Trivia and Scandals at Miss England 2009 involving the winner Rachel Christie

The new Miss England is not only a Miss World 2009 hopeful but also a 2012 Olympics hopeful for heptathlon and the 400 metres dash. At the 2009 Miss World, twenty-year-old Rachel Christie is no doubt will be the winner of the Miss Sports, one of the fast-track events of the pageant.

If we are right with this, then, Rachel will be one of the semi-finalists since winner of a fast-track event automatically advances to the Top 10 or 15.

Rachel, competing as Miss London, won the pageant at London's Metropole Hilton Hotel last Tuesday, July 21st. She also became the first black winner in the history of the pageant by beating 14 other finalists.

The beauty queen is the niece of British Olympic 100 metres gold medallist Linford Christie.

Linford Christie, who still holds the British 100 metres record at 9.87 seconds, won the gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He also won gold at the 1993 world championships and three European championships.

First Runner-up was Kat Hodge, a 21-year-old soldier decorated for bravery in Iraq. Viki Bailey was Second Runner-up.

Miss England Grand Final was decided after a public vote.

SCANDAL IN MISS ENGLAND 2009

Shortly after the announcement of Rachel Christie as Miss England 2009, it has been revealed that she only got 9 votes from the public. The pageant organizer had to come out to defend her.

According to the organizer, Christie was placed first by four of the six judges in the final and won the competition.

But in a public vote before the final, the winner of which won a place in the last 15, Miss Christie - who is also a part-time model - came 49th out of the 54 candidates.

People had been invited to take part in the survey conducted on the Miss England website, with calls costing £1 each on a premium rate phone line.

Fellow finalist Zoiey Smale got 2,013 votes compared to Miss Christie's nine but failed to finish in the top three.

She said: 'I felt quite let down as did all the girls that I spoke to because the ranking three didn't win any of the wards that were available for our hard work in the run-up to the finals.

'There were so many things we had to do. Yet none of it matter at the end of the day. The public vote was supposed to be acting as one of the judges' decisions. It was a big deal to me, but on the night it felt like it meant nothing.'

Organiser Angie Beasley said all the girls knew success in the public vote would only secure a place in the last 15 and counted as one-seventh of the final judging decision.

'When it gets to the top 15, they are judged on their confidence and their posture on stage and they are judged on their beauty and their personality,' she said.

'When it gets to the top 15 you cannot have the public vote judging that, it has to be a professional panel.'

Miss Christie also had a fast-track place because she had won the Helen E Cosmetic Award which guaranteed a spot in the final.

Half the finalists were fast-track contestants.

Current Miss World winner, Ksenia Sukhinova attended the pageant as a VIP guest.

  1. I have competed in pageants nationally and internationally. It is very well known in the industry that Miss England is allegedly fixed.

Many girls now choose to enter other UK Nationals such as those for Miss Universe & Miss Earth, rather than the prestigious Miss England World.

Unfortunately, the practice of the Miss England World organisers has yet to be challenged officially and the contest continues to be run in an unprofessional manner. Indeed, out of all the pageants in the UK, Miss England World is the only one that refuses to be part of an independent body that is run by contestants for contestants.

Of course, pageants are often marred by accusations of fixing but those such as Miss Universe UK go to great lengths to prove that they are not. This year they invited an independent adjudicator to reassure contestants and public.

Unfortunately, Angie does not support contestants and other organisers in making the beauty pageant industry in the UK a better place. She has refused to support campaigns to regulate the industry and to get rid of 'sharks'. Obviously we wonder why. It's disappointing, as Miss England World is one of the most recognised and prestigious competitions. When competitions are run like this, it's no wonder that England never gets close to winning Miss World.

For example, Miss Galaxy UK is an impeccably run pageant; and it's no coincidence that Miss Galaxy UK and Miss Teen Galaxy UK both won the International titles this month in Florida. These girls are true ambassadors, having been carefully chosen by a panel of experts rather that celebrities that don't understand that a pageant isn't a modelling competition. They are the first International winners that the UK has had for a long time.

Back on the subject of Miss England World. Basically, Angie chooses whoever she thinks or knows she can work with for a year having previously fallen out with previous winners. It is common knowledge in the industry that she picks girls that have been part of the 'set up' for a couple of years previously. She often makes sure girls who have competed in her friend's heats are placed to raise the profile of those particular regionals. She also, quite obviously, picks the girls who have generated the most press and publicity for her brand and business.

  4. i was competing in this years miss england. and im just your girl next door, who got involved in this thinking it was going to be fair. I was also competing to become miss london alongside racheal, And i find it was soo unfair, ofcourse she was going to win, with the Olympics and being a neice of someone famous!! so much bullshit! im sorry but i thouhgt it was a beuty pagent and not a fame pagent. Racheal wasn't even the prettiest. she should not of won, but she did. as for ruth dean, shes a bitch! i know why she choose racheal, because shes semi-famous. and i know ruth just want to big up her company. the funny thing was ruth seems soo nice and caring, she leads you on, telling you how well you can do. and you know, i spent alot of money on the public vote. ruth tells you how IMPORTANT it is to vote! yeah so she can have more money in her pocket! obviously the votes dont mean SHIT! someone needs to stop her! because more NORMAL girls like myself are going to apply to this shit and just get conned all the way!! i hate miss england. i hate ruth dean. its soo rigged girls!! trust me! look at our previous miss england. LAURA COLEMAN, the only reason she was miss england was because her mum and grandmother once was miss england winners! and we all know why danielle looyd was miss england, she slept with the judge for anyone who didnt know. so unless your rich, or have a famouse uncle, they are just going to keep on taking your money with a smile, and giving you false hopes! i regret even thinking about miss england. you know i really thought i had the chance. and i got through 3 times, lol. what a joke! i was travelling here there, got my family and friends to vote on different heats, hell I even appeared in the newspapers! and for the miss london city going green, i even went and got a charity shop dress, which was the rules, where every other girl there had their best sexy dress on! what aload of rubbish, honestly. miss england you are fake, and you don't deserve to be there. your just lucky you had big uncle there behind you, or you wouldnt of won. you aint that pretty! lols

  7. I believe people are entitled to their own opinion, however when people are saying things without proof to back their statements up is totally out of order, and just shows your lack of style, and highlights a bit of jealousy!

I can imagine that the majority of people saying bad things about the pageant are competitors that have previously entered Miss Enlgand and not been placed.. along with other pageant organisers who don't get on with Angie and want to tarnish the hard work she has put into Miss Enlgand.

Every Miss Enlgand that has represented our country have been worthy winners.
Don't forget, interviews play an enormous part, and these are private - just between the judges an the contestant. So how are you able to justify what you are saying? That it has been fixed. If your going simply on looks then clearly you don't know the first thing about the motto of Miss England and Miss World - Beauty WITH a Purpose. That is what winners of Miss England reperesent and strive to do.

  8. i have just returned from miss england semi finals last night, and im ashamed at how fixed the whole process was. One girl that was full of herself the whole day, and was quite ugly turned to katrina hodge who was judging, and said see you next week for tea!!! turns out she is one of her best friends. i even know who is set to win the whole competition!! its disgusting..... have a look for yourself on the website at miss coventry- its just ridiculous ad makes the whole organization look like a scam!!!

  9. Amy Jackson showing why she deserved to come third.
Funny how you mention Kirsty Logan she came top 20 and you say you didn't reach the semi finals?

I went into the competition as a nobody, and i came out better for it.

Bitterness and spite. Showing that the judges are excellent judges of character and you don't deserve to stand onstage with the talented, beautiful, intelligent and caring women that I count myself as fortunate to have met.

The competition is NOT a fix and being Anonymous shows how unwilling you are to face the backlash of your actions.

  10. I can't speak for the finals and semi finals but having attended a regional final recently (as a spectator!) I was quite shocked to hear rumblings from other guests who actually stated that the top 2 girls had been picked from the outset because of their connections with sponsors and judges. When the result was announced a gentleman at a nearby table stormed out announcing loudly that it was a fix, several others followed suit. How disheartening for the other contestants who have invested time and money in participating (and some very beautiful girls too!) and what a waste of my £60 for a ticket. Miss England organisers need to address these concerns.
