The year 1994 was a landmark year for the pageant industry in India Sushmita Sen won the Miss Universe title after winning the Miss India crown. Sushmita Sen became the first Indian woman ever to win the Miss Universe crown.

The number of participants in the preliminary rounds of the pageant has increased considerably. Miss India World 1997, Diana Hayden won the title of Miss World 1997.Pageant winners are also groomed for months in preparation for the international contest. Miss India hopefuls shut out

Dreams of Bollywood contracts, television shows and international modelling assignments have been dashed for several young women in the Gulf region who had hoped to compete in the Miss India pageant this year.

The annual Miss India contest has traditionally attracted entries from across India and around the world, and there is fierce competition for the top three positions, which open doors to glamorous careers and other international pageants, including Miss Universe and Miss World.

For Poonam Mahay, 22, of Dubai, and some other would-be contestants in the region, however, it is not to be – this year, at least. Sponsorship has fallen significantly because of the global financial crisis and the organisers decided to call off the necessary preliminary contests or auditions outside India.

For Ms Mahay the news came as a cruel disappointment. Over the past seven years she has been looking forward to the chance to take part in one of India’s top beauty pageants, modelling and honing her speaking skills while she completed her education.

Instead, she finds herself one of several expatriate Gulf Indians who cannot attend.

“I’ve been asked for the past three years to take part. But I told everyone that I would only do it when I was ready for it. I had been working and studying before and I wanted to be prepared completely for it and that’s why, this year, I felt that I was. Then recession hit and bam! and sponsors were backing out.”

Although there are other competitions for expatriate Indians, such as Miss India Worldwide, Ms Mahay said her hopes were on Miss India because it led to the better-known international pageants.

“There were auditions and everything happening. All of a sudden all of it was scrapped. I am very disappointed. I had high hopes for this year but I guess now I have to look forward to it for next year.

Three young women from the Middle East took part last year, and two of them – Aakanksha Mansukhani, of Dubai, and Shruti Dilip, from Oman – finished in the top 10.

Ms Mansukhani, 23, was crowned “Miss Beautiful Eyes” in the final and also won a viewers poll. She has since moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in Bollywood.

The winner in 2007 was also an expatriate, Sarah-Jane Dias, of Muscat, who is now a video jockey with Channel V, a Hong Kong television music channel. With their unconventional looks and attitude, as well as their westernised accents, such women are in demand to present programmes that cater for younger audiences and reach markets outside India.

Emirates Vision, a Dubai-based event management company, has had a contract with Miss India since 2007 to send expatriate contestants to the competition, including girls from the Middle East and Europe.

John Mathew, the managing director of Emirates Vision, said his company and the pageant were working out a permanent strategy to enable overseas contestants to enter again from next year.

“The girls might have been disappointed but we told them that it shall happen next year.”

Ms Dilip, 22, who works as a biotechnology engineer in Doha, has been modelling since she was 16. Since her success last year she had gone on to compete in Miss India Worldwide, where she was crowned “Best Smile”. Now she is considering a couple of Tamil film contracts.

Ms Dilip admitted that it cost a lot of money enter one of these contests. Last year, her expenses had included clothes, flights and “a suitcase full of shoes”. (thenational.ae)

Miss India beauty contestants get in shape

About twenty finalists of the Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2009 contest are undergoing rigorous fitness training ahead of the contest in Mumbai next month. The month-long training is being conducted in a gymnasium under the watchful eyes of fitness freaks and professionals to ensure that the eventual winners fare exceptionally well at international pageants.

“It’’s been someday of training but it’’s not done. As far as I am concerned, I have really worked hard, not only this month, but I have been working from two years on this. I think, I should be there in top three,” said Ishita Sarkar, a contestant.

Bollywood actor Isha Kopikar met the finalists at the gymnasium and gave them some tips.

“I told them how important it is to stay healthy versus any particular size. Secondly, it is very important to be disciplined and to focus all you energies on what is really important to win. All other things, which may cause distractions or are less important, have to be overlooked,” said Kopikar.

India first won a Miss World title in 1966 with the crowning of Reita Faria. Thereafter, it took another 28 years for an Indian woman to secure another world beauty title.

In 1994, Sushmita Sen won the Miss Universe crown while Aishwarya Rai secured the Miss World title.

The Miss India contest with its 45-year-old legacy is the oldest and most credible beauty pageant in India.

The pageant has launched many a face like Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra to name a few, all of whom have carved a niche for themselves in the business of glamour. (thaindian.com)

It was a double whammy of sorts. First, exquisite crowns and jewellery exclusively designed by Collection G, in association with D’damas and World Gold Council, for the Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2009 pageant were unveiled at Sahara Star.

And then, the list of finalists of PFMI 2009 was revealed. From over 100 aspiring contestants who were present at the regional rounds, 20 stunning beauties finally made it to the top. These divas came one step closer to ‘Live the Dream’ – of winning the most coveted title – and will compete for the crowns at the Grand Finale stage. PFMI South 2009 and the newly introduced PFMI East 2009 were a major hit in the smaller metros and were received with much enthusiasm. Faith Pandey was crowned the final winner for PFMI South 2009 and Pooja Chopra for PFMI East 2009. Both have got a direct entry into the top 10 finalists of the PFMI 2009 national pageant grand finale.

These 20 finalists, from across India, sizzled on the ramp in the show choreographed by Marc Robinson (fashion director and contestant director, PFMI 2009). The gorgeous ladies were attired in cocktail dresses designed by renowned fashion designer Haasya Chandna. The makeup was done by Vivian D’Silva, make-up expert from Make-up Forever. The Hair styling was done by Najeeb-Ur-Rehman – chief colour and styling consultant from Schwarzkopf Professional.

Adding glamour to the grand evening was the unveiling of the three exquisitely designed crowns for the three winners, crafted by Collection G – a brand for the woman of today – in association with D’damas and World Gold Council, exclusively for the pageant. The intricately crafted crowns, inspired by the Sun, Moon and stars were unveiled by the brand ambassador of Collection G, Jacqueline Fernandez. The trendy Collection G jewellery adorning the contestants lent grandeur and beauty to the evening held beneath the world’s largest pillarless dome at magnificent Tropical Lagoon at Sahara Star.

“These 20 contestants are a young, confident, dynamic and intelligent with aspirational values,” stated Marc Robinson. Zahid Shaikh, chief marketing, Pantaloons said, “As the Pantaloons association with Femina Miss India now enters its third year, the pageant has moved from strength to strength. Youth and style are the cornerstones for both Pantaloons and Femina Miss India where Pantaloons is playing the part of grooming the contestants.” Ajay Mitra, managing director, World Gold Council said, “Gold decorates achievers and winners. This leads to a natural progression of introducing the Collection G ‘MISS INDIA ENSEMBLE’ that inspires women to reach greater heights. Our association with the contest over the last two years has firmly positioned gold on the podium along with the successful new-age women.” GK Nair, director, Gitanjali Group, added, “At Gitanjali, we believe that it’s beauty that captures your attention; personality which captures your heart, and a sparkling beauty should imbibe both these characteristics. What adds to the beauty is the jewellery a woman adorns and what’s closer to her than gold? keeping this in mind our brand Collection G by D’damas has partnered with the contest.” (timesofindia.indiatimes.com)
