As expected by many, Miss Venezuela Dayan Mendoza did not fail the high expectations of her fans when she won the Miss Universe 2008 in Na Thrang, Vietnam at the Exhibition Centre.
She was wearing a yellow night gown when recieved the 18K white and yellow gold crown, which was valued at $120,000. She is the 57th Miss Universe and the fifth Miss Universe from her country.
Mendoza was crowned by last year's winner Japan's Riyo Mori who stole the show by bravely wearing a tuxedo instead of the traditional evening gown. This is the first time in the history of Miss Universe that the outgoing Miss Universe wore a non-evening gown. This only shows that Miss Universe under Donald Trump is trying to change the common practices in the pageant.
The 22-year-old beauty was once kidnapped in her homeland when she was a child and says the experience taught her to remain poised under pressure.
Another show stealer is Miss USA, Crystle Stewart who tripped on the floor during the evening gown competition. Surprisingly, this is the second year a Miss USA fell onstage on the same evening gown competition. Last year, Rachel Smith also tripped and fell flat on her bottom. (We'll talk more on this in another blog entry)
Misses Colombia Taliana Vargas, Dominican Republic Marianne Cruz, Russia Vera Krasova and Mexico Elisa Najera are the second, third, fourth and fifth placers respectively.
