiss Universe 2007 pageant in Mexico.

Porn scandal may ban Miss Russia 2009 from Miss World contest - report

The scandal around Miss Russia 2009's recently discovered nude photographs may keep Sophia Rudyeva from taking part in the Miss World beauty contest. Still, her participation is not totally ruled out, since there is no explicit rule stating that contestants cannot take part in nude photo shootings.

Soon after Sophia, aged 18, was crowned Miss Russia, photographs showing her in the nude appeared all over the Internet. It turned out that a while ago, reportedly when the girl was only 15 years old, she posed for an adult magazine erotic photo session. This is shocking behavior for the girl that is to represent Russia at the international beauty contest, but so far she has not been officially banned from the pageant.

“It was always taken for granted that the contestants could never be part of anything of the sort,” former head of the Miss Russia research commission, Ilya Prokhortsev, who designed the contest's original rules, told Komsomolskaya Pravda daily Thursday.

“So we kind of never included this point into our written rules. This is a nonsensical situation.”

The problem seems to be that Sophia, who represented St. Petersburg at the Miss Russia contest, had not, like the rest of the contestants, taken part in the regional part of the pageant, but was taken in the last moment as a substitute for the original Miss St. Petersburg. By skipping the regional level of the contest, Sophia also skipped a good part of the background check.

“We usually check all the participants of the regional contest. We know all the local agencies with doubtful reputation, and we know where to look on the Internet. But at the all-Russia level it's impossible to track down every girl,” Prokhortsev explained.

Organizers of the beauty pageant have refused to comment on the porn scandal before speaking to Sophia, who is currently abroad doing a commercial photo shooting.

Prokhortsev said he did not believe Julia Morley, chief executive of Miss World pageant, could ever accept Sophia's participation in the contest after the scandal. At any rate, even if Sophia does not get banned, she is unlikely to receive any prizes.

“The girl's and the contest's prestige is going to be spoiled anyway,” he said. (mosnews.com)

Donald Trump offers Croatia to host Miss Universe 2009

The businessman Donald Trump proposed to Croatia's officials for their country to host Miss Universe beauty pageant, in return for the possibility of his investments in hotels and golf fields on the island of Brioni.

In the offer, Trump requested from Croatia to participate in funding of the event, whose total value is estimated at 1.5 billion dollars.

However, it was reported that Croatia rejected the offer, explaining that an investment of several million dollars amid the global economic crisis would not be a wise idea.

Nonetheless, the experts said that by organizing the Miss Universe, Croatia would profit by securing a promotion worth at least 200 million dollars, in addition to the fact that NBC network would be responsible for live coverage of the event. (makfax.com.mk)

Binbining Pilipinas Universe 1982 Maria Isabel Lopez sees red

27 March 2009

No, it’s not true that feisty Maria Isabel Lopez, 1982 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, was dragged out of the Araneta Coliseum during the coronation night of this year’s Bb. Pilipinas though an angry Isabel lashed out at the beauty contest organizers. Maria Isabel is one of the most vocal, articulate and controversial celebrity figures. She was almost disqualified from representing the Philippines in the Miss Universe because she was a former Gerard Peter model. She did not win the title but Maribel went on to become a most sought after actress in the ’80s.

Maria Isabel said she has always been invited to the pageant and for the first time this year, she did not receive an invitation. She was in a quandary why her presence was not welcome at the pageant this year. She could not think of any reason except perhaps the old issue that she once posed as a Gerard Peter model.

Another beauty queen is crying foul — Sandra Seifert. Sandra was disqualified a few days before the Bb. Pilipinas finals night. “Three days before the finals, I received a letter disqualifying me because I posed for FHM. I told them I used to be a model and I did not hide the fact that I had a pictorial with the magazine,” Sandra said.

Sandra enthused that she was looking for that clause in her contract that prohibits her from posing in a men’s magazine but she could not find it. “Malungkot ako at first. Pero sabi ko, lahat ng jobs ko wholesome. The most daring I have done was when I wore a swimsuit for my pictorial in a men’s magazine. On the contrary I am not really sad because posing in men’s mags doesn’t define who you are.”

Also on the same boat as Sandra and Maria Isabel is 2007 Bb. Pilipinas-World Maggie Wilson who was also not invited to the affair. And the suspected reason, she posed for a men’s mag. But Maggie doesn’t really mind. Her reign is long over and not being invited to the pageant is no big deal to her. (philstar.com)

Miss Philippines 1963 Monina Yllana: A refreshing blast from the past

Remember Monina Yllana, the lovely Bicolana (from Naga City) who was Miss Philippines in 1963 and who represented the country in the Miss International contest in Long Beach, California, in which she finished one of the 15 semi-finalists (the crown went to Miss Iceland)? She was the Philippines’ third delegate to the Miss International contest (after Editha Vital in 1960 and Cynthia Ugalde in 1962). Since then, four Filipinas have brought home the title: Gemma Cruz in 1964, Aurora Pijuan in 1970, Melanie Marquez in 1979 and Precious Lara Quigaman in 2005.

Editha became a movie star (appearing as Maria Clara in Gerry de Leon’s El Filibusterismo) and so did Cynthia (with Sampaguita Pictures, introduced in Birds of Paradise with Josephine Estrada, 1962 Miss Philippines-Universe, succeeded by Lalaine Bennett who placed fourth runner-up in the 1963 Miss Universe Pageant). Of the four Misses International, only Melanie and Lara continued in showbiz, while Aurora quit after doing two movies, Popeye Atbp. with Ariel Ureta and Sunugin ang Samar with Ramon Revilla.

“I was too shy to be in showbiz,” said Monina who is here on her first visit in 25 years during which she and her husband, Augusto Fernando (an architect from Lian, Batangas) stayed in Virginia, USA, with their four children and three grandchildren. They migrated to the US in 1984 during the US Olympics. “Besides, before I finished my reign, I got married. I met my husband during an event in Pampanga where I crowned the winner of a beauty contest.”

Actually, before she became a beauty queen, she appeared with Tony Fortich in a movie whose title she couldn’t recall.

“It was too tiring,” she said. “I didn’t like it. I was always going home late.”

More offers came after she won Miss Philippines at age 23 but, well, she’s shy, remember? “Napilitan lang ako sumali sa contest,” Monina blushed.

“In fact, she’s still very shy,” commented Jomari Yllana whose father, the late Andres Yllana, was Monina’s older brother. Jomari had to be present at the interview to give his Aunt Monina “moral support.” It was Jomari who sounded off Funfare about his aunt’s homecoming.

Beauty contestants then wore shorts and not, unlike today, bikinis. There were more than 30 who competed for the Miss Philippines crown and around 40 for the Miss International crown.

“I have fond memories of that contest in Long Beach,” said Monina. “We went to several places. I was excited because it was my first trip to the US.”

The Fernandos’ four children are: Bobby, 42, single; Luisa, 40, married (to Anthony Raneses, a reserved commander of the US Navy) with two children, based in Israel; Rhodora, 38, single, who works at the World Bank; and Maria Rita, 36, married (to Fil-Am Michael Minteer) with one child.

Life in Virginia is simple, she said. She finished a secretarial course at the Stella Maris College and she made use of her degree when she worked at a pediatric office. She and her husband have retired in the mid-’90s and now spend their time traveling. They live with their unmarried children in Virginia — “And I enjoy taking care of my grandchildren.” (philstar.com)

Miss India 2009 Finalists launched a national campaign

26 March 2009

JUST BEFORE the 2009 edition of Pantaloons Femina Miss India beauty pageant transcends into the final phase, the 20 gorgeous finalists launched a commendable and classic nationwide campaign to throw light on the myths surrounding cancer, called “Femina White Ribbon Initiative”.

The campaign is a combined CSR led initiative supported by three powerful bodies – Femina, Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) and Nargis Dutt Foundation (NGF). It will focus on the importance of early detection and prevention and curability of cancer if discovered well in advance. This initiative will comprise of a series of informatory articles on prevention, detection and management of cancer in the forthcoming issues of Femina magazine, several Mumbai-based events/ awareness campaigns to sensitise the Indian citizens about cancer, fundraising by NGF to support the treatment of underprivileged patients and research on cancer at Tata Memorial Hospital.

The day-long humane interaction saw the confluence of dignitaries such as Dr Mohan Das, Dean, Tata Memorial Centre, representatives from Nargis Dutt Foundation Namrata Kumar and Kumar Gaurav, Femina Editor Tanya Chaitanya and well known artist and former Miss India Anjana Kuthiala to announce their association with the campaign and extend their long term support by way of creating awareness on cancer and spreading the message of love and compassion towards all that are affected by it.

The emotive moment of the afternoon was a fashion show put together by the 20 Miss India 2009 contestants who walked the ramp hand in hand with the cancer-affected children. Post the fashion show, each child was crowned and sashed as a ‘Femina Little Princess’. The children in all the enthusiasm and excitement loved every moment of this show. For the Miss India contestants, this benevolent act was just the beginning of their social mission of lending a helping hand towards the needy and engaging themselves in crucial social issues affecting our society’s growth.

What followed the fashion show simply awed the audience – two dance performances; one by specially challenged, visually handicapped and cancer-stricken kids from Tata Memorial Hospital, who were specially trained by Shiamak Davar’s ‘Victory Art Foundation’ and the other by Shiamak Davar’s professional troupe. Renowned artist Anjana Kuthiala announced the online selling of her paintings, the proceeds of which would be donated to the Nargis Dutt Foundation. To bring a broadened smile to the faces of children further, Walt Disney India organised a movie screening for the 150 children which indeed made their day!

Tanya Chaitanya, Editor, Femina, highlighted, “The most beautiful verb in the world is 'to help'. And we at Femina magazine believe that every woman has the capacity to turn this verb into action. As a part of the Femina White Ribbon Initiative, the participants of the Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2009 pageant will spread cheer and smiles in the lives of little children afflicted by cancer. Join us in our quest for finding beauty within.”

This was a day will not only be remembered by the children and guests but also by the 20 Miss India contestants, who will file this moment in their beauty diaries.

Winning beauty contest not a cakewalk, says Miss Tourism International

She has been recently crowned Miss Tourism International and is looking forward to a career in Bollywood. But it has been a tough journey for Manasvi Mamgai who worked 16 hours a day to get where she has.”People believe that modelling is fun and does not require any hard work, but the fact is that I had to go through a tough and hectic regime. I used to be on my toes from 7 in the morning till 11 p.m.,” said Manasvi.

“When I used to come back to my room, my whole body used to ache because of grooming, fitness sessions. At the end of the day all I wanted was to crash on the bed,” she added.

The 21-year-old won the Miss Tourism International title in Malaysia Dec 31, 2008, after beating 42 contestants from all around the globe.

“Winning this pageant is such a wonderful feeling. It is a matter of great pride for me to promote my country on a global platform. But it is too early to talk how it will benefit my career,” she explained.

Manasvi says the decision to send her to the event was taken by Elite model management at the last moment.

“At the last moment I was told that I would be representing India, I was excited as well as nervous because this was a big responsibility. I am glad that I made everyone proud,” Manasvi said.

She had to undergo 15 days of rigorous fitness training. She also had to attend beauty sessions and diction classes and, according to her, these classes have helped her a lot in her modelling endeavours.

Like other models Manasvi too wants to be a part of Bollywood, but right now she wants to focus on modelling assignments.

“As a kid, I always wanted to be an actress and I will eventually, but right now I have set my priorities right and presently I want to focus on my modelling career,” she said.

Manasvi feels there is no short cut to success.

“I am an easy going person. If I am good, I will definitely catch the attention and if I am not, then no matter what I do, I will never get good assignments. I enjoy doing my work with sincerity and put in my best efforts and I am sure I will succeed,” she added.

Manasvi has walked the ramp for designers like Rohit Bal, Ravi Bajaj, Manish Malhotra and Manish Arora. She was also the face for the fairness cream Fair and Lovely last year.

Katherine takes on country's best

25 March 2009

Aldergrove's Katherine Slack made it to the top 20 in the Miss World Canada pageant, March 21 in Toronto.

A model/soprano from North York, 21-year-old Lena Yanbing Ma was crowned Miss World Canada 2009 at the beauty pageant at St. Lawrence Centre for The Arts - Jane Mallett Theatre in Toronto. Lena also won the talent portion of the competition and the best in evening gown award. The 1.80 m tall beauty will be the representative of her country at the Miss World 2009 pageant in December at Johannesburg, South Africa.

Katherine Slack, 20-years-old and 5'4", won the title Miss Fraser Valley B.C. World 2008-'09 last July 20, and attended the Miss World Canada 2009 pageant in Toronto during spring break. A total of 47 provincial winners proceeded to Toronto for this national pageant.

The Miss World pageant is the oldest surviving major international beauty pageant, created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951. Since 2000 his wife, Julia Morley, co-chairs the pageant. Alongside with its rival, Miss Universe and Miss Earth contests, this pageant is one of the most publicised beauty contests in the world. The telecast of the final competition is the world's largest live annual beauty pageant television event with viewers around the globe.

The winner spends a year travelling to represent the Miss World Organization and its various causes. Traditionally, Miss World lives in London during her reign. The current Miss World is Ksenia Sukhinova of Russia.

Katherine Slack also won Miss Teen Fraser Valley in 2005.

Youth program seeks Canada’s finest teens

The call is out to find Canada’s best overall teens for the second annual Top Teen of Canada competition. Teenagers from across the country will be chosen to represent their communities in a competition that will award $5,000 in cash scholarship prizes.

This August, the chosen delegates will travel to Vancouver for one week, where the focus will be entirely on them and what they can contribute to the nation should they be chosen as the Top Teen of Canada.

In 2008, a group of 26 teenagers from small towns across Canada converged in Vancouver to discuss issues that were important to them, from self-image and body issues to homelessness and poverty. Open to the public, this was the perfect platform for these amazing young men and women to have their voices heard. This year, the program will be filmed for a youth documentary.

As well, the Top Teen program raised over $20,000 for their chosen charity, Cops For Cancer for the Canadian Cancer Society. Each chosen delegate will again do a fundraiser towards this cause in his/her hometown prior to attending the final event.

During the week, they will receive professional training in various genres to enhance their life skills including public speaking, speech presentation, interview skills, and attend workshops such as self-defense, stress management, and health and fitness. A judging panel will determine the winner based on a speech presentation, interview, and a personal talent showcase. Last year’s contestants received nation-wide media coverage and were viewed as role models for other youth.

“Teenagers can make an incredible difference in their community and have great potential for leadership,” says creator Darren Storsley, a high school teacher and winner of the 2004 Canadian Male Model Search. “This program will allow youth to exceed and for the overall winner, a year of public appearances representing Canadian youth.”

The Top Teen of Canada Competition is open to all teenagers aged 13-18. (bclocalnews.com)

Ngoc Diem and Hoang Yen nominated for Miss Universe

Vietnam’s representative at Miss Universe 2009 pageant will be one of two nominees: The first runner-up of Miss Universe Vietnam 2008 Vo Hoang Yen or Miss Tourism 2008 Phan Thi Ngoc Diem.

After Elite Vietnam announced it would not renew the right to choose the Vietnamese candidate for this pageant, the Vietnam Universe Company assumed the right. The firm asked the PL Modeling Company to introduce some nominees for the pageant.

The Director of PL Modeling, Tran Thanh Long, said: “We recommended Vo Hoang Yen and Phan Thi Ngoc Diem. Hoang Yen has the nice body of a model. She was also the first runner-up of the Miss Universe Vietnam 2008. Ngoc Diem is Miss Tourism 2008, a university student with good knowledge.”

The Vice Director in charge of marketing of the Vietnam Universe Company, Le Diem Ly, said that firm will choose one candidate for the Performance Art Agency to consider and approve. It will send the file of this contestant to the organising board of Miss Universe 2009 in May.

Ly said the Miss Universe organising board requires that contestants be in the top three of national beauty contests. Vietnam has to select a beauty queen of last year because this year Vietnam will not organise any beauty contest for young girls.

Hoang Yen and Ngoc Diem were surprised by the selection.

“I’m very happy and proud to be trusted. With my experience at the Miss Tourism International 2008, if I’m chosen, I’ll try my best,” Ngoc Diem said.

“I’m really surprised and very happy. Of course, I will be ready for the contest,” said Hoang Yen.

Ngoc Diem, a last-year student at the HCM City Foreign Trade University, was crowned Miss Vietnam Tourism last August. She represented Vietnam at the Miss Tourism International 2008 in Malaysia in December 2008.

Hoang Yen was the first runner-up of the Miss Universe Vietnam and a supermodel.

Scandal!! Naked photos of newly crowned Miss Russia appear on the web

24 March 2009

A scandal exploded Monday morning on Russian media. Naked pictures of newly crowned Miss Russia, Sofia Rudieva of St. Petersburg, were found on the internet, in a specialized website called “Perfect10″ which features nude photographs of models.

Newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda published a complete gallery of these photos, where the russian queen is fully exposing her breasts. In other photos, she is completely nude.

It is still unknown if these photographs can jeopardize her beauty title, or her participation in international contests.

Other women with similar photographs competed in Miss Universe: Joyce Giraud (Puerto Rico 1998), Helen Lindes (Spain 2000) and Evelina Papantoniou (Greece 2001) all posed nude and controversies surrounded their participation. However, all three women made the top 3 positions in their respective contests.

The Miss Russia Organization will be releasing a statement soon.

If you are looking for the nude photos, this is the LINK.

Gloria Diaz Miss Universe Pictures

There are very few good pictures of Asia's third Miss Universe winner and Philippines' first during her reign. In fact those pictures of her in the internet showing her winning moments are not as beautiful as compared to her contemporaries'. Lucky enough, I've found out some pictures of her that can be considered precious. It's pretty obvious these were not taken in the Philippines but probably in one countries where she has visited.

Gloria Diaz won the Miss Universe 1969 in Miami, Florida. She won during the first time they introduced a question and answer portion in the finals.

My Bb. Pilipinas Experience by Regina Han (Bb. Pilipinas 2009 1st Runner Up)

My mother, Chiqui Brosas, was a former beauty queen (Bb. Pilipinas-Universe). A very gregarious and outgoing person, she placed fourth in the 1975 Miss Universe pageant in El Salvador. I grew up quite the opposite.

I was timid and shy. Following in my mother’s footsteps was never in my plans. I knew my strengths so I chose to concentrate on my studies. I graduated as a dean’s lister in 2004 from Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Computer Science. In five years, I went from being a programmer, to a project manager for a large telecommunications company, to an I.T. consultant for an international firm.

Needless to say, being an I.T. programmer and a beauty queen were on completely opposite poles. I must admit I had never watched a beauty pageant, even my mother’s. I had almost no modeling experience. My world was different from the glitz and glamour of Bb. Pilipinas, but I did not let that stop me. I wanted to try and I wasn’t going to let my inexperience discourage me.

The pageant was not without challenge. I was constantly asked whether I was pressured by my mom’s legacy. Strong competition surrounded me and there were expectations to do well in the question and answer portion due to my “bookish” background. Without focus, it could have been very easy to lose confidence and be overcome with anxiety. But I did not allow myself to become distracted. This for me was a competition against myself.

I worked hard to learn the ins and outs of being a beauty queen. Many sleepless nights were spent “YouTube-ing” past pageants. I read up and wrote down my thoughts on almost every world issue. I learned to put on make-up by watching the artists paint my face.

I experimented with different hairstyles to see what best suited me. Despite the initial awkwardness, I found the courage to go out in my swimsuit and strut my stuff in front of millions of viewers. I swallowed my fear of tripping on my very long gown and learned how to walk down the stage with the confidence of a pro. I smiled like a winner every day despite the lack of sleep, an aching back and painful throbbing feet. To me, success was measured by my ability to bring out the best in myself, to lose all inhibitions, fears, and insecurities. I stood there and gave it everything I had. I knew I did my best, and with that alone, I felt that I had won.

The night before the pageant, every contestant was dreading the Q&A portion. Standing in the spotlight at Araneta Coliseum and on national television, dressed in a two-piece swimsuit, expected to think quickly and speak sensibly was no easy task. As with every other night, I read one chapter of my Bible before going to bed.

It so happened that that night I was on Exodus, Chapter 4, Verse 12 (Exo.4:12) reads, “I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” I was overwhelmed. Right then and there, I knew that He was with me. Come pageant night, I lifted my eyes in prayer and dedicated the competition to Him. True enough, He carried me through. My prayer always was that His will be done in my life. I knew that any outcome was part of His perfect plan for me. Now I am excited to see where this will lead me.

I’ve learned from this experience that anything is possible with determination, hard work and prayer. I want my story to be an inspiration for Filipinos to believe the same. We are a very gifted and talented people. We can succeed as a nation if only we learn to believe in our own potential and unite to work towards a common goal.

Let us stop looking to others for salvation, but instead act within our capacity to contribute to the betterment of our country. So stand up and do something. Do not be afraid to try. Start that business you’ve been dreaming of. Stop corruption.

Restore your family. Encourage your children. Instill in them good morals and values. Recycle. Excel in every good thing that you do. There are many ways to contribute. Now is the time to act. Our country’s future is in our hands, if we would only try.

Beauty queen almost 'tanned herself to death because of sunbed addiction'

23 March 2009

A former beauty queen became so obsessed staying attractive she nearly tanned herself to death after becoming addicted to sunbeds as a teenager.

Brittany Lietz, crowned Miss Marlyand in 2007, spent all her time perfecting her appearance for pageants, which included two and half hours per week on tanning machines.

But after developing stage two melanoma at 19, she had to undergo 30 operations to remove cancerous moles.

Miss Lietz admitted she nearly lost her life due to her obsession with beauty pageants.

The 22-year-old, now married and expecting her first child, said: "I always had pale skin and wasn't really into sunbathing.

"But after I'd done a couple of pageants, I noticed all the girls there did indoor tanning.

"I didn't think I'd look attractive enough for the swimwear round if I was really pale."

She added: "At the time there weren't any laws or restrictions in Maryland as to how old you had to be to go on a sunbed.

"I told my mum and she wasn't happy about me going. She warned me not to do it but I didn't listen to her."

The former pageant queen, who is training to be anurse, started tanning for just eight minutes a session but she wasn't happy with the results and thought she wasn't brown enough.

"I started going once or twice a week and I loved the way I looked," she admitted.

"I thought I looked healthier and I thought other people would think so too.

"But the more I did it, the more I needed it. I got addicted very quickly.

"Within two years I was going five or six times a week for 30 minutes a time.

"I was so dark that I don't think I could have got any darker. I was officially a tanorexic."

She later went away to college where no-one was aware how often she was using sunbeds.

But on one visit her anxious mum insisted on checking a mole on her daughter's back.

"I'd had a mole on my back since I was about 11 and I really hadn't paid much attention to it," said Brittany.

Her mum took the photograph to show a dermatologist who urged her to bring her daughter in for treatment immediately.

Now she is left with scars all over her body and warns other young girls about the dangers of sunbeds and skin cancer.

She said: "The mole removed on my back left me with the biggest scar. It is seven inches long." (telegraph.co.uk)

Miss India hopefuls shut out

22 March 2009

Dreams of Bollywood contracts, television shows and international modelling assignments have been dashed for several young women in the Gulf region who had hoped to compete in the Miss India pageant this year.

The annual Miss India contest has traditionally attracted entries from across India and around the world, and there is fierce competition for the top three positions, which open doors to glamorous careers and other international pageants, including Miss Universe and Miss World.

For Poonam Mahay, 22, of Dubai, and some other would-be contestants in the region, however, it is not to be – this year, at least. Sponsorship has fallen significantly because of the global financial crisis and the organisers decided to call off the necessary preliminary contests or auditions outside India.

For Ms Mahay the news came as a cruel disappointment. Over the past seven years she has been looking forward to the chance to take part in one of India’s top beauty pageants, modelling and honing her speaking skills while she completed her education.

Instead, she finds herself one of several expatriate Gulf Indians who cannot attend.

“I’ve been asked for the past three years to take part. But I told everyone that I would only do it when I was ready for it. I had been working and studying before and I wanted to be prepared completely for it and that’s why, this year, I felt that I was. Then recession hit and bam! and sponsors were backing out.”

Although there are other competitions for expatriate Indians, such as Miss India Worldwide, Ms Mahay said her hopes were on Miss India because it led to the better-known international pageants.

“There were auditions and everything happening. All of a sudden all of it was scrapped. I am very disappointed. I had high hopes for this year but I guess now I have to look forward to it for next year.

Three young women from the Middle East took part last year, and two of them – Aakanksha Mansukhani, of Dubai, and Shruti Dilip, from Oman – finished in the top 10.

Ms Mansukhani, 23, was crowned “Miss Beautiful Eyes” in the final and also won a viewers poll. She has since moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in Bollywood.

The winner in 2007 was also an expatriate, Sarah-Jane Dias, of Muscat, who is now a video jockey with Channel V, a Hong Kong television music channel. With their unconventional looks and attitude, as well as their westernised accents, such women are in demand to present programmes that cater for younger audiences and reach markets outside India.

Emirates Vision, a Dubai-based event management company, has had a contract with Miss India since 2007 to send expatriate contestants to the competition, including girls from the Middle East and Europe.

John Mathew, the managing director of Emirates Vision, said his company and the pageant were working out a permanent strategy to enable overseas contestants to enter again from next year.

“The girls might have been disappointed but we told them that it shall happen next year.”

Ms Dilip, 22, who works as a biotechnology engineer in Doha, has been modelling since she was 16. Since her success last year she had gone on to compete in Miss India Worldwide, where she was crowned “Best Smile”. Now she is considering a couple of Tamil film contracts.

Ms Dilip admitted that it cost a lot of money enter one of these contests. Last year, her expenses had included clothes, flights and “a suitcase full of shoes”. (thenational.ae)

Miss India beauty contestants get in shape

About twenty finalists of the Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2009 contest are undergoing rigorous fitness training ahead of the contest in Mumbai next month. The month-long training is being conducted in a gymnasium under the watchful eyes of fitness freaks and professionals to ensure that the eventual winners fare exceptionally well at international pageants.

“It’’s been someday of training but it’’s not done. As far as I am concerned, I have really worked hard, not only this month, but I have been working from two years on this. I think, I should be there in top three,” said Ishita Sarkar, a contestant.

Bollywood actor Isha Kopikar met the finalists at the gymnasium and gave them some tips.

“I told them how important it is to stay healthy versus any particular size. Secondly, it is very important to be disciplined and to focus all you energies on what is really important to win. All other things, which may cause distractions or are less important, have to be overlooked,” said Kopikar.

India first won a Miss World title in 1966 with the crowning of Reita Faria. Thereafter, it took another 28 years for an Indian woman to secure another world beauty title.

In 1994, Sushmita Sen won the Miss Universe crown while Aishwarya Rai secured the Miss World title.

The Miss India contest with its 45-year-old legacy is the oldest and most credible beauty pageant in India.

The pageant has launched many a face like Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra to name a few, all of whom have carved a niche for themselves in the business of glamour. (thaindian.com)

Gandang Binibini: What sets them apart from other beauty queens?

In contrast to Saturday last week when they, along with the 20 other contestants (originally 24 but one was disqualified for posing sexy in a men’s magazine), stood on high heels under glaring lights at the Araneta Coliseum, with nice smiles not leaving their faces even if they must have been hungry and sleepy and exhausted, the three major winners were subjected by Conversations to another round of Q&A in the cool comfort of a Pizza Hut parlor at the Gateway at the Araneta Center in Quezon City where the pictorial was also held in the nearby Oasis.

They were gracious under pressure, poised even under the oppressive summer sun, very confident now that they are titled. According to Madame Stella Marquez-Araneta, head of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc., this year’s batch of Bb. Pilipinas aspirants was one of the prettiest in years, no wonder the board of judges (including 1969 Miss Universe Gloria Diaz, Richard Gomez, Regine Velasquez, Rizal Gov. Junjun Ynares and AFP Chief Alexander Yano) had a hard time picking the winners.

They are:

• 2009 Bb. Pilipinas-International Melody Gersbach (half-German/half-Filipina) who will compete in the Miss International contest in Japan (for the pre-fnals activities) and Macau (for the grand coronation);

• 2009 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Pamela Bianca Manalo, for the (58th) Miss Universe Pageant in Paradise Island, Bahamas, sometime in August. (She’s the niece of 1968 Bb. Pilipinas-International Nini Ramos and the sister of Bb. Pilipinas-World Katherine Manalo); and

• 2009 Bb. Pilipinas-World Marie Ann Umali (half-Lebanese/half-Filipina), for the Miss World contest in South Africa later this year.

Come, let’s pick the brains of the three Binibinis.

As a Binibini, what qualities of the Filipina would you highlight in the international contest?

Melody: The simplicity, confidence and positive attitude of the Filipina today.

Bianca: Her strong faith in God, her positive values and good morals.

Ann: The modern outlook of the Filipina, her dynamism, the way she can play multiple roles in the society — as her husband’s partner, as a leader and as a mover.

Who is your role model and why?

Melody: My mother, Marina Manuel Gersbach. She has a strong character. A typical Bicolana. She has determination. As far as she’s concerned, nothing comes her way. To her, everything has a solution.

Bianca: My sister, Katherine Anne Manalo. She plays very well her being the eldest sister in the family. She leads by example. I am a Binibini today because of her. As Bb. Pilipinas-World (2002), Ate Kate represented our country very well at the Miss World contest.

Ann: I also look up to my mother, Renita Umali, a Batangueña. She’s the source of my strength, she’s my inspiration. She taught me the values in life and the importance of respect not only for elders but for everybody.

Young people today are liberated and adventurous, willing to try everything. What’s your stand on pre-marital sex and contraceptives?

Melody: The young are really curious; they want to experience everything. Pre-marital sex is a matter of choice. If they are old enough, they should know the consequences of their actions. Contraceptives? I’m pro-life. Again, it depends on the person. She has the right to decide for herself.

Bianca: Everyone has a right to decide what to do with her life. Personally, I’m not for pre-marital sex. You give “it” only to someone you love, someone that you marry. I’m also against the use of contraceptives of any kind.

Ann: If they can say no, say no. I believe in the sacrament of marriage and that sex should happen only between married couples.

Regarding contraceptives, nasa desisyon ‘yon ng taong involved.

After two women presidents, should we have a third one?

Melody: In terms of leadership, gender shouldn’t be an issue. Women of today can do men’s jobs. What matters is a good platform. A good leader, whether a man or a woman, should know how to listen to the people.

Bianca: Gender doesn’t matter. The important thing is the sincerity to serve the people and not her (the leader’s) own interests. She must lead by example.

Ann: Gender shouldn’t be the basis for choosing a leader. What’s important is the capacity to lead, and a heart for public service.

If you were Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, what are the three priority problems that you would attend to?

Melody: First, poverty. Second, education. Three, the environment.

Bianca: Education is a basic right and everyone should have access to it. Job opportunities. And poverty. If everyone gets good education and land good jobs, then it would be easy to eradicate poverty.

Ann: Poverty, because it deprives people of choices and opportunities. There’s also environmental issues like forest denudation. And, the traffic situation.

You seem perfect. What do you think is wrong with you and how do you want to fix it?

Melody: I’m happy with myself and with what God has given me, so I won’t change anything in me. But I want to be a better person and my being a Binibini will definitely help me in that area.

Bianca: I’m happy with myself. It’s not really changing but I want to improve myself. With experience, I think I can do that.

Ann: I don’t find anything wrong with me. But I am open to improvement. I want to grow old gracefully.

Who would you choose, a rich man who is not good-looking or a handsome guy who has no money?

Melody: The one who’s not rich but good-looking. If we work hard together, we can become rich. Money is not an issue with me.

Bianca: What’s important is not how rich he is or how guapo he is. Ang importante is that he is God-fearing, honest and thoughtful. And, most important of all, he should be faithful.

Ann: What’s important for me is that I love the guy and he loves me, too. I want to be in a relationship that is pure and sincere.

Do your boyfriends possess the qualities of your ideal man?

Melody: My boyfriend is the vice president for operations of their family business. He’s responsible, he has his own goals and, like me, very close to his family.

Bianca: He’s a pilot trainee. He started pursuing his dream of being a pilot when he learned that I would be a flight attendant. Yes, he has all the qualities of my ideal man. He’s religious like me. We hear the early-morning Mass together every day. Before going home, we would drop by the Adoration Chapel. What I want most about him is his strong faith in God. If you have that, everything is possible.

Ann: My boyfriend works in their family business (billboards). He fights for his principles and he fights for me. He’s sincere, very positive.

If you were somebody else, who would you like to be and why?

Melody: Princess Diana. I like her passion in life which was to be a role model to other people. She was compassionate. She was a princess and yet she was very humble.

Bianca: My mother, Norma Ramos-Manalo. I appreciate her patience. Even if we may have disappointed her, still she understood. She’s there to support us in all our endeavors.

Ann: Josefa Llanes Escoda, the founder of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. She was an excellent civic leader.

Describe yourself in three words.

Melody: Positive. Goal-oriented. Humble.

Bianca: Not just three words... I am a woman of faith. I have a strong faith in God... I am loving. When I love, I love unconditionally... I am humble. I don’t let things go to my head. I keep my feet on the ground. And I know how to look back.

Ann: Passionate. Generous. Lovable.

A Gallery of Black Beauty Queens

18 March 2009

Black is beautiful. With the election of Barack Obama as the (44th) first Afro-American President of the United States, black will be the brightest color not only in the (still) Land of Milk and Honey but beyond.

Inspired by Obama’s landmark victory, Funfare asked its “other beauty expert” Celso de Guzman Caparas (now working in Saudi Arabia) to make a list of Black Beauty Queens.

Here they are:
• Oprah Gail Winfrey — As 1971 Miss Black Tennessee, Oprah represented the state in the 1972 Miss Black America pageant. She was also 1971 Miss Fire Prevention of Nashville. An Emmy award winning television host/producer, Oscar and Golden Globe nominated best supporting actress, media mogul and philanthropist; Oprah received the highly coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1998. Isabel Allende on stage — a magical translation

17 March 2009

When Cuban-American playwright Caridad Svich was approached to adapt “La Casa de los Espíritus” (“The House of the Spirits”), she reread the magical-realism classic in both English and Spanish.

But in the end, Svich didn’t use any of the original text in her Spanish-language theater adaptation, which is playing at Repertorio Español on E. 27th St.

“This is another beast entirely,” says Svich, who calls her work a new play based on the novel. “It is very much my response.”

“La Casa de los Espíritus” catapulted Chilean author Isabel Allende into literary fame when it was first published in 1982 in Spanish. It has since been translated into 20 languages.

“It’s a novel most people adore,” says Svich of the epic book that covers three generations of women and decades of history.

The story follows the life of the Trueba family during decades of social and political disorder in an unnamed Latin American country not unlike Chile.

“I first read the novel in high school, and I thought it was amazing,” says Svich, who lives in New York. “ Then, the movie: Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Wynona Ryder… very Latino cast!” she laughs, referring to the 1993 film.

“I was thinking there was something it hadn’t captured, even though it had all these amazing actors, and felt sad about it. ... I put the book away, I put everything away related to the book.”

Until director José Zayas approached the award-winning playwright, whose work has been staged in the U.S. and abroad, about doing her first work for the theater in Spanish.

The novel was first adapted for the stage in the 1990s in Britain, and in 2007 in Seattle. The former lasted seven hours and was performed over two nights.

Svich was keen on keeping her play under three hours, which meant “eliminating things that I love, and cutting corners. ... Nothing against expansive theater, but after a certain while, people need to leave.”

The result is a powerful new play.

Where Allende’s novel is heroic, eloquent and, of course, magical, Svich’s play is raw, original and provoking.

In addition to the key characters and subplots — as well as songs she wrote herself — Svich incorporates surveillance video and film projections to evoke the oppression of the dictatorship.

The play also serves as an inadvertent tribute to Hispanics in New York, since Repertorio’s version showcases the range of flavors and accents that color Spanish in the city.

Though lead actors Nelson Landrieu and Beatriz Córdoba — who play Esteban and Clara Trueba — hail from Uruguay and Argentina, countries that are linguistically similar to Chile, other actors have different backgrounds.

Rosie Berrido and Selenis Leyva, who play Férula Trueba and Tránsito Soto, respectively, were born and raised in New York City. And Puerto Rican-born Denise Quiñones, a former Miss Universe, plays Alba Trueba, and narrates the whole play from a torture chamber, where she is held captive.

“Denise has a very soft Caribbean lilt; she created neutral ground for us,” says Svich.

Asked who would play the Truebas should her play move from the stage to the big screen, Svich laughs and says, “I would definitely want an all-Latino cast. No dream actors in mind ... unless Javier Bardem were to step up to play Esteban Trueba.” (nydailynews.com)

Mrs. World in Vietnam

16 March 2009

Duc Hanh meets Doan Thi Kim Hong, the first ever Vietnamese representative at the Mrs World pageant, who is now helping to bring the contest to Vietnam

Young, long legged single girls can’t hog the limelight all for themselves. Mrs. Vietnam, a beauty pageant for more mature women, which will be held in Vung Tau this September, aims to find the most talented and beautiful career woman in all of Vietnam. The lucky winner won’t be going far as she will be representing her country at the Mrs. World pageant, also to be held in Vung Tau, in November.

Doan Thi Kim Hong was the first woman to ever represent Vietnam at a Mrs. World pageant in India back in 2005. Kim Hong, the Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City-based CIAT’s (Advertising & Trade Fair Joint Stock Company) Management Board, didn’t win the overall prize but she was declared Mrs.

Congeniality and also showed her strength and athleticism by winning the mountain climbing event. Each year the Mrs. World contest aims to find and honour “the model of a modern woman”. It’s easy to see how Kim Hong dazzled the judges as a beautiful mother with a highly successful career. Although, success in business means she barely gets a minute for our quick interview. Her mobile phone rings continuously, while assistants come and go with queries and messages as we chat.

Despite the interruptions, she remains composed, smiling radiantly throughout, as if the stress and strain of work is like water off a duck’s back. She appears younger than her age (she’s 40 years old) and at times it’s hard to imagine the woman in front of me is a single mother of a 12-year-old boy. “It was very hard to be the first Vietnamese woman to enter the Mrs. World Pageant,” she says.

“With the exception of my eldest brother, everyone I knew opposed my decision openly! They could not understand how a mother with a son could attend a beauty contest. “I overcame every comment, every sneer to enter the competition. Because I knew that the contest honours the model of a modern woman, who is accomplished in her career, and family.” The Mrs.

World beauty contest was inspired by a beauty contest for married women held in the US back in 1938. Over the years the contest had its ups and downs and was halted for several years before it was re-started in 1977. Married women, widows and even elderly women were allowed to enter the contest. “It’s very lucky that I won small prizes in the international contest as it filled me with self-confidence, determination and ambition to bring the Mrs.

World Pageant to Vietnam. Vietnamese women are very beautiful, charming and capable – why not have a contest like this for them?” says Hong. Three years after her own contest, Hong convinced Nguyen Dieu Hoa, a former Miss Vietnam in 1990, and now the director of Phoenix Commodities as well as a mother of three, to enter the Mrs. World Pageant 2008 in Russia.

“I was very happy to help Dieu Hoa get in the Top 5 at the contest,” says Kim Hong. “The success of Dieu Hoa also helped me a lot when trying to convince the Organisation Board of the Mrs. World Contest, Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial authorities and Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to approve my company’s plan to host both Mrs. Vietnam 2009 and Mrs. World 2009 in Vung Tau.”

As a kid Kim Hong dreamt of becoming a doctor or a policewoman, but in the end she studied music and she started out as a music teacher in a secondary school, before becoming marketing manager for the Vietnam National Trade Fair & Advertising Company (Vinexad), then director of VCCI’s advertising company.

Thanks to her success at Mrs. World 2005, Kim Hong has turned CIAT into one of the top companies for consultation and event management in Vietnam. “People often think that a businesswoman does not have enough time to do their housework. But they are wrong. I inherited my kind-hearted, unselfish, devoted and patient character from my mother,” says Kim Hong, who is now also the head of the Mrs. World-Vietnam Organising Committee.

“She helps me a lot to overcome the despair of my marriage. I feel happy to live with my mother and my little son. I am happy to cook meals for my son and to take care of my mother after work. “Do I lack a man in my life? Oh no, I have a little 12-year-old man at home and I feel very happy and optimistic though my family situation may not be as perfect as other women’s.”

Kim Hong’s company has experience in beauty pageants after working on successful events such as Miss Ethnic Vietnam 2007 and Miss Universe 2008 in Nha Trang. Details about Mrs World 2009 can be found on www.mrsworld.com. “I believe that the contest will be a successful one,” says Kim Hong.

“I hope that through this contest I can promote my country’s wonderful scenery and friendliness of the Vietnamese people while honouring the beauty of Vietnamese women as well.” No doubt in regard to that last wish, she is leading by example.(english.vietnamnet.vn)

The backstage fiasco of the inaugural Miss World St. Kitts/Nevis Pageant

15 March 2009

An event, which was touted to be a history-making moment for five young ladies of the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, eventually turned out to be a nightmare.

This, among others, was the sentiment expressed by some contestants who competed in the first ever Miss World St. Kitts/Nevis Pageant held at the Marriott Dome on Saturday, March 7.

The night saw not only the contestants complaining, but also members of the large audience who was first turned off by the late start. Of course, like any other pageant, there are minor glitches that cause a late start but, according to many patrons, minutes to 10 o’clock was just overbearing when it was known that the event was scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

According to one contestant, Donella Dias, who was not far from leaving the Dome moments before her Talent appearance, the organisers made fools of them on the night of the show. She claimed that nothing was properly organised, and even when it was 8:00 p.m. the swimsuits for the opening number were not distributed.

She went on to say that the organisers promised to provide everything for each segment, with the exception of the Talent which the girls had to provide for themselves. Dias pointed out that on the night of the pageant a number of promised items were not provided and the contestants had to resort to their own footwear.

Dias added that the hairstylist who was assigned to the contestants did not turn up and they all had to request the service of the one assigned to the models. She also stated that there was only one makeup artist for over 10 models and the five contestants.

SKNVibes also spoke with Tesia Burton, the Second Runner-up, who said there was a lack of communication between the organisers and the contestants. She said “only one girl knew everything” while the other contestants were left in the dark.

Burton, who did not appear on the stage in the Introductory segment, said it happened because she was not told by anyone that they were ready to start the show, as she was busy in the bathroom trying to get into her swimsuit.

She added that her swimsuit did not fit and she had to stretch it to make it wearable. “We did not get to fit our swimsuits before the night of the show after weeks of asking” she said.

Burton said that after the first appearance and with all the commotion backstage, she was totally upset, turned off and did not care what the outcome was. She did not want to reappear on the stage. She said the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Chevaughn Richards, kept putting the blame on the organiser, Eversley Liburd, while Liburd in turn blamed Richards.

Burton said that the only reason she decided to go through with the show was the thought of the people who were there to support her.

Richards however gave a totally different version of what transpired on that night. The PRO said she was surprised when she arrived at the Dome and found that the girls were not there, but at the hotel getting their hair and makeup done.

Richards said she was at the venue earlier that evening but had to leave to tend to some urgent business, which she stressed was not on her behalf, but was necessary. “I then however left specific instructions of which none were followed upon my return” she added.

“I worked very hard on this show. I did my part and had to pick up in areas that were not mine; but I am not pointing fingers at anyone although all are being pointed at me. Many shows experience problems. This is not the first, but the important thing is that in the end there was a show”.

She explained that everyone had a role to play and one person could not be blamed. She added that the contestants knew what they were responsible for.

When asked about the contestants not being able to fit their swimsuits until it was time to go onstage, Richards said it was a blatant lie and she is disappointed in the person(s) who said that.

“All of the contestants fitted their swimsuits starting from the Thursday prior to the pageant, with the exception of Sidamo Jones who could not make it down from Nevis. One contestant even fitted hers at my house,” she stated.

Commenting on the hairstylist who did not show up, Richards said, “These things happen at last minute. People sometimes decide not to show up for whatever reason, but that was not on our behalf.”

Richards however wished all the contestants best of luck in the future. She also congratulated the winner and the runners-up and hopes that the pageant gets better over the years, as this was the first.

Speaking with the organiser, Liburd told SKNVibes he had no comment to make except that every pageant has its hiccups.

“You just have to take what you have and make it work. There was indeed backstage drama and that would not have happened if persons did what they were supposed to do. I am already thinking about next year and that is what is important,” he said.

In many people’s opinion, Venetta Zaker deserves wearing the crown but the poor organisation of the show was a complete turnoff for them. Some patrons were very loud in their comments as they were heard saying, “Well ‘sa’ if ah knew this is what ah was coming to I woulda stay home.” Others said “thank God for the Okolo Dancers”, who brought some life to the first ever Miss World St. Kitts/Nevis Pageant. A Nurse Might Represent Canada in Miss Universe 2009

14 March 2009

PGRH nurse trading her scrubs for an evening gown at the Miss Universe Canada pageant

Brains and beauty come together as Christina Heslenfeld, an operating room nurse at PGRH, competes for the title of Miss Universe Canada 2009.

Heslenfeld, 23, grew up in Terrace and said she always wanted to be in a pageant - even as a little girl. While performing with a troupe of dancers during the Miss Terrace contest when she was eight, she saw all the pretty girls in fancy dresses and made herself the promise to one day be in a competition like that one.

With encouragement from her friends, Heslenfeld sent in photos to the Patti Falconer modeling agency in Vancouver that chose some of the girls to be in the contest. She promptly got a call from the agency asking her for an in-person interview. Heslenfeld declined, not wanting to travel to Vancouver just for the possibility of being chosen. Every couple of months the agency would call and ask her again to come for the interview, she said.

On a trip to Vancouver in January she met with the agents and they chose her to be in the pageant.

"I don't know why they chose me," Heslenfeld said with a laugh. "This is my first pageant ever."

The Miss Universe Canada 2009 contestants will be competing to represent Canada in the Miss Universe pageant held this summer. There are more than 50 women competing for the Canadian title from May 8 to 16 in Toronto.

There are three categories the contestants compete in, physical fitness (bathing suit), personal interview and evening gown.

Heslenfeld said each contestant provides their own evening gown, and the bathing suits are provided and are specially made for each girl, with similar material and colours used, but the design of the suit will be unique to the individual.

Heslenfeld is hoping she can get sponsorship to go to the competition and is asking for support from the community. (princegeorgecitizen.com)

Beauty Tidbits

11 March 2009

Officials hope Miss Universe pageant boosts Bahamas tourism - Officials in the Bahamas are hoping this year's Miss Universe pageant will add some beauty to an ugly year for tourism.

Tourism Minister Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace says he expects every hotel room on Paradise and New Providence islands to be filled for the Aug. 30 competition.

The minister told reporters that the event will inject millions of dollars into the struggling economy.

This year's pageant will be at the Atlantis resort, which recently laid off 10% of its staff due to the global economic slowdown. (usatoday.com)

Pageant Tragedy as Reported by Critical Beauty - Allan Ooi, who was first runner-up in Mister Singapore 2001, was found dead below a busy bridge in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday. He had disappeared for months, including having gone AWOL (absent without official leave) from the army since October last year. The SAF (Singapore Air Force) had tried unsuccessfully to contact him, according to a spokesman. He was 28. A family friend, who declined to be named, said it was known that Ooi had been unhappy at work 'for a long time'. He had been serving his term with the SAF and left friends and family bewildered when he left without a word. His death is suspected to have been a suicide. Melbourne police are still speaking to witnesses and are preparing a report that will be sent to the Melbourne Coroner's Court. A spokesman for the Melbourne police said Ooi was seen getting out of his car on the bridge before 4am on Tuesday. (The Straits Times, Singapore)

Family lost touch after October - The family of Captain (Dr) Allan Ooi, who was found dead under a bridge in Melbourne on March 3, heard from him a month after he went absent without official leave from the armed forces last October.

The 27-year-old ignored their cellphone calls as well as their text and e-mail messages for a month before finally sending a short response by e-mail.

'He said he loved us and he was doing well, and he told us not to look for him,' his sister, Ms Lynette Ooi, 24, told The Straits Times yesterday.

The family had been in a tizzy since they received a call from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) informing them that he had not turned up for work.

Ms Ooi said their parents, obstetrician and gynaecologist Alex Ooi and general practitioner Lucy Ooi, were then in London with her. Their brother, Adrian, 28, was working in the Singapore General Hospital.

Private investigators were hired and a missing persons report lodged with the police, but all they knew at the end was that he had left Singapore on Oct 13.

That day was the last time Ms Ooi heard from him before the AWOL incident. He had sent her birthday greetings via a text message.

'I thought it seemed a little strange because usually he would call me and we would catch up a bit,' said Ms Ooi, a lawyer.

Family and friends flooded his e-mail inbox, pleading with him to return or asking what help he needed to start a new life. They received no word from him.

In 2000, Capt (Dr) Ooi, then 18, took up an SAF scholarship to study medicine at the National University of Singapore. In return, he was to serve a 12-year bond. (straitstimes.com)

Beauty Tragedy as Reported by Criticalbeauty - Fabiola Celadón Faoro, who was a finalist in the Miss Venezuela 1993 representing the department of Trujillo, died in a plane crash on March 1st in Boconó, Trujillo. She was 33. She was travelling on a private plane with five other people who also perished. The beauty pageant business is back

10 March 2009

Another set of national beauties was crowned during the 2009 Binibining Pilipinas pageant at the Araneta Coliseum last Saturday night (telecast was on GMA 7). It turned out that it was the beauty contest’s 45th anniversary, but I only found out about that when host Iza Calzado said so toward the end of the three-hour show.

No, there was no grandness to the production, but director Al Quinn still put together a very cohesive show.

The opening number, however, was overextended — with the contestants dancing in what looked like light, but colorful overcoats that they eventually peeled off to reveal casual clothes that they wore while introducing themselves to the Araneta crowd and to the viewers at home.

I don’t know if it was my TV set or the lighting in the coliseum, but no one looked impressive in that part of the show, except maybe for Rich Asuncion, who I thought that time was a cross between Pilar Pilapil and a now very pretty Imee Marcos. And it was only then that I found out her real name was Richelle Angalot. To think I’ve known her this long — she being part of our group that graces openings of Flawless branches all over the country.

When the show got into the swimsuit competition — with the contestants doing the mandatory poses in a resort in Batangas — I thought most of the shots were unflattering. Was it the camera angles that showed most of the contestants with bulging midsections? It was either that or the contestants had too much Pizza Hut.

Then I saw the tale of the tape flashed on one side of the screen: Some of the girls had waistlines as wide as 26”. You could actually mount a flat screen on each of them. To the pageant organizers, send the winners to Gold’s Gym — pronto.

The program, of course, had other features aside from the contestants parading around the stage. This being the pageant’s 45th year, they gathered as many former Binibining Pilipinas winners as possible. Great idea, but messy and tedious in execution.

The cameras could not locate the former titlists. They were either on the wings of the stage waiting for their duties as presenters or scattered all over the coliseum. Some of the names called by host Paolo Bediones probably weren’t even in the venue — like Pilar Pilapil, for example.

In one segment of the pageant — still in line with the organization’s 45th year — handsome glass trophies were presented to the Pinay beauty queens who brought home major international beauty titles. Only three were honored in that portion of the show: Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran and Aurora Pijuan.

Of course, Gemma Cruz wasn’t there because when she won Miss International, Binibining Pilipinas was not yet the local franchise holder of the then Long Beach-based international beauty pageant (besides, didn’t she picket outside the Araneta Coliseum during an edition of the Binibining Pilipinas in the ‘70s and denounced beauty contests as a mere exploitation of women?). But baffling was the non-appearance of Melanie Marquez, while the absence of Precious Lara Quigaman only confirmed rumors that she is at odds with the Binibini organization after she and other beauty queens put up their own pageant last year.

But back to the real stars of the program: The contestants vying for the three major titles at stake. After the presentation of special awards, they were made to parade in evening gowns to the tune of a jazzed-up Hindi Kita Malimot, the arrangement of which worked well for the segment.

Then it was time to reveal the 10 semi-finalists and 2007 second runner-up Abby Cruz, who joined a second time hoping to finally bag one of the crowns, wasn’t in the list. Abby is actually even prettier now, but at 5’5” she was easily dwarfed by the taller candidates. But I have to give it to Paolo for not letting the unfortunate turn of events for his girlfriend Abby affect his job as pageant host. He went on with the show like a pro — like he didn’t have to do a lot of comforting later that night. His female co-hosts Iza and Carlene Aguilar also carried on with their duties like veteran special events emcees.

After the announcement of the 10 semi-finalists came the much-awaited question and answer portion. To the disappointment of the Araneta Coliseum hecklers (and even those at home), there was no Janina San Miguel. Playing it safe, none of the girls winged on and on and most of them kept their answers short and rushed to end their statements with their that’s-all-thank you safety net.

But while grammars were correct and their sentences were well put together and made for pleasant listening, most of the answers were lacking in substance. Very Chiz Escudero — you know, nice to listen to, but is there actually anything there?

But I did admire the contestants even more by the time they got to this round because — for all that pressure (what with the crowd waiting to boo and jeer them with one single slip of the tongue) — they got out of that alive and in one piece. And quite frankly, some of the questions that came from the judges were crappy and didn’t deserve decent answers.

As the pageant got deeper into the night, I noticed that the girls were finally getting prettier. Not just pretty, but lovely. Maybe because there were just 10 of them and that made it easier to dissect every face and figure.

Right before the names of the winners were announced, I had finally placed my bets (I was slow that night). Second runner-up was Regina Hahn, daughter of one-time TV personality Chiqui Brosas, who earlier was 1975 Binibining Pilipinas and fourth runner-up in that year’s Miss Universe pageant. Regina has great personality and maybe should have joined the contest earlier. This close to getting a title was first runner-up Richelle Angalot, who probably should join again another time (or wait for one of the winners to get into trouble and assume the crown).

The Binibining Pilipinas-International title was given to Melody Gershback, who, with her very mestiza features, is so doll-like — very much the kind of look they favor in Miss International. For Miss Universe, they are sending Pamela Bianca Manalo, sister of Binibining Pilipinas-World 2002 Kate Manalo and niece of former Binibining Pilipinas-International Nini Ramos Licaros, who was the producer of Eh, Kasi Babae in the ‘80s.

Chosen to represent the country in the Miss World contest is Marie Ann Umali, another pageant repeater, but is now a big winner — thanks to the unmatched regal bearing she displayed that night of the contest.

Also a big winner was the pageant show itself. In spite of those little rough edges along the way, it was basically smooth and entertaining. The telecast of the coronation night also scored 18.7 percent, which was high enough considering the fact that it started airing at almost 11 p.m. (Eat, Bulaga! and Startalk both went overtime because of the tribute to Francis Magalona and pushed the primetime schedule back.)

Apparently, the interest in beauty pageants is back and the Binibining Pilipinas organizers have Janina San Miguel from last year to thank for that. (Butch Francisco of philstar.com)

Will new Miss Russia be crowned Miss World?

Miss Russia 2009 Sophia Rudieva is flanked by Russian Miss World 2008 Ksenia Sukhinova and Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza

Miss Russia 2009 has been chosen in Moscow. This beauty contest would normally be just one in a series of beauty pageants if not for the fact that recent winners have claimed the Miss World and the Miss Universe crowns.

After blondes dominated the contest in recent years, it was time to pass on the baton on to a brunette. Sofia Rudieva from St. Petersburg was the proud winner of the 2009 Miss Russia crown.

The competition was tough among the fifty participants who came from all over the country. But 18-year old Sofia’s sophistication shone through.

“I had serious support from my twenty friends from St. Petersburg. I want to thank them all. I hope to hug them soon. I miss my friends and family awfully as I have been cut off from them for a month,” Sofia confessed to journalists.

The Miss Russia prize included a $US 110,000 voucher. Sofia assured the press that the money would be given to a charity which protects Russia’s environment.

The event was spiced up by such guests as last year’s Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza and Miss World 2008 Ksenia Sukhinova.

Sophia said she hadn’t yet made up her mind about which international pageants she would enter. But with her 34-24-36 proportions and good English, Russia’s new beauty has every chance to repeat the success of her predecessors who took on the world and won.

Gersbach, Manalo, Umali top Bb. Pilipinas Pageant

08 March 2009

The Binibing Pilipinas Pageant 2009 crowned its top three beauty queens early Sunday, starting with 22-year-old Pamela Bianca Manalo as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, followed by 23-year-old Melody Gersbach as Bb. Pilipinas-International and 22-year-old Marie-Ann Umali as Bb. Pilipinas-World.

Named before them were 26-year-old Regina Hahn as second runner-up and 20-year-old Richell Agalot as first runner-up.

The coronation was held at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, with the show starting late on Saturday. It was aired live over GMA channels nationwide with Paolo Bediones and Iza Calzado as hosts.

The winners were crowned by their respective predecessors – Patricia Fernandez (Bb. Pilipinas-International), Jennifer Barrientos (Bb. Pilipina- Universe), and Danielle Castaño (Bb. Pilipinas 2008).

Castaño replaced Janina San Miguel who resigned late last year after the death of her grandfather.

Winners' backgrounds

Manalo won several other awards – the Best in Swimsuit award, after which she also got a sponsor's honor, the Manila Bulletin Readers' Choice Award. Manalo, a 22-year-old native of Manila, is an Advertising graduate of the Assumption College who now works as a flight attendant.

Gersbach – who did not win any other award – was born in Germany, but her mother hails from the Bicol Region, where Gersbach manages the family restaurant in Albay. She is after all a graduate of the University of Asia and the Pacific with a degree in Management.

Earlier in the night, Umali also won the Best in Long Gown and Miss Photogenic plum. Umali, a native of Batangas City, took up Tourism at the College of Saint Benilde. She plans to be a flight attendant and dreams of putting up her own restaurant.

Runners-up

Shortly before Umali's award, Angalot was named as Miss Talent, for a dance that she performed a week earlier on Talent Night on Saturday. She was also won the awards for Miss Natasha Beauty and Araneta Center Shoppers' Choice – both coming from pageant sponsors.

Angalot, a native of Tagbilaran City, graduated with a Tourism degree from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. Under the stage name Rich Asuncion, she is one of the talents of GMA Network.

Hahn, a native of Manila and Computer Science graduate from the Ateneo de Manila University, works as an information consultant for an international company.

Candidate No. 4 Gizelle Jasmin Rivamonte was named as Miss Friendship, which carried the distinction of having been voted by the other candidates themselves. Rivamonte, a 23-year-old native of Quezon City, is a registered nurse working at the Oncology Unit of the Veterans Memorial Medical Center. She graduated from the Far Easten University.

There were 24 semifinalists, but Candidate No. 13, Sandra Inez Seifert, was disqualified a week before for having done a sexy pictorial that was published in a men's magazine.(gmanews.tv)

Binibining Pilipinas 2009: Just another batch of recycled beauties?

06 March 2009

IF YOU were at the Binibining Pilipinas 2009 press presentation of candidates held at the Sunset Pavilion and poolside of the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel Manila last Feb. 24, you would probably ask yourself this question:

“Is our country really running out of beautiful women?”

Well, the “mother of all local pageants” established by Stella Marquez de Araneta in 1964 has a handful of experienced “conteseras” (gay lingo for experienced beauty contestants) and repeaters in this year’s lineup, for the nth time!

Then there’s also the addition of the younger sister and niece of erstwhile beauty queens as well as the daughter of a former titleholder whose age is already past the pageant’s usual maximum age requirement which is 25.

How come that 26-year-old video jock Joanne “Joey Mead” Pilar Angeles got rejected for being “too old to be a beauty queen” in 2001?

Although the presence of these special girls with familiar faces brought joy to their die-hard supporters and some friends in the media, this scenario certainly sends a wrong signal to hundreds of inexperienced yet very promising ladies out there who also dream of duplicating the feats of Gloria Diaz (Miss Universe 1969), Aurora Pijuan (Miss International 1970), Margie Moran (Miss Universe 1973), Melanie Marquez (Miss International 1979), and Precious Lara Quigaman (Miss International 2005) someday.

They might think that Binibining Pilipinas is only restricted, if not exclusive, to desperate dreamers and next of kin of former beauty queens—so they would just take a shot into newer and lesser prestigious national pageants. But Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. did not give explanations about these things last Tuesday.

Jennifer Barrientos failed to win the Miss Universe crown in Vietnam last year. Miss World contender Danielle Muriel Castaño, despite being a heavy favorite in South Africa, still ended up as a thank-you girl. Only Patricia Fernandez figured prominently in Macau, placing sixth overall in the Miss International beauty congress. Prior to joining the Binibini, Fernandez was Mutya ng Quezon City winner and Mutya ng Pilipinas 2006 first runner-up.

Quigaman, now tagged as one of the three prodigal daughters of Mrs. Araneta—the other two being Karen Loren Agustin and Denille Lou Valmonte who were all reportedly “banned for life” for putting up their own national competition to initiate changes—joined Binibini two times after all.

And so many beauty contest analysts just surmised that la señora de Araneta, erstwhile fashion czar Pitoy Moreno and the rest of the organizers think that selecting ladies with “vast experiences” is indeed a wise decision: They don’t need to spend a lot of time and huge amounts to polish their crowned queens—“slight repairs” will already do.

Here are some of the ladies who are predicted to make their co-candidates compete harder come coronation night.

Do they really deserve to be the country’s bet to the Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International pageants? Let’s see…

Candidate no. 2 Carasheila May Kuijipers (Parañaque), 21, is the most hyped delegate over the Internet. Carasheila, who has British roots, is a print and runway model abroad.

Candidate no. 3 Richell Angalot (Bohol) is known as Rich Asuncion, a contract artist of GMA-7. The Boholana’s claim to fame was winning First Princess in the fourth season of GMA-7’s reality show Starstruck, in 2007. A dead-ringer for Pilar Pilapil, Richell is taking up tourism at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

Candidate no. 6 Maria Paula Bianca Paz came all the way from Los Angeles, California, to try her luck in this pageant. The 20-year-old fashion design and merchandising graduate is the current “apple of the eye” of actor Polo Ravales.

Candidate no. 9 April Love Jordan (Ilocos Sur) is a 20-year-old tourism, hotel and travel industry management senior at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. The former flight attendant and part-time runway model placed second runner-up in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2006 and represented the country in the 2006 Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International contest in Malaysia where she was chosen as Miss Secret Charm.

Candidate no. 10 Priscilla Navidad (Davao City) is the hearing-impaired housemate who only communicates via lip-reading in the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition reality show of ABS-CBN last year. The 18-year-old accounting major at AMA Computer University wants to prove that her disability is not a hindrance in pursuing her goals.

Candidate no. 11 Regina Hahn (Pasig City), 26, graduated with a degree in computer science at the Ateneo de Manila University and works as a professional services consultant. She hopes to equal the feat of her mom, Rosemarie “Chiqui” Brosas-Hahn, who represented the country in the 1975 Miss Universe pageant and placed fourth runner-up.

Candidate no. 15 Pamela Bianca Manalo (Parañaque) is an advertising alumna at the Assumption College. The 22-year-old flight stewardess-cum-runway model is the younger sister of Miss World 2002 finalist Katherine Anne Manalo and the niece of Miss International 1968 semifinalist Nenita “Nini” Ramos-Licaros.

Candidate no. 17 Marie-Ann Umali (Batangas) joined this search to redeem herself and do better this time. A crowd favorite in 2007, the 22-year-old tourism graduate at College of Saint Benilde only landed in the semis after stuttering during the final interview segment, by saying, “In my own words, love cannot be defined, it should be ‘filt’ [She meant felt].” She resembles sexy actress Francine Prieto.

Candidate no. 20 Melody Gersbach (Bicol), 23, earned her degree in business management at the University of Asia and the Pacific. She manages their family’s restaurant business in Daraga, Albay. She won the Miss Bicolandia crown last year.

Candidate no. 24 Abigail Lesley Cruz (Tarlac City) is a runway and commercial model. She competed two years ago, won Best in Swimsuit, but only emerged as second runner-up. Her feats include being Mutya ng Pilipinas 2005 third runner-up, Miss Fort Ilocandia 2005 winner and finalist in the first season of ABS-CBN’s Close Up to Fame: The Search for the Next Close Up Couple. Paolo Bediones’ girlfriend wants no less than a major beauty title in the world!

Completing this year’s roster of candidates are Vanessa Johnson (Pampanga), Miss Philippines-Earth 2008 finalist Gizelle Jasmin Rivamonte (Quezon City), Diana Arevalo (Oriental Mindoro), Binibining Pilipinas 2005 and Mutya ng Pilipinas 2007 thank-you-girl Jane de la Cruz (Bulacan), Cheryl Oliveros (Pangasinan), Binibining Pilipinas 2008 semifinalist Jaysel Arrozal (Valenzuela City), Elite Model Look 1998 delegate Sandra Inez Seifert (Bacolod City), Binibining Pilipinas 2007 semifinalist Keann Mallari (Pampanga), Mary Tiffany Jones (Quezon City), Marie Loraine de Guzman (Makati City), Stephanie Señires (Cebu City), Hazel Sutch (Southern Leyte), Priscilla Mae Honorio (Cebu City), and Barbara Salvador (Marikina City).

Binibining Pilipinas 2009 coronation night will be held tomorrow at the Big Dome. The three-hour extravaganza, to be hosted by Paolo Bediones and Iza Calzado, will be telecast on GMA-7 at 9:30 p.m.

Ex-beauty queen working as journalist held in Iran for buying wine - dad

04 March 2009

A former beauty queen who has been working as a journalist in Iran went missing after she was jailed for buying a bottle of wine, her desperate father said Sunday.

Roxana Saberi, 31, called her dad in Fargo, N.D., from an Iranian jail on Feb. 10 to tell him she'd been detained on Jan. 31. It's been almost three weeks since her call and he has no clue what happened to his daughter.

"We haven't heard anything," said Reza Saberi, who came forward hoping to bring attention to the case and find his missing daughter.

"She said that she had bought a bottle of wine and the person that sold it had reported it and then they came and arrested her."

Buying and selling alcohol is illegal in Iran.

Roxana Saberi, a U.S. citizen who also carries an Iranian passport, moved to Iran six years ago to work as a freelance journalist and complete her master's degree. She grew up in North Dakota, where she was a star soccer player and, in 1997, earned the title of Miss North Dakota and competed in the Miss America pageant.

"She called from an unknown place and said she's been kept in detention," her father said.

A few minutes after that call, she phoned again and said she would be out in two days and asked her father not to do anything.

Officials in Iran have not confirmed the arrest. A State Department duty officer said the agency is investigating.

Iranian officials revoked Roxana Saberi's press credentials more than a year ago, but she kept reporting short news stories from Iran.

Her father said she had planned to move back to Fargo this year.

Miss Universe 2009 Will be Held in Bahamas

The 2009 Miss Universe Pageant is set to be held in the Bahamas later this year.

The August 30th pageant is being presented in collaboration with the government of the Bahamas and The Atlantis Resorts. Gaynell Stubbs, National Director for the Miss Bahamas Pageant, says `this is a dream come true for the Bahamas and could not have come in a better time`.

Miss Universe 2008, Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, will crown her successor at the end of the 58th annual event, which will air live from Atlantis. About 80 countries and territories are expected to compete and the pageant will be broadcast live on NBC and Telemundo. The Bahamas has still no Miss Universe winner.

The announcement comes at a time when tourism to the Bahamas has seen a decline as with many other Caribbean islands and the government has embarked on a `grow your own food` campaign. (caribbeanworldnews.com)

Here is another news article about the staging of Miss Universe 2009 in Bahamas. This is just another confirmation.

The Miss Bahamas Universe Organization is please about the recent announcement that The Bahamas will play host to the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant via the sponsorship of the Bahamas Government and The Atlantis Resorts.

According to Mrs. Gaynell Stubbs, "We are so please about the world coming to the Bahamas. I have wished for this day from attending my first Miss Universe Pageant as holder of the Bahamas Franchise and boast every year to all of the other National Directors at every Miss Universe Pageant, that should they come to the Bahamas- we will show them real hospitality. We now have this golden opportunity to showcase the Bahamas to the world in a unified voice. We will be the world's stage for the rest of this year, but with a lifelong lasting impact - let's do it in grand style - every Bahamian must play their part. I know we can do it hand in hand, step by step and working together. "

The Organization has extended its application deadline for young ladies wishing to compete in the 2009 Miss Bahamas Pageant until March 13th, 2009.

The successful lady winning the 2009 Miss Bahamas Universe crown will be the focus attention for the rest of the world during the Miss Universe Pageant, as she would represent every Bahamian from all walks of life as the official Ambassador at the Miss Universe Pageant to be held here in the Bahamas during late August.

This is a most prestigious and rare honour to be bestowed upon a Miss Bahamas.

Jaws drop at Bb. Pilipinas parade

03 March 2009

MANILA, Philippines—“The most beautiful batch of ladies” was how Paolo Bediones described this year’s roster of Binibining Pilipinas candidates.

Paolo, who’s hosting the annual pageant with Iza Calzado, sounded very sincere — and not just because his girlfriend is rejoining the contest.

Jaws dropped as the ladies paraded in their red printed peek-a-boo Mossimo swimwear at the Sunset Pavilion of Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City last week. Pageant veterans, show biz figures and audacious newcomers are among this year’s contestants.

Paolo’s girlfriend, Abegail Cruz, was second runner up in 2007 and a GMA 7 talent. She is joined by Bianca Paz, who is Polo Ravales’ current flame. Also in the roster is Carisheila Kuijpers, Joross Gamboa’s rumored sweetheart and Estee Lauder Model Search winner in Malaysia.

Other returning candidates are former semifinalists Marie-Ann Umali and Jaysel Arrozal and Miss Philippines-Earth semifinalist and Mutya ng Pilipinas runner up April Love Jordan.

The following local beauty title holders have gotten into the fray: reigning Miss Bicolandia Melody Gersbach; Mutya ning Kapampangan 2007 and former Bb. Pilipinas contestant Keann Mallari; Miss Oriental Mindoro 2007 Diana Arevalo; Miss Cebu 2006 Stephanie Señires; Miss Makati 2006 Marie Lorraine de Guzman; Miss Cebu runner-up Priscilla Mae Honorio; and Quezon City queen Gizelle Rivamonte.

The competition could be made tougher by Regina Hahn, Miss Universe runner-up Chiqui Brosas-Hahn’s daughter, and Bianca Manalo, Miss World finalist Katherine Manalo’s sister and niece of Nini Licaros, the first woman to be crowned Bb. Pilipinas-International.

To make the judges’ job even more difficult are former “Walang Tulugan” host Sandra Seifert, “Starstruck” contestant Rich Asuncion (who’s using her real name Richell Angalot) and Miss Teen Philippines runner-up Priscilla Navidad, the hearing-impaired teen housemate in “Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition.”

Neophytes Barbara Salvador and Cheryl Oliveros, on the other hand, might stage upsets.

The pageant selects the country’s official representatives to the Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International beauty contests.

The outgoing queens are hopeful that this year’s batch will produce winners abroad. Although they have their own bets, they all agree that the contestants are all beautiful and intelligent.

Miss International semifinalist Patricia Fernandez sees at least three contenders who could be short-listed for her title. “I noticed that judges in the Miss International focus on the eyes. They also do not want heavy or muscular women. They prefer cute and charming ladies,” Patricia told the Inquirer.

Danielle Castaño, who replaced Janina San Miguel as the country’s Miss World bet, thinks of four contestants who could inherit her title. “Miss World judges look for someone athletic, who could attract attention right away. She must also be humble, nice and a good role model for the youth,” said Danielle.

Jennifer Barrientos finds two ladies who fit the Miss Universe standards. “In Miss Universe, most of the ladies have modeling backgrounds. But they are not super thin. They are super sexy with a lot of character. They also embody the country they represent,” Jennifer said.

The coronation night is on March 7, 7:30 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum. GMA 7 airs the event at 10 on the same night. (inquirer.net)

Kendall has Miss Universe chance

02 March 2009

FORMER Rockhampton glamour girl Kendall Olive is heading to Sydney in April to represent Queensland for the National Finals for Miss Universe Australia 2009.

The 21-year-old, who grew up in Rockhampton and moved to Mackay a year ago, shone on stage in her stunning bikini at the Queensland final of the competition in Townsville on Saturday night.

Kendall came first in the swimwear section of the competition and will head to the nationals with a Townsville model who won the evening wear segment.

Kendall, who works at Ergon Energy in Mackay, was one of 20 finalists to compete in Townsville on Saturday.

It was a 24-hour whirlwind modeling challenge for Kendall, who drove to Townsville at 6am on Saturday morning after winning the Miss Hawaiian Tropic final in Mackay the night before as well as entering Ralph Covergirl Mackay finals that night.

She also took out first place in the 2006 Ralph Australian Swimwear Model of The Year competition in Rockhampton, representing the city in the national finals.

Rockhampton beauty and Morning Bulletin journalist Melinda Siegmeier also impressed judges as a finalist in Townsville, winning the daywear segment in the same vintage style frock that won her fashions of the field at a Gladstone race day last year.

Melinda's journalistic flair gave her the chance to interview other contestants as part of a documentary of the event.

Overall, Melinda said it was an experience different from other modeling competitions where the judges were a lot more focused on personality and the overall package.

She said Kendall was gorgeous in a green, backless gown.(themorningbulletin.com.au)
