"Miss Earth Tots Botswana 2008 buried after mysterious death", a headline says

Miss Botswana Earth 2008 died in a mysterious illness.

That's what I thought when I first read the headline of a breaking news from a website in Botswana.

The title says, "Miss Earth Tots Botswana 2008 buried after mysterious death"

Then I continued reading the lead or the first paragraph.

"Eleven-year-old Katlo One Lore, who was crowned Ms. Earth Botswana in 2008, was buried last week Saturday, 27th June, 2008 at her home place, Kanye, following a mysterious illness."

I started to doubt the authenticity of the write up written by Gowenius Toka when I read the girl was only 11 years old. How can she be so young to compete at Miss Earth 2008?

Then I realized there was a serious error in the reporting when I verified that Botswana was represented at the 2008 Miss Earth in Manila by a 19 year-old named Nametso Ngwako.

I hope you weren't fooled too just what exactly happened to me.

*****The first picture is the real Miss Botswana Earth 2008 Nametso Ngwako. The second picture is the girl, Katlo One Lore, who died with a mysterious illness.

Miriam Quiambao's Long Gown Inspired Lara Dutta's

Philippine representatives to the Miss Universe pageant usually wear 80-ish gowns since the start of this new millennium. Binibining Pilipinas Organization is obviously not working out in this issue. Many pageant fans who are mostly Filipinos believe that the lack of support from the pageant organizer to dress their candidates in stunning long gowns is what causing the Philippines their failure to crack to the semis.

But in 1999, ten years ago in Trinidad and Tobago, Miriam Quiambao impressed the universe when she paraded in a breathtaking Halston evening gown which helped her claimed that year's First Runner-Up to Miss Botswana Mpule Kweglagobe.

The said gown is also the same long gown that caused Miriam's infamous fall on stage during the preliminary competition. She slipped and fell when the heel of one of her shoes got caught in the trail of her dress.

Maybe Miriam's gown was one of the best gowns ever wore by a Miss Philippines to the Miss Universe. I said this because I have observed that the following Miss Universe pageant in Nicosia, Cyprus in 2000, some of the candidates had gowns that is so similar with Miriam's.

Have you observed this? If not, take a look on these pictures.

This is Miriam's gown.

Now, take a look on the gowns of the Top 3 finisher that year.

Lara Dutta of India, the new Miss Universe and Helen Lindes of Spain, First Runner-Up wore gowns that was obviously inspired by the gown of Miriam.

Young Muslim beauty can't believe it's true

he newly crowned Miss Botswana queen Sumaiya Marope, 22, says she is still struggling to come to terms with the fact that she has just won the title.

Yesterday morning, the Ramotswa- born queen said she rolled from her bed and fell onto the floor, just to convince herself that she was not in dreamland about her newly found fame.

"I don't know; I'm still trying to figure out whether I'm still dreaming or not. This morning I fell from bed just to check if this is not a dream. It was painful...that's when I realised I wasn't dreaming," she said with a broad smile.
Pain is deeply rooted in the beauty queen's Arabic name, Sumaiya, which was given to her by her Muslim father. Sumaiya, she says, is a name of the first female martyr in Islam. The beauty queen describes herself as a Muslim. " My father is a Muslim, his family is Muslim. I go to the mosque as many times as I can', reveals the beauty.

Her family watched her steal the show on Saturday night. "Everybody was there, it was beautiful, my mom, father, my sister, uncle and auntie, everybody," she told Showbiz.

She says they also stayed and celebrated with her until the wee hours of the morning in her room at the Grand Palm Hotel. "In the morning I had breakfast with my family, as well as lunch, that's how we decided to celebrate the crown."

The helicopter ride? "I felt butterflies in my stomach. It was exciting. But we didn't do much, due to the weather, we didn't manage to fly, we just sat there...it was the weather, it was raining heavily".

Sumaiya is studying for a degree in International Business at Limkwokwing University.

She already holds certificate in marketing management. She also says she studied drama too. "I'm a stage performer, I enjoyed it very much (acting). In fact it gave me the motivation to be come what I am . But right now, I'm not thinking of following up acting, not now," she says, her face lighting up with happiness.

On winning the P300, 000 Mercedes Benz car, she says: "It is an indescribable feeling. It is not everyday that you get a car - a P300, 000 car like that, it is a wow!"

Sumaiya says she does not have a driver's licence for now, but she cannot wait to have one. "I'm planning on getting one," she said. Monday morning she did not have the Benz yet. She had not yet changed it into her name, but she is confident it is only a matter of time now before everything falls into place.

" I don't know where it is right now. Perhaps it is at Naledi Motors."

" It is an elegant car, I love elegance, as Miss Botswana queen. As a young person my other choice would be a 7 Series."

She also reveals that according to the terms of her contract she is not allowed to sell the car during her 12-month reign.

But would she swap anything for it? " Not now. I would treasure it. It will help me reminisce on how I got it. It is a special memory."

Sumaiya has not decided yet whether she will have to suspend her academic programme to fulfill her busy schedule as the Miss Botswana.

" We are only beginning to plan what kind of activities I will be involved in; so we will see. But if push comes to shove, we will have to strike a balance, I might have to do part time."

She says she is aware of rumours that started flying to the effect that she did not deserve the title.

"I have heard that. But I was taught that people will always try to bring you down, but the important thing is to keep your head up."

What is she going to do with her P50, 000 bursary prize? " I don't know.

There's Nothing Gay About 'Gays' - Miss Botswana 2009

New 'Miss Botswana' queen, Sumaiyah Marope, 20, on her crowning night attacked same-sex relationships describing them as 'unnatural acts'.

The beauty queen was asked by one of the judges in the contest, DJ Fresh, to say if she would advocate for same sex relationships.

"It is unnatural act...God made us men and women... It is only proper for men to have relationships with women as God created us," she said to a loud roar of approval from hundreds of the beauty pageant's fans who thronged the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) to witness the 2009 Miss Botswana finals on Saturday night.

The Miss Botswana queen went on to win herself a brand new top of the range Mercedes Benz car worth P300,000, as well as a bracelet worth US$ 700 from US rap mogul, Russell Simmons and a P50,000 bursary for academic programme of her choice. She was later in the night flown around Gaborone city in a special chopper branded Miss Botswana 2009.

The new Miss Botswana queen's condemnation of gay relationships comes at a time when members of a gay organisation in Botswana want legalisation of 'gay' relationships. Prisca Mogapi and Caine Youngman, both gay and also members of the proscribed gay organisation, Gays and Bi-sexual of Botswana Organisation (LEGABIBO), are contesting what they believe to be a discriminatory section of the Laws of Botswana, section 164 of the Penal Code, which does not recognise same sex relationships.

According to information passed to the Sila Press Agency (SPA), the notice to sue was filed recently, and has been supported by a Botswana HIV advocacy body, Botswana Network of ethics, law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA). Attorney, Duma Boko, who in the past represented the marginalised Bushmen when they were relocated from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) by the government, has volunteered to assist the gays.

In 2003, the Botswana Court of Appeal ruled that Botswana was not yet ready for homosexuality. LEGABIBO was refused registration two years ago.

Miss Botswana 2009

Sumaiyah Marope of Gaborone was crowned Miss Botswana 2009. She will represent her country in Miss World 2009, December 12, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The new beauty queen now owns a brand new Benz, worth P300,000. She will get a P50,000 bursary for academic course of her choice. Fuel company, BP, will supply the queen with fuel for a year.

Her first princess, Emma Wareus, walked away with P50,000 cash, while the second princess, Naledi Willers, pocketed P10,000.

America's Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons has sponsored the three winners with approximately P21,000 worth of jewellery.

The queen and her princesses will each get a diamond bracelet worth $700.

The organisers have promised to make the current queen's reign a massive success. They will soon sit down with her and develop her charity profile, which she will be taking to the Miss World pageant where she will represent the country. In the past, Miss Botswana queens have struggled to raise funds for their charity works, clothes and air-tickets to the Miss World pageant.
