More Similar Gowns of Misses Puerto Rico, Mexico, Egypt, Bahamas - patterned from Ellie Saab

That picture posted above is taken from a Colombian message board. A poster found out that the gown of Miss Puerto Rico Mayra Matos is not only an imitation from an Elli Saab gown but also from Miss Bahamas World 2008 Tinnyse Jamel Johnson's.

A reader explained in his comment he left here that this is a natural thing. He said that "nothing is original in the world of fashion. Every design had been done before with little different twists."

He has a point there. And another talk of pageant lovers is the gown of Miss Egypt Elham Wagdi. Many believe that gown was copied from Miss Mexico Elisa Najera's Top gown at Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam.

But if you are thinking Elisa's gown is original, you are wrong since it is also an imitation from another Ellie Saab's gown which was worn before by Halle Berry.

Gowns of Venezuela and Puerto Rico are Imitations from Ellie Saab

Puerto Ricans and Venezuelans look like having a word war in pageant-related message boards regarding their delegates' long gowns. Both parties are claiming, with evidence of course, that the gowns of both Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela and Mayra Matos of Puerto Rico are second rate copycat of Ellie Saab's, a famous designer, gowns.

I guess the Puerto Ricans first discovered the Ellie Saab gown in which Venezuela patterned their dress. To extract a vengeance, the Venezuelans tried so hard to research about the gown of Mayra. Fortunately, they were able to uncover also a gown which is so similar with Mayra's.

The funny thing in this exchange of words is that both gowns were copied from works of one famous designer.

Puerto Rico and Venezuela are one of the countries who take pageant seriously. Both have five Miss Universe winners in their caps.

Below are pictures of Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez's gown and the original gown. I took this from a Puerto Rican message board.

National Costumes and Long Gown at the Miss Universe 2009

The official head shot of Miss Philippines Universe 2009, Pamela Bianca Manalo

Miss Universe candidates from all over the world start arriving in Bahamas one week from now. We have visited different websites and forums and collected some interesting information on some of the lovely candidates. Here they are:

1. Miss Japan Emiri Miyasaka will be the first Japanese delegate to speak English if she can pass through the finals or Top 5. According to her national director, Ines Ligron, Emiri is the most prepared Miss Japan since she started handling the Japanese girls to the pageant.

2. Mayra Matos of Puerto Rico will be wearing a boxer-inspired suit for her national costume. Some argue that she should not win the Best in National Costume award since boxing is not a native of Puerto Rico. They say Puerto Rico can't claim the boxing outfit exclusively. See the pictures below for reference.

3. Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo is no longer dressed by Alfredo Barraza who, for almost a decade, trained the Philippine representatives with no success. Pamela is being trained by a Philippine top model, Wilma Doesnt, with her catwalk skills. Her sister, Miss World 2002 finalist Katherine Ann Manalo is training her how to do well at the question and answer part of the pageant.

It is also rumoured that Pamela will be wearing a Filipiniana terno for her national costume and it is said that the dress was designed by Pitoy Moreno. According to some, Pamela personally chose the dresses she will be wearing in Bahamas.

Will she be wearing a gown made by Monique Lhuillier? What's the truth on this?

4. Miss Singapore Rachel Kum will be wearing a national costume that will be decided by the people via public voting. Six costumes were presented online for voting and the one with the highest vote will be her costume in the pageant.

5. Miss Jamaica Carolyn Yapp is said to be the latest favourite of the Miss Universe Organization. Apparently, the people behind the Miss universe pageant are so impressed with her beauty. If this is true, expect her at the Top 15.

6. Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar's national costume is very similar to a Vietnamese traditional dress. Her costume is kinda good but the gown is not stunning. See pictures below for reference.

7. Miss Vietnam Vo Hoang Yen is definitely one of the most hyped delegates this year together with Miss Japan Emiri Miyasaka. At first we love to see the "photo-chopped" pictures of Vo Hoang Yen but upon seeing more of her candid shots, we are predicting that she will end up not making the cut.

Though Vo Hoang Yen has a good catwalk skill, we doubt if she can score high in the long gown and preliminary interview. Never had a Miss Vietnam wore a stunning gown in any international pageants. We doubt also if she can do well in the interview. But we hope we are wrong since we love to see Asian winning the crown again.

Miss Puerto Rico Gets New Director

Puerto Rico's representative to the Miss Universe 2009, Mayra Matos, is now being directed by Desiree Lowry and Luis Vigoreaux, the new franchise owners starting 2010.

Apparently, the current franchise owner Magali Febles couldn't afford to pay her debts from last year (including the PR franchise fee) and that she'd rather focus her energy in training Ada Aimee de la Cruz, Miss Dominican Republic.

Puerto Rico Leads the Popularity Contest at the Miss International Beauty 2009

Miss International Beauty 2009 is now in Urumqi, China with 42 lovely beauty queens from all over the world who are vying for the title. Read this blog entry for more information on the pageant.

One of the finalists will be selected by a fast track event, the Miss Internet Popularity 2009. According to its official website, the winner "will automatically
advance to the final round of Miss International Beauty 2009 final".

Miss Puerto Rico, Darli Arni Pacheco Montanez, is currently leading the popularity contest with 5100 votes.

The voting is very different since it involves money. 10 votes cost US$3. US$15 makes 50 votes. 100 votes = US$30; 200 votes = US$60; 400 votes = US$100; and 1,200 votes = US$300. One can buy votes through credit cards.

Miss Belorussia Nikiforova Oxana, Miss Poland Piatek Julia and Miss Korea Lee Yoon-a are in second place with 1,700 votes each.

In third place are Miss Russia Botova Anna, Miss Vietnam Diep Hoang Thi Vu, and Miss Mongolia Unurbayar Buyankhishig with 1,600 votes each.

Miss Indonesia Go Ellan is in fourth place with her 1,250 votes.

In fifth place are Miss Uzbekistan Korzhova Olga, Miss Siberia Dolgova Ekaterina and Miss India Tarafdar Payel. The three ladies have 1,200 votes each.

All the candidates except Miss Philippines Lopena Maria Elena Salas have at least 100 votes.

Mayra Matos, Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2009, Dethroned?

We have a big news coming from Rafa of Critical Beauty. Apparently, Miss Puerto Rico 2009 Mayra Matos has been dethroned by the pageant organizer, Magali Febles, who is also the director of Miss Dominican Republic Universe.

Sources are telling that Mayra Matos has been stripped of her title as Miss Puerto Rico Universe by national director Magali Febles. It appears that Mayra refused to sign a contract with a clause that says, "You must not have participated in an international pageant that you won."

Mayra was Miss Teen International 2006 and Magali knew about this. Magali offered the MPRU crown to Mayra's first runner-up, Jennifer Colon, who sources say has flatly rejected the offer and that she supports Mayra all the way. It appears, too, that the contract has been revised by Magali, since it's not the same one that Ingrid Rivera had signed when she was Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2008.

But the Puerto Rican newspaper, Primera Hora just published today that Mayra's dethronement is a purely rumour, that she denies her dethronement, and that she will compete in Miss Universe 2009 in Bahamas. The article also says that Mayra has never received any letter from Magali dethroning her.

Puerto Rico to compete in America pageant

Miss Puerto Rico will compete in the Miss America Pageant in January for the first time since 1961, organizers said.

The 2010 Miss America Pageant will showcase 53 women live on TLC from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The pageant's date has yet to be announced.

"We are truly excited to welcome Puerto Rico back to the Miss America Organization and are thrilled to have Miss Puerto Rico competing this year," Art McMaster, president and chief executive officer of the Miss America Organization, said in a statement. "The Miss Puerto Rico Organization has a tremendous amount of pageant expertise and business savvy, and will surely thrive as part of the Miss America program."

Similar to the states, District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Miss Puerto Rico Scholarship Program will provide scholarship awards to program participants and will hold an annual competition, the winner of which will proceed to the national competition as Miss Puerto Rico.

The Miss Puerto Rico competition will be held in Caguas, Puerto Rico, with the winner being crowned July 18 by Miss America 2009 Katie Stam.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Puerto Rico back into the Miss America Pageant after almost 50 years of absence, added Joselo Sostre, executive director of the Miss Puerto Rico Scholarship Program. " With our current economic crisis, this is a great scholarship opportunity that will provide hope and empowerment to young women who are pursuing their dreams."

Denise Quinones August - A Hometown Winner

Miss Universe 2001 will always be remembered as the only winner of this pageant to win in her homeland - that's Puerto Rico. Denise Quinones August became the fourth winner of this tiny island in the Caribbean.

She is also the second Miss Universe to relinguish her crown in her homeland since the pageant started broadcasting outside USA. The first was Margie Moran of the Philippines in 1974 when she crowned Amparo Munoz of Spain in Manila, Philippines.

While most beauty pageant fans are arguing that her winning was a hometown decision - we could not avoid this kind of thinking if you have won in your own country and this is not only for beauty pageants but it is universal - it is undeniably that Denise is also a deserving winner.

I remember she wore the most stunning evening gown in that year. She was so sexy in that gown showing her form that made her the winner.

Here is an article lifted from this link. Denise is one of my favourites that year but it would have been better if her runner up, Greek supermodel Evelina Papantoniou, won that pageant.

Denise Quiñones August: 1980—: Miss Universe Biography

"I feel like I am living a fantasy," Denise Quiñones August told People en Español. As the 50th Miss Universe, some would say she is. A rural girl from a mountain town, Quiñones had only been competing in pageants for three years before winning the title of Miss Universe. As the fourth Miss Universe to hail from this tiny Caribbean island of 3.9 million people, a U.S. territory, she is also living a fantasy for her people.

Denise Quiñones August (also known as Denise M. Quiñones ) was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and raised in Lares, a small town in the center of the island high in the mountains of Puerto Rico. Her father Hector Quiñones worked as an engineer while her mother Susanna August stayed home to care for Quiñones and her younger brother Hector. "I grew up around nature, nothing especially sophisticated," Quiñones told People en Español. Yet she found her own sophistication in performing. "Dance and song are my passions," she told People en Español. She was just eight years old when she enrolled in the dance school of Estela Velez. She hasn't stopped dancing or singing since. Quiñones first professional dance experience came while she was still a senior in high school. She was selected to dance on one of Puerto Rico's wildly popular variety shows, El Super Show. This led to her being selected to co-host another show Eso Vale.

When not on stage wowing audiences, Quiñones was in school wowing teachers. She graduated from her high school, Colegio Nuestra Señora del Carmen located in Hatillo, Puerto Rico, with honors and was named in the Who's Who Among American High School Students. She had been a straight-A student and a former president of the school's honor society. Though her first language was Spanish, she had mastered English early on, becoming fully bilingual. Following graduation she enrolled as a journalism student in the Communications School of the University of Puerto Rico.

Unlike many pageant contestants who begin grooming for national titles at a very young age, Quiñones was already entering college when she decided to run for the title of Miss Puerto Rico. It fell to Magali Febles, an image consultant who had coached Dayanara Torres, another Puerto Rican Miss Universe, to prepare Quiñones for pageantry. "When Denise came to me she was a diamond in the rough," he told People en Español. He taught her to walk the catwalk, control her movements, and play up her features. Though she was originally adamant about winning the crown as naturally as possible, Febles convinced Quiñones to lighten her hair and have plastic surgery on her nose.

After becoming Miss Puerto Rico, excitement begun to build as it became known that the 2001 Miss Universe pageant would be held in Bayamon, Puerto Rico not far from the island's capital. Quiñones would compete with a home grown advantage. She courted local adoration from the opening ceremony of the 50th Miss Universe Pageant in May of 2001 when she arrived in a be-feathered bathing suit with wings representing a fighting cock. Cockfighting, though considered distasteful and even cruel in American culture, is a popular sport in Puerto Rico and many other Latin American countries. Over the week of the pageant, Quiñones was mobbed like a superstar much to the consternation of the other 76 contestants. Her dazzling smile was plastered across front pages and on television.

However, Quiñones garnered more than just the attention of her countrymen. Pageant officials awarded her the Miss Photogenic title and she won both the Blue-point Swim Fitness Award and Clairol Herbal Essences Style Awards. Her ascension to the semi-finals seemed assured. However as hosts Naomi Campbell and Elle Macpherson read off the first nine names, Quiñones was not among them. "The crowd in Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum held their breath, fearing that perhaps Ms. Quiñones somehow had not made the cut. But then the tenth finalist was announced, and Ms. Quiñones traipsed down the grand staircase at the back of the set, beaming like the queen she would soon become.

"Though all of the finalists were stunning, there was a star quality about Ms. Quiñones—buoyed as she was by the crowd's adoration—that set her apart from the rest".

During the pageant, Quiñones turned for inspiration to her grandmother who had died a few months before. She described to www.pageant.net how she spent a few moments speaking to her grandmother. "I was asking her to be with me in the competition, and I felt her in every part." This inspiration was with her when she was crowned Miss Universe. As her win was announced, the tiny island of Puerto Rico erupted in a cacophony of car horns, sirens, and cries of victory. Quiñones responded to her country's outpouring of joy, telling the assembled press after her victory, "I'm proud to have won this crown….I think I have left a great legacy for my beloved Puerto Rico."

Following her win, Quiñones relocated to New York City and a luxury apartment at Trump Tower which would become her home for the duration of her yearlong reign. The apartment, as well as $250,000 in prizes is part of her winnings. She is also allotted a clothing allowance. In return, Quiñones is expected to travel around the world as a representative of the Miss Universe organization, providing promotional support for pageant sponsors and charities. She has already taken up the struggle against AIDS and made a very public appearance at the AIDS Walk in New York. "By educating people about HIV/AIDS, I look forward to teaching tolerance of people with differences and doing my part to remove the stigma of HIV/AIDS," Quiñones was quoted on the UNAIDS website. "In my travels around the world, I've heard people speaking about AIDS in every language under the sun. If each one of us speaks out, we will overcome this epidemic together," she continued.

As her reign wound down in the earlier part of 2002, Quiñones began to long for her country. "Every day I awake and think of Puerto Rico, especially my family. I want to be with my people and spend time with my father, mother, and brother," she confessed to Revista Vea, a Puerto Rican magazine. When she does return she has great ambitions to pursue. "I would like to be a part of the entertainment and communication industry, becoming an acclaimed singer known worldwide and establishing my own television program. I plan to complete a Master's degree in communications and to continue training in the areas mentioned above," she was quoted on http://www.missuniverse.com/.

During the Miss Universe pageant, Quiñones was asked what she thought the most important thing in life was. She quickly answered, "to be the best I can be." Whether that is fighting AIDS, pursuing a career in showbiz, or inspiring a nation of young Puerto Ricans to love their country and reach for their dreams, there is no doubt Quiñones's best, will make a difference in many lives.
