Miss Namibia Happie Ntelamo is finally going to Bahamas after facing financial problems

31 July 2009

Miss Namibia Universe 2009 Happie Ntelamo is finally assured of going to Bahamas to compete at the Miss Universe 2009.

The road to Miss Universe was not easy for Happie who had faced financial difficulties. Just last week, the Miss Namibia organization had no money yet to send the black beauty queen to the pageant despite efforts to raise fund or to look for sponsors last week. Thanks God, they were able to get sponsors at the last minute. Happie could be the happiest woman on earth nowadays.

Yesterday in Windhoek, Happie presented to the media her national costume. Namibian Wilemien Chamberlain designed the costume.

Happie is on her way now to Bahamas as she left the country today. Along with her is an item called the "National Poison" - a Nakara Namibia handbag, which she will be presenting at the Miss Universe 2009 Auction.

Goodluck to you, Happie.

Miss Mexico Karla Carillo is First in Bahamas?

Is Miss Mexico Karla Carillo the first who arrived in Bahamas for the Miss Universe 2009 pageant? We got a message from a Bahamian source that (It's not confirmed.) Karla is already in Bahamas and is causing a traffic jam with scores of onlookers and fans at the Cable Beach Roundabout.

We can't verify the message but it could be true since Karla had her send-off party today and Mexico is very near in Bahamas.

Miss Japan Emiri Miyasaka's Atrocious National Costume will be ALTERED!

We have a latest news coming from Japan and I guess this is a good news especially for the Japanese who were disappointed and disrespected by the atrocious national costume of Miss Japan Universe 2009 Emiri Miyasaka showing a little flesh or looking like a porn star.

Bloomberg reported that IBG Japan, which operates the local Miss Universe contest, is making an adjustment with the costume. The decision came after the black kimono outfit Emiri had chosen was criticized as too revealing.

“Considering the opinions we got from many supporters and other people concerned, we decided to make the hemline of the costume longer," IBG Japan posted yesterday in their website.

Our blog, Beauty in Pageants, reported first this which was picked up by other blogs, forums and sites.

On the other hand, we have heard from a source that Emiri will be arriving in Bahamas tomorrow (Bahamas time), August 1st, via United Airlines. This is in contrast with what Ines Ligron, director of Miss Japan Universe, had bragged about in her blog.

Ines mentioned in her blog that Emiri will be flying from Miami to Bahamas with a private helicopter. We'll know the real score tomorrow.

Will Miss Bahamas Kiara Sherman Penetrates the Top 15?

I am excited with Miss Universe 2009 and starting tomorrow we will be witnessing the arrival of all the delegates from around the globe. Bahamas will be the center of the world for beauty pageant lovers like me.

For the last three weeks, we've seen a lot of the latest pictures of some of the delegates who are being hyped by their fans. We saw their transformations. We loved some of them and bashed some of them. But why on earth we aren't talking much about the host country's representative? She's just waiting in Bahamas to welcome all the ladies and I think we need to look at her transformation also.

Kiara Sherman is definitely one of the most bashed delegates this year together with Miss Singapore Rachel Kum and Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo.

Yes, Kiara was lambasted when she won her title by her fellow Bahamians because they believed she was not the perfect choice. But looking at her latest photo, I am convinced that Kiara is working so hard to make her country proud of her.

She is definitely better now and hopefully she might give Bahamas its first ever Top 15 finish in the history of Miss Universe.

Do you think she could penetrate the Top 15 considering homecourt advantage?

Miss Russia Sophia Rudyeva's Nipple is visible in her National Costume

30 July 2009

What is with Miss Russia Universe 2009 Sophia Rudyeva or the Miss Russia organization? Are they trying to stir controversies so that Sophia will be an instant hit once she step down in Bahamas for the Miss Universe pageant?

After Sophia became a favourite buzz in pageant-related discussions after nude pictures of her appeared in the internet, another "scandal" is labeled to her.

Her nipple is hanging out in her national costume!!! Look closely on that picture shown above but if you can't see that nipple, here's a larger photo for everyone.

Holy cow! Miss Universe Organization would definitely not allow this. If Sophia insists, she might be disqualified.

Why does Sophia trying to be so controversial? She's lovely and she doesn't need all these controversies. Don't you think so?

Long Gown and National Costumes of Misses Thailand Chutima Durongdej and France Chloe Mortaud

29 July 2009

The official long gown and national costume of Miss Thailand Chutima Durongdej to the Miss Universe 2009 in Bahamas were revealed in a Thai show the other day.

The Thai organizers made two gowns of the same design but in two different colours - red and blue. I prefer the red one. Chutima's traditional dress is also fantastic and it may win the Best in National Costume.

Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo's Disastrous Long Gown

One of our readers who is also a missosology poster prompted us about Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo's evening gown for the Miss universe 2009 pageant.

The gown is definitely disastrous and this won't help Pamela enters the semis. The gown is 70-ish. The leak came supposedly from a Colombian who is associated with Alfredo Barrazza, the designer.

If this is really her official long gown, then Philippines never learned their lesson.

Candid Photo of Misses Albania Hashna Xhukici and Kosovo Marigona Dragusha

You probably have observed that Miss Albania Universe Hasna Xhukiçi and Miss Kosovo Universe Marigona Dragusha are one of the most hyped European candidates to the 2009 Miss Universe pageant because of their stunning photoshopped pictures circulating in the forums for beauty pageant lovers.

They have been in the favourite lists of self-proclaimed beauty experts or pageant-experts because they're really beautiful in those pictures. We kinda agree.

But we have discovered a candid shot of these two ladies and we admit we were disappointed to see them in this photo. Just take a look on the picture for yourself. You judge it.

Confirmed: Misses Philippines and Colombia are roommates in Bahamas

It's confirmed. Miss Philippines Universe Pamela Bianca Manalo and Miss Colombia Michelle Rouillard will be roommates in Bahamas during the Miss Universe 2009 stint.

Was this possible through Stella Marquez Araneta, Philippine Director for Miss Universe, who is a Colombian? We are just asking.

What's funny here is that Misses Colombia and Philippines will be wearing gowns and traditional costumes made by only one designer, Alfredo Barraza of Colombia. Will they be ripping the Barraza beads on each other's gowns? We are just kidding.

Aside from Pamela Bianca and Michelle, other roomies are Miss USA Kirsten Dalton and Miss Australia Rachael Finch; Miss Honduras Belgica Suarez and Miss Guatemala Lourdes Figueroa; and, Miss Switzerland Whitney Toyloy and Miss Thailand Chutima Durongdej.

Belgica Suarez is Miss Honduras Universe 2009

25 July 2009

We earlier reported here that Honduras might skip the Miss Universe 2009 pageant due to the current political situation in this Central American country. But instead of holding a national pageant, the organizer handpicked their candidate. Belgica Suarez was lucky to be chosen.

For getting the title of Miss Honduras Universe 2009, 23 year-old Belgica will be going to Bahamas to compete for the 58th edition of the pageant.

Belgica said in an interview that "at this moment of crisis in Honduras, it is her responsibility to be an ambassador of culture and awareness of the positive aspects of her country."

The 5'11" tall beauty queen was last year's First Runner-up at the Miss Honduras Universe.

The scheduled Miss Honduras Universe 2009 on July 25th was cancelled.

Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo Withdraws?

Bashing from rabid fans continues against Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo. After calling her names of animals, now, they made her withdrew from the competition.

One of our sources was browsing wikipedia when he noticed the entry about Pamela that was obviously made to lash out the beauty queen. We knew from the start that this is just a prank made by a jealous fan of other beauty queens and for sure, this will be deleted soon.

In the entry, the poster said Pamela withdrew from the competition after she broke her cheek bone while on training in Colombia. Click the picture shown above for larger viewing.

We just hope this thing will not happen on the poster.

But look at Pamela's new banner. She's definitely looking gorgeous here with that "broken" cheek bone. She is in our Top 15. LOL

Miss Vietnam Vo Hoang Yen's Candid Shots

Some of you have been asking me for the past few months if I had "real" photos of Miss Vietnam Universe 2009 Vo Hoang Yen. Most of her pictures in the net are "photoshopped" and it looked like she had none. Luckily, I found some. Though Vo Hoang Yen clearly has thick make up in these shots, these are closer to what she really looks like.

Miss Vietnam Vo Hoang Yen Believes she'll succeed in Miss Universe 2009

Vo Hoang Yen, Miss Vietnam Universe 2009, believes she will fly high at the Miss Universe 2009 in Bahamas. Her interview with Vietnamnet is interesting to read.

Yen said, "Fans have transmitted their strength and belief to me for this pageant, so I believe in my ability to succeed,” supermodel Vo Hoang Yen told Dat Viet newspaper ahead of her impending trip to the Bahamas for the Miss Universe 2009 pageant."

How have you prepared for the upcoming trip?

I’m going to the Bahamas on August 1 to participate in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant. I have nearly completed everything. I only need to pack my things and set off.

My clothes for this trip will include ao dai designed by ABC ao dai fashion and a dozen night gowns and modern fashions by designer Cong Tri and over 20 sets of clothes of my own, totalling nearly 40 sets.

Foreign language, particularly English, has been the weakness of Vietnamese contestants at international pageants, how about you?

I believe in my English because I have studied English since I was a little girl and it has improved so far. Communication is often a weakness for Vietnamese contestants so they can’t show themselves off. I see my English as my forte in this pageant, and it will help me to win people’s sympathy.

What will be your image in this contest?

My style at Miss Universe 2009 will be diversified and versatile. You will see a Vo Hoang Yen, Vietnam’s representative, who is not dependent on any model. She will be very dynamic, unaffected and youthful at outdoor activities and sometimes we will be very smart and noble at evening parties.

Fans’ expectations of you are great, so does that put pressure on you?

I would like to thank everyone. I’m very happy to be listed at the top of the online vote on the Miss Universe website, and be supported by not only Vietnamese but foreign friends. I’m lucky to be highly applauded by many foreigners. Fans have transmitted their strength and belief to me for this pageant, so I believe in my ability to succeed.

How do you feel at this moment?

Cheerful is the most accurate word to describe my feelings at this moment. I’m going to the Bahamas alone but I know that I will have interesting experiences during this competition. I will discover the Bahamas with contestants from all over the world. I believe that I will make many new friends.

* Hoang Yen temporarily ranks first in the online vote on the official website of the Miss Universe 2009, with 13581 votes, followed by Miss Universe Indonesia 13204 votes and Miss Zambia.

Miss Singapore Rachel Kum's National Costume

I mentioned earlier here that for the first time in the history of Miss Singapore Universe, their national costume for the Miss Universe pageant will be decided by the public through online voting.

The reason why the pageant organizers are doing this is because they received flak last year with the merlion-inspired outfit wore by Shenise Wong at the Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam. This time, the organizer would like to satisfy the public.

Ten designs by students of Raffles Design Institute, which draw inspiration from local themes such as the national flower Vanda Miss Joaquim and the twinkles of the city skyline at night, were presented online. The one with the highest votes will be the national costume of Rachel Kum, Miss Singapore Universe 2009.

Here are five of the designs including the merlion-inspired costume.

Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar is scared of tripping on stage at the Miss Universe 2009

Miss South Africa hopes to bring home title

Tatum Keshwar says she is ready to give the other 86 Miss Universe contestants “a run for their money” — but is scared of tripping on stage.

Keshwar, who is to represent South Africa at the 58th annual Miss Universe pageant in the Bahamas on August 23, is scheduled to leave for the Paradise Islands on Friday July 31.

She will compete against beauties from countries such as New Zealand, Spain, Venezuela and India.

The current Miss Universe, Venezuelan beauty Dayana Mendoza, will hand over the title.

Despite the stiff competition, Keshwar told she hoped to bring the crown home.

“I am slightly nervous and I can feel the pressure of wanting to make everyone proud. My biggest fear of being around 86 beautiful girls is falling on stage and disappointing the country at the pageant,” she said.

The competition has already become contentious. Entrants from Sri Lanka, Northern Marianas, St Vincent and Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago have withdrawn due to lack of sponsorship.

They have been replaced with entrants from four other countries, Norway, Curaçao, Lebanon and Turkey.

After a two-year absence, Sweden will be represented at this year’s pageant.

During her month-long stay in the Bahamas, Keshwar will be dressed by some of South Africa’s best designers.

The likes of Malcolm Klûk CGDT, Katherine Kidger, Gerrit Pienaar, Kendril Vermeulen and Haroun Hansrot are designing outfits for the various events that Keshwar will attend before the pageant.

On her visit to the Rain Forest Theatre at the Wyndham Hotel, she will wear a design by South African RjKayn inspired by Zulu bridal dress.

On the night of the pageant, during which the beauties will be judged in swimwear and evening gowns , Keshwar will wear a JJ Schoeman cerise frilled dress decorated with Swarovski crystals.

Later, she will appear in a mint- green and silver gown by Charlene Sauerman.

“I am definitely spoilt for choice with all the different dresses that I will be taking with me to the island, and I love every single one of them,” she said.

Keshwar’s friends and family will attend the pageant in the Bahamas to support her.

Miss Namibia Happie Ntelamo might not participate at Miss Universe 2009

24 July 2009

Miss Namibia 2009, 20-year-old Happie Ntelamo, is still short of N$54 000 to make her dream come true at the 58th annual Miss Universe competition.

The glamorous event, featuring some of the world’s most beautiful women, for 2009 will be held at Atlantis paradise island resort in the Bahamas on August 23.

Though the Namibian private sector is helping, money is still short while her flight is already booked and wardrobe ready to be packed by next week Thursday. Happie will leave next Saturday.

Miss Namibia and her two princesses Tanya Schemmer and Susan van Zyl, as well as pageant organiser, Connie Maritz, yesterday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Nahas Angula. During the discussion it came to light that some money is still needed in order for her to partake in the event. Maritz is, however, hopeful that the amount will be raised in time for Happie to represent her country.

The Office of the Prime Minister, encouraging her to be brave and hopeful, made a contribution of N$5 000 towards Happie’s mission and wished her well in bringing the crown back home.

A fluent speaker in Spanish, Italian and English, 23-year-old Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela is the reigning Miss Universe.

Miss Philippines Universe is now ready for Miss Universe 2009

Pamela Bianca Manalo and Stella Marquez-Araneta

Pamela Bianca Manalo, Miss Philippines Universe 2009, is ready for the Miss Universe 2009 pageant in Bahamas. I got this article from Manila Bulletin. It was written by Robert Requintina.

Pamela Bianca Manalo left Wednesday night for the Bahamas where she will compete in the 2009 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant on August 23.

At the send-off party at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Manalo, 22, said she is ready and challenged to bring the title once again to the Philippines.

“I believe that if you really want something, you have to give it your 101 percent,’’ said the former flight attendant, who stands 5’10’’.

In preparing for the pageant, Manalo said she took language courses, reviewed Philippine history, geography, economics, and arts and culture, and brushed up on her knowledge about the Bahamas.

The beauty queen has also undergone on-cam training, like hosting and angles, plus hair and make-up lessons since she will have to do her own hair and make-up during the Miss Universe pageant.

Manalo is a sister of Miss World semifinalist Katherine Manalo-Hernandez.

Their aunt is former Miss Philippines International Nini Ramos Licaros.

She has been taking part in humanitarian missions to uplift the plight of poor Filipinos, and improving the morale of the country’s wounded soldiers.

She also finds time to take part in community-based projects. “I am very thankful that my family has always been blessed but I’m also concerned about the plight of the poor families in our community.”

“Before I joined Bb. Pilipinas, I’ve always been happy to volunteer for Gawad Kalinga in building houses for the poor, joining medical missions and participating in our community’s feeding programs,’’ Manalo said.

When she competed in the 2009 Bb. Pilipinas pageant, Manalo also won special awards such as the Manila Bulletin Reader’s Choice Award, Miss Natasha, Miss Philippine Airlines, and Best in Swimsuit.

Prior to the competition, Manalo stood out in cheerleading during high school and college. She also dabbled in modeling when she was 14 and also tried her hand at TV hosting. During her safety training as a flight attendant, she graduated first honorable mention among 75 cabin crew members.

If she wins the Miss Universe pageant, Manalo will be the third Filipina to win the title. The past winners were Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran.

Emiri Miyasaka's National Costume is a Disrespect to the Japanese

As expected many Japanese are disappointed with the national costume of Emiri Miyasaka, Miss Japan Universe 2009. Many think that the costume is a disrespect to the conservative Japanese style of clothing - the kimono.

We visited some forums and blogs and tried to read the comments. All are echoing that it is very slutty. Pageant experts are saying that the costume is good only in magazines but not in runways.

But there some also who admitted they love the costume. One of them is Miss Singapore Universe 2009 Rachel Kum who took notice of this issue by reading it in our blog. Though Rachel did not mention our blog in her website, she copied what we have written here.

Rachel said, "Japan is a huge fashion industry and I personally think it is great that their concept of a new age national costume is something different for a change! Emiri is beautiful and she can carry this look very well. I look forward to meeting her next week!"

Let's listen also to this Japanese woman who left a comment in our blog entry here.

"This crazy piece of fabric makes me suffocate. As a Japanese woman, it's just unbearable to expect that so many eyes all over the globe will see this expression of Ines Ligron's humongous ego and insanity under the name of "national costume of Japan"."

Now that it is generating a lot of publicity, do you think this will further boost the chance of Miss Japan to get the third crown for her country?

Have your say on this topic by leaving a comment.

Miss Japan Universe Emiri Miyasaka's Controversial National Costume

23 July 2009

When pictures of Miss Japan Universe 2009 Emiri Miyasaka in her national costume started to circulate in the internet, pageant fans all over the world have only one reaction - Emiri is like a porn star!

Many thought that the costume will kill her chances of making the cut. Obviously, fans including me are disappointed.

But there is one person who is happy about the reactions coming from the fans. This is what she wanted and what she wanted was generated. I am talking about Ines Ligron, the director for Miss Japan Universe.

In her blog, Ines said that the "national costume surely created a big PR buzz around the world."

She admitted that the reaction from fans was the "original concept of her team of designers and stylists". She added that "the plan worked as planned".

That's Ines who loves controversies. It is one of her ways to make her girl a subject of discussions. It is in this way where she can make her candidates so popular so that during the preliminaries of the Miss Universe, Japan will surely be noticed by the fans and the judges.

"The conservative and fashion-dinosaurs are critisizing her costume, meanwhile the fashionistas love it."

"I care only about the movers and shakers in the fashion industry. My vibe is of Junya Watanabe, Yoji Yamamto, Issey Miyake, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Cavalli and Dolce & Gabanna likes. They have created a new area in fashion and they mind works like mine."

"I love fierce versus safe, this is who I am and will always be. I want to bring the image of beauty queens to a level wich matches mine and not stuggle to remain safe and politically correct. I believe that traditional beauty queens are irrelevant in today world, and this is what most of people think and the real reason why TV ratings around the world are dropping and pageant houses have to close down their operations, instead they should reinvent themselves."

Ines also mentioned that Emiri will be flying to Miami, USA tomorrow to get ready for the pageant in Bahamas.

"Emiri is now packing with her team and will fly tomorrow afternoon to Miami where she has a few TV and magazines interviews. She will also prepare slowly her skin for the heat and dramatic sun of the Bahamas and will not burn. She will stay in Miami for a week and will fly by private helicopter to Nassau with her entourage. She will have a dinner at the Japanese Embassy with the Consul while in Miami."

Miss Philippines Lopena Maria Elena Salas Wins Miss Talent at Miss International Beauty

Miss Philippines - Manila Lopena Maria Elena Salas was proclaimed the winner of Miss Talent at the ongoing Miss International Beauty 2009 in China. The contest was held on July 21st in Mudanjiang City in China.

First Runner-up was Miss Puerto Rico - Ponce Pacheco Montanez Darli Arni. Second Runner-up was Miss China - Beijing Ye Ze Jin.

If you have visited the official website of the pageant, you will notice that some countries have two representatives. This is because two pageants were merged into one. Here is an explanation from Critical Beauty.

"A new pageant called "Miss International Beauty" is supposed to be taking place from July 5 to 28 in Urumqui, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China's most western province. Urumqui witnessed deadly protests last weekend caused by ethnic tensions between the Uyghurs, who are predominantly Muslim, and members of China's Han majority. On July 10th, the coordinator of the pageant, Alex Liu of ERM World, sent a note to all national directors informing them that the Miss International Beauty 2009 Contest will be moved to Daqing city in northern China. Another pageant, Miss Global Beauty Queen 2009 (also produced by ERM World), will be held from July 16 to August 2nd also in Daqing city. Liu informed the national directors that both pageants will be reorganized as one: "Two winners (Miss International Beauty 2009 and Miss Global Beauty Queen 2009) will be selected on the 1st August 2009 and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Runners ups will be the runner-ups of both contests."

Mr. Worcester missed Mr. England 2009 finals after a car accident

A Mr. England 2009 hopeful blew his chances of winning the title after he was figured out in a car collision while he was on his way to the Mr. England final.

Mr. Worcester,Gareth Woods, was half-an- hour into his journey when the car he was travelling in hit another vehicle on a country lane at about 11am on Monday.

The incident left the 21-year-old, of St John’s, with minor injuries but his friend driving the Volvo estate, Ross Donaldson, from Wales, was taken to hospital after being knocked unconscious when he hit his head on the steering wheel.

Mr Woods, a musician, said: “I was sat in the front passenger seat going over some questions and paperwork for the final and then I just saw a car come around the corner."

“It was one of those things where you can see what’s going to happen but you can’t prevent it.

“I had already braced myself so I was all right.”

Mr Woods said considerable damage was caused to the front of the car and one of his two other friends in the vehicle called for them to be picked up and taken back to Worcester.

It was from home that Mr Woods said he tried calling the Mr England organisers.

He said he was told to be there by 1.30pm but knew he would not be able to make it.

Numerous calls between fellow competitors and other organisers followed and it was at 4pm that he was told he could still compete if he made it to London by 6pm. But again, he said he would not have got there on time.

“I am gutted,” he said.

“I tried everything to get there. I feel as though I have let myself down but the circumstances didn’t permit me to go. It’s just my luck – nothing’s ever plain sailing.”

Mr Woods was hotly tipped to win the Mr England contest, which took place on Monday night alongside the Miss England final, and has now missed out on £5,000 worth of prizes.

New Brighton’s Miss England 2009 finalist attempts to break world record with velcro rollers

A Miss England 2009 finalist is attempting to break a world record using Velcro rollers.

Nadia Musa, from New Brighton, spent four hours on Friday night putting rollers in the hair of 200 women in order to get her name in the Guinness Book of Records.

The 22-year-old and her friend, Carly Eaton, worked from 6pm to 10pm at the New Brighton hair salon, Pure, as volunteers, friends and customers waited to have their hair done. The girls will find out if they have set a new record later this month.

Nadia said: “The idea behind this challenge was to raise lots of money for charity.

“We charged each of the woman £3 to get their hair done and all that money will now go to the National Autistic Society, the Variety Club, the children's charity and the eating disorder charity, B-eat.”

Soldier decorated for bravery in Iraq is Miss England 2009 First Runner-up

Miss England First Runner-up Katrina Hodges experienced hand-to-hand combat in Basra during a posting to Iraq, but still maintains her scariest ever moment was taking to the catwalk

She has dedicated her life so far to fighting for her country, but tonight, lance corporal Katrina Hodge has a very different goal. The squaddie is to swap her camouflage gear for a bikini to compete alongside 50 other girls for the title of Miss England.

The accidental beauty queen was entered into the local heats in her hometown of Tunbridge Wells by a friend, and was stunned when she took the crown, winning herself entry into the Miss England race.

But despite touring Iraq and engaging in hand-to-hand combat in Basra, the 22-year-old, who has been decorated for her bravery, claims that the most frightening thing she has ever done is to take to the catwalk.

Katrina was awarded a commendation from her unit, the 1st Batallion, Royal Anglian Regiment for her actions during a posting in 2005 in Basra.

'We arrested an Iraqi suspect we wanted to question and were taking him back to the prison when we were involved in a road accident,' she says.

'Our vehicle rolled over and when I came round the Iraqi had escaped and had our weapons. I knew I had to do something or he would have shot us all dead. It was a real do or die moment.'

'My training just kicked in and I managed to disarm him, get the weapons back and restrain him.

But incredibly though, while Katrina casually describes her efforts to save her peers in Basra as just part of the job, her reaction to her turn on the catwalk is far less understated, incredibly describing it as her most terrifying challenge yet.

'To be honest, the scariest moment of my life was stepping onto a catwalk for the first time,' she told the Daily Star. 'It was so far out of my comfort zone. I was terrified'

In a beauty pageant first, Katrina is hoping to impress the judges with her fitness and dexterity with a gun.

'For the talent section I'm doing rifle drill and throwing myself through an assault course. It's the first time anyone has ever done anything like this for Miss England but I wanted to show off my Army skills.'

'I'm really excited about the competition and fingers crossed, a miracle will happen and I'll win.'

And if she does win tonight, Katrina hopes she'll make a serious difference for the troops.

'It would be fantastic for the Army if I won Miss England,' she said. 'I think it would be a much-needed boost to the troops.

'It would also give me the chance to be able to encourage people to support the Forces. I really think British people need to be more patriotic and give more backing to the troops.

The Army made me who I am today and now I want to give something back. My main ambition if I won would be to promote the Forces and raise awareness of their charities.'

Aside from the support she might have earned for the troops, Katrina says she's pleased her achievements in the Miss England competition have given her the opportunity to show that Army girls can be feminine.

'People do think it's quite unusual for a soldier to be in a beauty pageant but I have had a really positive response, says Katrina.

A lot of people have got in contact with me as a result of entering Miss England because they've wanted to join the Army but they were too scared. They've thought it would be really butch and female-unfriendly.

But people have said I've inspired them to join up and that I've shown them how normal girly girls can succeed.

I think I'm showing that women in the Army can be pretty and girly but also that girls who enter beauty pageants don't have to be bimbos.

Some of the other Miss England girls are training to be lawyers and barristers. They're not dumb at all.'

Wardrobe Malfunction at Miss England 2009, Miss Leicestershire Exposes Boobs

Jade Elliott and the dress that malfunctioned

Even the world's best models have had to put their fair share of catwalk catastrophes behind them.

Naomi Campbell famously fell over on the runway in Paris and American supermodel Tyra Banks tripped up live on her own TV show.

Now a teenage beauty queen from Leicestershire has had to overcome a 'wardrobe malfunction' while competing in the Miss England 2009 pageant.

Stunning Jade Elliott, 18, from Desford, was strutting her stuff in London over the weekend after being crowned Miss Leicestershire in May.

The unfortunate incident happened on Sunday night, during the Fashion Student round.

Jade was given a bright pink dress to model, which had been designed by a student from Leeds, but she revealed more than she would have liked when the dress fell open.

The Mercury is not publishing the offending image to spare her blushes.

She had not noticed the wardrobe malfunction until she was greeted with a larger than normal round of applause and plenty of flashing lights as she came off stage.

She said: "That was the first time I had worn it and when I first put it on it was okay.

"As I was coming off I saw that quite a lot of people were clapping and all the photographers were taking pictures.

"I looked down and then realised what had happened. I've never been so embarrassed in my life.

"Nobody had said anything at all to me while I was on the catwalk. When I realised they had been taking pictures I was mortified.

"I just carried on as normal and pulled the top up."

Despite not making the top 15, the pretty brunette came away from the pageant with more coverage than any of the other contestants after the incident was reported – but she does not view that as a positive thing.

She said: "It's not the kind of attention that I want to be getting. I see it as quite negative.

"I've got absolutely no desire to do that kind of modelling so I don't see it as a good thing. It's just so embarrassing."

Jade says she would like to continue modeling but is having second thoughts about entering any more beauty pageants.

She says she will still have fond memories of the contest.

She said: "I enjoyed this so much. I had a great time and all the other girls were amazing.

"I was really pleased to get this far. Some of the other girls were quite a bit older than me and had been to lots of these things.

"But I'm not sure if this is the kind of thing I would do again."

Trivia and Scandals at Miss England 2009 involving the winner Rachel Christie

The new Miss England is not only a Miss World 2009 hopeful but also a 2012 Olympics hopeful for heptathlon and the 400 metres dash. At the 2009 Miss World, twenty-year-old Rachel Christie is no doubt will be the winner of the Miss Sports, one of the fast-track events of the pageant.

If we are right with this, then, Rachel will be one of the semi-finalists since winner of a fast-track event automatically advances to the Top 10 or 15.

Rachel, competing as Miss London, won the pageant at London's Metropole Hilton Hotel last Tuesday, July 21st. She also became the first black winner in the history of the pageant by beating 14 other finalists.

The beauty queen is the niece of British Olympic 100 metres gold medallist Linford Christie.

Linford Christie, who still holds the British 100 metres record at 9.87 seconds, won the gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He also won gold at the 1993 world championships and three European championships.

First Runner-up was Kat Hodge, a 21-year-old soldier decorated for bravery in Iraq. Viki Bailey was Second Runner-up.

Miss England Grand Final was decided after a public vote.

SCANDAL IN MISS ENGLAND 2009

Shortly after the announcement of Rachel Christie as Miss England 2009, it has been revealed that she only got 9 votes from the public. The pageant organizer had to come out to defend her.

According to the organizer, Christie was placed first by four of the six judges in the final and won the competition.

But in a public vote before the final, the winner of which won a place in the last 15, Miss Christie - who is also a part-time model - came 49th out of the 54 candidates.

People had been invited to take part in the survey conducted on the Miss England website, with calls costing £1 each on a premium rate phone line.

Fellow finalist Zoiey Smale got 2,013 votes compared to Miss Christie's nine but failed to finish in the top three.

She said: 'I felt quite let down as did all the girls that I spoke to because the ranking three didn't win any of the wards that were available for our hard work in the run-up to the finals.

'There were so many things we had to do. Yet none of it matter at the end of the day. The public vote was supposed to be acting as one of the judges' decisions. It was a big deal to me, but on the night it felt like it meant nothing.'

Organiser Angie Beasley said all the girls knew success in the public vote would only secure a place in the last 15 and counted as one-seventh of the final judging decision.

'When it gets to the top 15, they are judged on their confidence and their posture on stage and they are judged on their beauty and their personality,' she said.

'When it gets to the top 15 you cannot have the public vote judging that, it has to be a professional panel.'

Miss Christie also had a fast-track place because she had won the Helen E Cosmetic Award which guaranteed a spot in the final.

Half the finalists were fast-track contestants.

Current Miss World winner, Ksenia Sukhinova attended the pageant as a VIP guest.

Pamela Bianca Manalo's Send-off Party

Continuing with our coverage with Pamela Bianca Manalo's (Miss Philippines Universe 2009) send-off party the other day, we found out exclusive photos from OPMB site.

Bianca is no doubt one of the front-runners in Bahamas during the 2009 Miss Universe. These pictures are not photoshopped. They are candid and the beauty of Bianca is oozing.

How true was the rumour that she's off to Colombia for further training with Alfredo Barraza. Allegedly, Colombian Stella Marquez Araneta, owner of Binibining Pilipinas Organization, wanted Bianca to have her skin tanned. Beauty experts don't agree with this since Bianca is better with her normal skin colour. I just hope Binibining Pilipinas will listen to the fans.

Here are the pictures courtesy of OPMB and Noli Berioso

More on Pamela Bianca Manalo's transformation - Fierce!

Miss Philippines Universe 2009 Pamela Bianca Manalo is the most bashed delegate in this year's Miss Universe pageant. But look at her determination to rock Bahamas on August 23rd. She's proving her detractors she really can make it. That means she didn't deserved all the nasty things thrown at her.

The Filipina beauty queen definitely made her homework. All fans who have been supporting this girl are so happy now with the transformation she had.  The changes were all seen from her new pictures that were  released by Binibining Pilipinas Organization - pictures that kept her basher so silent as of  now.

She is every inch stunning in her latest photos. I must say Bianca definitely won my heart. Now, I am predicting she'll gonna make the cut IF politics won't get in the way.

Third Miss Universe crown of the Philippines is highly possible this year.

Maybe the ambiance of 1969 will be relived in 2009. Years ending in 9 are lucky years for the Philippines. Have you observed this?

Philippines got their first Miss Universe crown in 1969 through Gloria Diaz. In 1979, the Philippines got their third Miss International crown (thought not at Miss Universe) through Mimilanie "Melanie"Marquez. Also in 1999, Miriam Quiambao almost ran away with their third Miss U crown when she settled for the First Runner-up.

But don't expect too much since there are tons of equally deserving candidates just like Bianca.

Time to post the pictures. Here they are.

Mrs. Middle East Armaiti Shahidi-Fitzgerald Wins Mrs International 2009

Armaiti Shahidi-Fitzgerald beat 48 lovely married women to be crowned Mrs. International 2009 last Saturday night, July 18th, at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Illinois.

Technically, only 4 countries and one territory around the world were presented in the pageant. There was one representative each from Canada, Turkey and the Philippines. One contestant was from Guam. But these married women are also American citizens who just carried the flags of the said three countries.

Aside from the countries previously mentioned, there were also representatives coming from regions of the world and the US. In fact, the winner wore the sash of Mrs. Middle East. Another three contestants wore the sashes of Mrs. Southeast (US), Mrs. Southern (US) and Mrs. Midwest (US).

The rest of the Mrs were from the different states of the US.

First Runner-up was Mrs. Illinois Kristin Melton, Second Runner-up was Mrs. Texas Bonie Hubert, Third Runner-up was Mrs. Southeast Karen Bartosh and Fourth Runner-up was Mrs. Midwest Randa Allen.

The international pageant showcases the accomplishments of married women, and includes women from around the world.

Half of the score is based on the interview with a panel of judges, and the balance of the score is the on-stage interview in evening gowns, and physical fitness.

It is the ability to balance family, career, community service, and still maintain good health and stay fit, that sets this pageant apart from the stereotypical beauty pageants.

In the Mrs. International pageant the husbands participate in the event by escorting their wives on stage.

National Costumes and Long Gown at the Miss Universe 2009

20 July 2009

The official head shot of Miss Philippines Universe 2009, Pamela Bianca Manalo

Miss Universe candidates from all over the world start arriving in Bahamas one week from now. We have visited different websites and forums and collected some interesting information on some of the lovely candidates. Here they are:

1. Miss Japan Emiri Miyasaka will be the first Japanese delegate to speak English if she can pass through the finals or Top 5. According to her national director, Ines Ligron, Emiri is the most prepared Miss Japan since she started handling the Japanese girls to the pageant.

2. Mayra Matos of Puerto Rico will be wearing a boxer-inspired suit for her national costume. Some argue that she should not win the Best in National Costume award since boxing is not a native of Puerto Rico. They say Puerto Rico can't claim the boxing outfit exclusively. See the pictures below for reference.

3. Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo is no longer dressed by Alfredo Barraza who, for almost a decade, trained the Philippine representatives with no success. Pamela is being trained by a Philippine top model, Wilma Doesnt, with her catwalk skills. Her sister, Miss World 2002 finalist Katherine Ann Manalo is training her how to do well at the question and answer part of the pageant.

It is also rumoured that Pamela will be wearing a Filipiniana terno for her national costume and it is said that the dress was designed by Pitoy Moreno. According to some, Pamela personally chose the dresses she will be wearing in Bahamas.

Will she be wearing a gown made by Monique Lhuillier? What's the truth on this?

4. Miss Singapore Rachel Kum will be wearing a national costume that will be decided by the people via public voting. Six costumes were presented online for voting and the one with the highest vote will be her costume in the pageant.

5. Miss Jamaica Carolyn Yapp is said to be the latest favourite of the Miss Universe Organization. Apparently, the people behind the Miss universe pageant are so impressed with her beauty. If this is true, expect her at the Top 15.

6. Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar's national costume is very similar to a Vietnamese traditional dress. Her costume is kinda good but the gown is not stunning. See pictures below for reference.

7. Miss Vietnam Vo Hoang Yen is definitely one of the most hyped delegates this year together with Miss Japan Emiri Miyasaka. At first we love to see the "photo-chopped" pictures of Vo Hoang Yen but upon seeing more of her candid shots, we are predicting that she will end up not making the cut.

Though Vo Hoang Yen has a good catwalk skill, we doubt if she can score high in the long gown and preliminary interview. Never had a Miss Vietnam wore a stunning gown in any international pageants. We doubt also if she can do well in the interview. But we hope we are wrong since we love to see Asian winning the crown again.

Miss World 2008 Ksenia Sukhinova Detained in Wales as Terrorist

Ksenia Sukhinova, Miss World 2008 from Russia, was held and detained by British customs officers when she arrived in Cardiff, Wales to be a VIP guest at the Mr. and Ms. Wales 2009 pageant last July 19th.

Ksenia was stopped and searched by the officers who were searching for terrorists. She was demanded to show the content of her bag.

In a report, the Russian beauty queen said she remained calm while she was being searched for an hour.

The 24-year-old Russian stunner said, "I flew in on Thursday. I was at customs. I don’t know why it happened, it was the first time."

“I don’t know why they looked in all my luggage, it was a check."

“They looked in each of my bags and things to see what I had taken with me and what I had in my luggage. I think they enjoyed it!"

“But it was fine, it was security. The reason was they were looking for dangerous things – but I just had long dresses. I just said nothing. It was just their job.”

Ksenia didn’t even reveal to the officers she was the reigning Miss World. “I didn’t say that,” she said. “I just stayed there. I’m a good girl. It took, like, an hour.”

19 July 2009

A beauty queen representing Spain's province of A Coruña won the title of Miss Spain 2009 last July 19th outside of the country.

Twenty-three year-old Estíbaliz Pereira Rabado was crowned in Cancun, Mexico where the pageant was held for the first time in the history of Miss Spain. As Miss Spain Universe 2009, she will be going to Bahamas to represent her country at the 58th edition of the Miss Universe pageant.

Rabado is a model and also a student of Fashion Designs. She stands 1.81 meters.

The First Runner-up was Carmen Laura García Fernández of Granada. She will represent Spain at Miss Europe 2009 which is said to be staged in Lebanon.

Why? Is Lebanon a part of Europe? I don't think so.

The Second Runner-up was Alejandra Echeverría Pedraza of Jaen and she will be representing her country at the 2009 Miss International pageant to be held in China and Japan.

Completing the Top 6 were the contestants from Sevilla, Málaga and Córdoba.

Ma. Isabel Lopez Has Forgiven Myrna Sese Panlilio

18 July 2009

Now that Miss Philippines Universe 1964 Myrna Sese Panlilio died of cardiac arrest the other day, the incident involving her fellow Miss Philippines Universe (Binibining Pilipinas) alumna, Ma. Isabel Lopez, at the last edition of Binibining Pilipinas is once again a hot discussion.

Ma. Isabel, who represented Philippines at the Miss Universe 1982, lashed out at the beauty contest organizer last March 2009 when she received mistreatment from them. It was reported that Ma. Isabel was forced to leave the pageant for attending it without an invitation. And who did it?

It was Myrna Panlilio who told her to leave the venue and who apparently called the security guards to escort her to the exit door. The reason why Ma. Isabel was barred was apparently because of her sexy image during the 1980's.

But with the death of Myrna, Ma. Isabel said in an interview that she had already forgiven the dead beauty queen.

Speaking sadly, Ma. Isabel said that "she respected and understood what she had to do at that time".

"I pray for her soul. I am sure she's happy now with the Lord."

Miss Philippines 1964, Myrna Sese Panlilio, Dies of Cardiac Arrest

Another Philippine representative to the Miss Universe died after Miss Philippines Universe 1980 Rosario "Chat" Silayan died of colon cancer on April 23, 2006.

Myrna Sese Panlilio Borromeo who represented Philippines at the 1964 Miss Universe in Miami Beach, Florida died of a cardiac arrest last July 16th at the Makati Medical Centre at around 2 o'clock in the morning.

Myrna is the first ever Binibining Pilipinas Universe winner but she is not the first Philippine representative to the Miss Universe pageant. Teresita Sanchez first represented the Philippines at the first edition of Miss Universe in 1952.

When Stella Marquez Araneta, first ever Miss International winner from Colombia, got the franchise of Miss Universe and started Binibining Pilipinas to select the Philippine representative to Misses Universe and International, Myrna was the first winner in 1964.

At the 1964 Miss Universe, Myrna did not make to the quarter-finals. The winner that year was Corinna Tsopie of Greece.

Some reports are also saying that Myrna died of gall bladder disease. So some are still confused on the cause of her death.

Myrna had a young daughter named Patricia Borromeo who died of cancer last 2003.

Who has the Best Headshot Among the candidates of Miss Universe 2009?

16 July 2009

Click on the picture for larger viewing.

I've been talking about Miss Earth new website yesterday and surprisingly, Miss Universe also updated theirs by uploading the headshots of each candidates to the 2009 Miss Universe in Bahamas. So, who do you think has the Best Headshot?

But I noticed some honest mistakes which include:

1. Miss Singapore Rachel Kum has the picture of Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo.

2. Miss Philippines named has been mispelled. Instead of PAMELA Bianca Manalo, what was written is PANELA Bianca Manalo.

Most of the ladies are beautiful in pictures. Most of them are photogenic. The question is, will there be a Miss Photogenic award this year after it was skipped last year?

Miss Indonesia Zivanna Letisha Sirigar is stunning in her headshot. She's a revelation. And I also noticed her big facial similarity with Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo.

Miss Korea Na Ri is not really that bad. She looks so sensual and sophisticated in the picture.

Miss Netherlands Avalon Chanel Weyzig is like a goddess. I love her almond-like skin colour.

Miss Paraguay Mareike Baumgarten Oroa's headshot should be changed. She doesn't look good in her picture. While most of the candidates have photoshopped pictures, Mareike's picture was not.

Miss Egypt Elham Wagdi is absolutely stunning.

These are only few of my comments. I try to post more next time.

Fickle beauty pageant winner loses her crown

The winner, then not: Newly-crowned Miss Malaysia Model of the World 2009 Wong waving to the crowd after she was announced as the winner in Ipoh on Sunday night. However, she later decided to give up her title.

A fickle beauty queen who gave up her title for “health reasons” found out the hard way that there’s no going back. When she changed her mind and decided to keep the crown, the event organiser told her that she had lost it for good.

Fashion designer Melissa Wong had beaten 25 other girls to be crowned Miss Malaysia Model of the World 2009 on Sunday night.

Then, the 22-year-old shocked everyone by deciding to give up her title and the chance to represent Malaysia in the 21st Miss Model of the World in China from Nov 2 to 23.

Wong requested to swap titles with first runner-up Madelyne Nandu from Sabah. The organisers agreed.

During a press conference to announce the swap at 10am yesterday, Wong again caused a stir by saying she had changed her mind once more, and wished to remain the winner and go to China.

She believed she was strong enough to make the trip.

The shocked organisers had to stop the press conference to consult with her.

Later, when the press conference resumed, Wong said she had undergone spinal surgery several years ago and had initially thought she would not be able to withstand the cold weather in China.

“I thought that I had been well but then my spine has started to hurt again in recent days,” she said when grilled by reporters on why she had not thought of it before joining the contest.

Despite her assurances, the organisers put their foot down and declared Nandu the winner and Wong as the first runner-up.

Choong May Teng, director of contest producer Star Avenue Production, said everyone had stayed up till 4am to settle the matter.

“She must be fair to everyone,” said Choong.

Choong said Wong had not been totally honest with officials from the start, and that they could have stripped her of the title instead of letting her be the first runner-up.

Model Eleen Yong, 22, from Malacca was second runner-up in the contest, which was presented by Marigold HL Milk.

"Miss Earth Tots Botswana 2008 buried after mysterious death", a headline says

Miss Botswana Earth 2008 died in a mysterious illness.

That's what I thought when I first read the headline of a breaking news from a website in Botswana.

The title says, "Miss Earth Tots Botswana 2008 buried after mysterious death"

Then I continued reading the lead or the first paragraph.

"Eleven-year-old Katlo One Lore, who was crowned Ms. Earth Botswana in 2008, was buried last week Saturday, 27th June, 2008 at her home place, Kanye, following a mysterious illness."

I started to doubt the authenticity of the write up written by Gowenius Toka when I read the girl was only 11 years old. How can she be so young to compete at Miss Earth 2008?

Then I realized there was a serious error in the reporting when I verified that Botswana was represented at the 2008 Miss Earth in Manila by a 19 year-old named Nametso Ngwako.

I hope you weren't fooled too just what exactly happened to me.

*****The first picture is the real Miss Botswana Earth 2008 Nametso Ngwako. The second picture is the girl, Katlo One Lore, who died with a mysterious illness.

Miss Earth Gets a new crown?

Miss Earth 2008 Karla Paula Henry of the Philippines with the new Ramona Haar-made crown

Miss Earth's official website has a new look. You gonna love it. It has a new domain name also - from www.missearth.tv to www.missearth.info.

I was looking for updates about this pageant when I discovered this. But there is one thing that I'm curious about. Miss Earth will reveal its new crown soon.

The teaser goes like this, "Over 80 gems from all over the world on one coveted headpiece - The NEW Miss Earth crown, Unveiling soon"

We all knew that the crown lying on the head of Karla Paula Henry, the current Miss Earth, is new as it was only introduced in November during the latest edition of the pageant. It was designed by Ramona Haar Fine Jewelry and its value is US$25,000.

The new crown is still a masterpiece of Ramona Haar.

Krystal Brown is the new Miss Bahamas Earth 2009

When the original winner of Miss Bahamas Earth, Ife Bethel Sears, gave up her crown to continue her study, reports circulated in forums and blogs that Amanda Appleyard, Miss Bahamas International, was taking her place. Truth is ... Amanda retained her title.

A new girl was named  Miss Bahamas Earth. The lucky lady is Krystal (or Krystle?) Brown. She is indeed very lucky if you pay attention to the clamor of many Bahamians who are disappointed with the turn of events.

Pageant enthusiasts from Bahamas are questioning why a non-finalist like Krystal would get the right to compete in a better pageant like Miss Earth and the First Runner-up, who happens to be Amanda, is going only to Miss International which is far inferior than the former.

Amanda was elevated as First Runner-up from being Second Runner-up when Ife (original First Runner-up) resigned. On the other hand, Krystal was appointed as the Second Runner-up.

Some are also arguing why the fourth and fifth runners-up of the pageant, Alyssa Knowles and Camille Kenny, were not offered with the title vacated by Ife.

Fans also argued that Miss Bahamas Organization should stick to their tradition of sending the First Runner-up to Miss Earth and the Second Runner-up to Miss International.

Supporters of Miss Bahamas Org reasoned out that Amanda already signed a contract designating her as the representative of Bahamas to Miss International, therefore, they can no longer give her the title of Miss Bahamas Earth.

Going back on Ife Bethel Sears, someone fed us some information that the beauty queen just used her studies as her reason to quit her title. According to our informer, the real reason was because Ife believed her contract with Miss Bahamas Organization was bogus. The former Miss Bahamas Earth 2009 was not happy with the stipulations in her contract.

This would only remind us the issues involving Gaynell Stubbs-Rolle, Miss Bahamas organizer, and former winners of the pageant like Sacha Scott.

Rachael Finch will be in the Top 15 of Miss Universe 2009

15 July 2009

Rachael Finch, Miss Australia Universe 2009, in a swimsuit during her national pageant.

We would love to make our Top 15 prediction for the Miss Universe 2009 but it's too early. We'll do it later but as early as now we are sure Miss Australia Rachael Finch will be one of them.

Why are we so sure? It's because Donald Trump, the owner of the pageant, is really trying so hard to win the Australians. He wanted Miss Universe to be hosted by Australia for the second time.

In fact, he offered the hosting of Miss Universe 2009 to some cities in Australia but he was refused because they weren't interested. Now, he wanted to bring the pageant closer to the Aussies.

Donald is determined to get the Aussies' attention. Read this article from news.com.au. Donald is full of praise for Rachael and Jennifer Hawkins, Miss Universe 2004, is one of his all-time favourite Miss Universe.

Just to add, I remember reading a book authored by Donald Trump that his most favourite Miss Universe is Amelia Vega of Dominican Republic who won the pageant in 2003 in Panama. I forgot the title of that mini-book but I report this when I find it out.

Here's the news.

Miss Universe 2004, Jennifer Hawkins

MISS Universe pageant co-owner Donald Trump is full of praise for Australia's Rachael Finch as she tries to follow in the footsteps of one of his all-time favourite winners, Jennifer Hawkins.

The tycoon said he had heard only good things about the current Miss Universe Australia and had been informed the Queenslander was "wonderful".

"I've heard Rachael is beautiful and I hear she's a lovely lady," Trump said.

The glamorous 21-year-old from Townsville will travel to the Bahamas next month in the hope of clinching the crown, won by Hawkins five years ago.

Trump, who also owns the Miss USA competition, said Hawkins was one of his favourites because she was so problem-free, unlike many others.

"Jennifer Hawkins is one of my all-time favourite Miss Universes," Trump said.

"She's phenomenal. She's a great person and just absolutely beautiful.

"She was absolutely great, she was so problem-free."

Trump's pageants have been riddled with controversy recently.

Miss Universe Australia finalist Stephanie Naumoska made international headlines for her skeletal-like frame. "

I think she was too thin, but I hope she's better,'' Trump said.

In the Miss USA competition, the most recent Miss California was dethroned after missed appearances, topless photos and homophobic comments.

But Trump admitted controversy can be positive too.

"Frankly the controversy is a good thing, not a bad thing, because everyone's talking about my pageants," Trump said.

Walcott: It’s too late for Miss Universe

If asked to Gabrielle Walcott will not represent Trinidad and Tobago (TT) in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant which takes place in the Bahamas next month.

There is just not enough time for either her or any other woman to prepare for the internationally popular beauty competition, said Walcott, the third-placed winner in the Miss World 2008 pageant.

“I understand girls have to be there in the Bahamas in the next two weeks. I would never do myself or our country that injustice or disservice. How could I be prepared in just two weeks?” Walcott told Newsday.

Several broadcast media reports over the past two days claimed Walcott was expected to be approached by the Government to represent this country at the pageant. TT has had two winners at Miss Universe, Janelle Penny Commissiong in 1977 and Wendy Fitzwilliam in 1998, along with a string of semifinalists in recent years. Giselle La Ronde won Miss World in 2006, and again, this country has had successful runner-ups in this competition.

In 2008, Anya Ayoung-Chee represented the country in the Miss Universe in Vietnam, while Walcott went to South Africa for the Miss World competition. Ayong-Chee did not place among the semifinalists but Walcott placed third, and even won the Queen of the Caribbean prize.

Walcott denied the media reports and said no one from the Government had approached her to be a possible delegate to send to Bahamas. Even so, Walcott said it would be too late for her to get ready to compete.

“I think it’s just too late to be properly prepared. Our girls have done well at that competition before and I don’t want to be one to spoil that record.”

Former pageant trainer Allyson Brown, who has previously helped past delegates to both beauty competitions, was also in the dark about Walcott or any other woman being selected for Bahamas.

“I did not hear anything. I have absolutely no information whatever on that,” said Brown.

According to Miss Universe Inc, 86 countries have already confirmed their attendance with this country listed as a withdrawal along with Antigua & Barbuda and Sri Lanka.

That this country would be without a delegate at Miss Universe and possibly Miss World 2009, stemmed from the previous struggles of former franchise holder Peter Elias to obtain consistent support from the Government and the business community. In 2007, TT did not take part in Miss Universe because of lack of funding, and afterward Government stepped in and supported Valene Maharaj’s entry to Miss World 2007 where she placed third.

Elias could not be reached for comment yesterday. However, after Walcott’s success at Miss World last year, Elias stated that he was giving up the franchise for both competitions.

14 July 2009

Miss International Beauty 2009 is moving to Daqing city in northern China from Urumqui, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China's most western province after riots between Chinese Muslims and Christians broke out in the streets.

According to Ian Williams of NBC, the contestants didn't appear to know Urumqi is a riot-torn city. He witnessed a parade in the street of the contestants in their finest and minimalist evening wear.

How's Miss Universe 1997 Brook Mahealani Lee now?

13 July 2009

Here's an article I took from the net on Miss Universe 1997, Brook Mahealani Lee,

A Kamehameha Schools alum became Hawaii's first and only Miss Universe more than a decade ago. Brook Mahealani Lee won the coveted crown in Miami, but what has she been up to since then?

Twelve years ago, Lee made pageant history. She was the seventh Miss USA to become Miss Universe, but the first from Hawaii and the only native Hawaiian ever to win the title.

She was witty and quick on her feet in answering the final question: If there were no rules in your life for one day, and you could be really outrageous, what would you do?

"I would eat everything in the world," she answered in front of a live audience. "I would eat everything twice."

That answer made her the one to beat.

"But I was like there's no way I was going to win with that answer," Lee said. "And when I won, my jaw, the picture, my jaw just dropping to the floor."

Her family and friends showered her with aloha at her homecoming in June 1997.

"It's good to be here," she said right after her victory. "Everyone come out to the parade tomorrow. Let's all eat Spam musubis together."

More than a decade after her win, Lee still meet people who remember that moment.

"Now everywhere I go, people serve me two things," she said. "I got on planes all year long. Flight attendants were like, ‘You eat everything twice. Here's two!"

The year after her win, she helped bring the Miss Universe pageant to Hawaii, which pumped tens of millions of dollars into our local economy.

"I was just thinking it would be good to give back to Hawaii and help them market themselves to an entire world that had been my host for an entire year," said Lee. "It's like bringing them home, bringing the world home back to Hawaii for me and showing them where it is I came from."

These days, Lee wears many hats: actress, hostess, wife and mother to 2-year-old Fynnegan. She's also been told she moonlights as the Hawaiian Airlines logo.

"Brook, if you could help us either confirm or deny a rumor. Are you the face of Hawaiian Airlines?" asked KHNL.

"See, that has a legal concern," said Lee. "Let's have the viewers vote, shall we? Is this it? Hmm? All you need is the flower. I like to think I inspire, maybe a couple of free tickets? I don't know."

Lee encourages kids from Hawaii to follow their dreams and see the world.

"So it's good to get the perspective and to be able to appreciate even more the trade winds, and the people and waving to each other, simple things," said Lee. "Getting on the freeway, people waving to each other. It's so important: kindness, appreciation. A smile makes the world go around."

Lee is in town for her 20th high school class reunion at Kamehameha Schools and Punahou.

She will appear on KHNL News 8 Today, bright and early Friday morning with Dash and Di.

It's that time of the year when schools welcome back their graduates. Kamehameha schools celebrate alumni week with some good old competition.

It's "Iron Chef" meets ho'olaule'a. Each class creates a signature dish to share, then the alumni vote on who has the most ono creation in the spirit of friendly competition, but it's the people that keep them coming back every year.

"Every five years, we're able to come back to this campus and be a part of reuniting with our classmates and other classes that we know of," said Toni Lee, Kamehameha Schools Class of '59 alumnae. "It puts us in a really wonderful sense of being for us."

"It is a very special place that has produced a lot of very special people so to get everybody together, we all feel the same way," said Andrew Lai, Kamehameha Schools Class of '89 alumnus. "We all bleed blue and white and it's a real special thing. So it's great. It's a fun week."

3 countries back out from Miss Universe 2009

Eighty-five representatives from countries around the world are expected to take part at the 58th edition of Miss Universe to be held in Bahamas.

82 contestants have already been selected and 3 countries have yet to select their representatives. Miss Spain 2009 will be named on July 18th, Miss Honduras on Jluy 25th and Jamaica on July 26th.

If things won't work out for Miss Namibia Happie Ntelamo, she might withdraw from the pageant.

Ntelamo has not yet found a sponsor who is willing to send her to Bahamas. Due to the ongoing economic crisis, the organizers are having hard time raising the funds to be needed.

Ntelamo herself is spearheading the campaign to raise money for the pageant, with one of the events being a gala dinner scheduled for July 25, to which companies and individuals are being asked to book tables to fund the trip.

There is also a rumour that Honduras might skip the pageant this year due to the political tensions that are  taking place in this Central American country.

On the other hand, Jamaica is sending their last representative this year and the organizers have already announced that they will not be sending representatives on the next few years because of lack of sponsorships.

In another development, Northern Marianas already backed out from Miss Universe 2009 because of the crisis. Sorene Maratita was supposed to compete in Bahamas but she was advised by her organizers that she will only be competing at the Miss International 2009 pageant in Japan and China.

Sri Lanka and Trinidad and Tabago had already begged off earlier.

Is Miss Singapore Rachel Kum about to succumb to pressure?

12 July 2009

There have been calls to strip Miss Singapore 2009, Rachel Kum, of her title after some racy or scandalous pictures of her appeared in this blog, Beauty in Pageants. The photos were picked up by beauty pageant related forums and other blogs until it reached the organizers of Miss Singapore.

But the organizers said they are not stripping Rachel of her crown since the pictures were all taken before her crowning. She will still be going to Bahamas for the Miss Universe 2009.

Asiaone.com also run a story on these photos. Though the website did not name our blog, it was pretty obvious the writer was talking about this blog and the pictures we first uploaded here. They actually copied some of the comments made under the blog entries we wrote on Rachel Kum's suggestive pictures.

There is one I discovered from reading all the news articles on this so-called brouhaha, I came to realize that people are not aware that these pictures we published here came from the blog of Rachel Kum, herself. Yes, it's just like the beauty queen was also the one who fed us these pictures in question - innocently.

Did you know that?

But when I checked back Rachel's blog, her site was temporarily unavailable. She mentions that the site is going to be revamped soon.

Another source told me that at one point, Rachel set her blog privately. One can read it by invitation only. Probably she did it while she was deleting the pictures.

The question is, is Rachel about to succumb to pressure?

I have seen online petitions calling her to step down or give up her title. More and more people are signing.

We did not expect that these stories we ran in this blog would generate such controversy. One thing is achieved here - Rachel is now one of the most talked candidates to the Miss Universe 2009.

So don't be surprised if we see her on the Top 15 come August 23rd.

***Rachel posted the picture shown above in her blog. It was taken in Maldives.

Makeover of Miss Philippines Universe 2009 Pamela Bianca Manalo

Philippines is no doubt the most hated country in world pageantry. You'll gonna agree with me if you just take some time to browse pageant-related forums and read the messages from rabid fans. Constant name callings are directed to Philippine representatives every year. These so-called "bashers" claim the reason why they love to attack Philippine representatives is because of some Filipino fans who love to hype their candidates. What I observed, they hate others hyping a candidate but they do hype their own representatives and get angry when they're accused of doing so.

Pamela Bianca Manalo, Miss Philippines Universe 2009, is no exemption. The moment she got the crown in March, she already started getting flak from disappointed fans.

At first, I didn't like Bianca also because I believe there were more deserving candidates for the crown. But with the new glamour shots and some fresh videos of her spreading on the net lately, I started to rethink to put her in my list of my own Top 15.

Why not? Of all those confirmed beauty queens to the Miss Universe 2009 in Bahamas, I can say that Bianca is the girl who improved the most. She may not be the best girl in this batch so far but her make-over was tremendous. It can't be denied.

Take a look at these photos and tell me if you agree or not.

Miss Spain sets new trend in pageantry

Spain is setting a trend in beauty pageantry.

Miss Spain is for the first time being held outside of Spain. The 52 Spanish beauties representing the 52 provinces of Spain are in Cancun, Mexico doing all the pre-pageant activities before the final night on July 18th at the Hotel Oasis.

The winner of Miss Spain 2009 will go directly to Bahamas to compete at the Miss Universe 2009.

Patricia Rodriguez, Miss Spain 2008, told the ladies to enjoy their stay in Mexico. She also added that her reign had been marvelous and her title had enabled her to travel, become a more rounded person and make a lot of important contacts.

What is the reason why Miss Spain is not taking place in its home country?

Andrés Cid, the president of the competition, said that the worldwide economic situation had made them move the frontiers and added that it was highly likely that future editions of the competition would be held in other world destinations.

Mexican ambassador to Spain was delighted that his country had been chosen to host the competition and hoped that it would 'reinforce the historical, cultural and linguistic links that the two countries share.' He was confident that the Mexican people would welcome the contest with 'characteristic warmth' and that his country would provide an idyllic backdrop for the contest.

The ambassador said was pleased that his country had the opportunity "to promote as a tourist destination on the worldwide stage", especially in view of recent events (referring to the recent swine flu epidemic).

It was reported that one contestant fainted during one of the activities because of the hot temperature in Cancun. It was also reported that Dominican Republic was first considered as the host country.

Russian beauty to take part in Miss Universe pageant despite porn scandal

At the Miss Universe 2009 beauty pageant Russia is going to be represented by 18-year-old Sophia Rudyeva, in spite of her involvement in a child porn scandal.

Rudyeva won the Miss Russia pageant in March. But soon after she was crowned Russia’s most beautiful woman, an old erotic photo session featuring her appeared on the Internet.

The situation was especially controversial as at the time of the photo shooting, made for an international adult magazine, Rudyeva was only 15 years old, although she already possessed an enviable figure.

Organizers of the beauty pageant questioned the appropriateness of Sophia’s participation in the world beauty contest, saying that millions of girls worldwide look up to beauty pageant winners, and you can’t expect a child porn star to set a positive example.

Rudyeva responded to the debates in the media in an open letter, in which she apologized to everyone she had upset. She blamed dishonest managers and photographers for tricking her into the illegal photo shooting, and vowed that if she wins the Miss Universe title she will use her influence to prevent young and silly girl models from repeating her mistakes.

Controversy notwithstanding, Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported Thursday that Rudyeva is going to the Bahamas in August to represent Russia at the Miss Universe contest.

“I am now getting ready for the contest,” she told the newspaper.

“I’ve been taking part in charity activities, took yoga, fitness and singing classes. I became the face of three world-famous brands, such as Philip Plein. I am very confident of myself.”

Demetra Olimpiou Wins Star Cyprus 2009

Cyprus crowned its representatives to Misses Universe and World with the conclusion of Miss Cyprus 2009, also known as Star Cyprus or Carlsberg Pancyprian Beauty Contest, last 2 July 2009 at the Pavillion in the capital Nicosia, once a host of the Miss Universe 2000.

The top prizes in this pageant are Star Cyprus 2009 and Miss Cyprus 2009. Confusing? The former is superior to the latter. The winner of Star Cyprus goes to Miss Universe while Miss Cyprus goes to Miss World.

Star Cyprus 2009 was given to Demetra Olimpiou. She will represent her country at the Miss Universe 2010. Demetra is now the third confirmed representative to the 59th edition of Miss Universe after Turkey and Bolivia. (I have written in this blog entry that Lebanon's Martine Androus was the third one but a switching made her the representative of her country in this year's pageant in the Bahamas.)

The winner of Star Cyprus 2008, Klelia Giasemidou will be the one competing at the Miss Universe 2009 pageant in the Bahamas this coming August 23.
