Image Award in Miss International 2008?

I came across with this news article talking about an online voting intended to select the recipient of the "Image Award" of the ongoing Miss International 2008. The site is mentioned in the article and when I clicked it, it's written in Chinese or Japanese. There is a question that formulated in my mind and that is the credibility of the award and the poll. Is this legit? If this is really a poll run by the pageant then why is this not in their own website?

I tried investigating about this award and the poll but I never had a positive  result. I immediately discounted this as for real but I can't totally just ignore this. The mere fact that this is published by a newspaper online makes this appear to be true.

Well, I just decided to post this here in my blog and if someone of you would like to share their ideas, you're very much welcome.

Vietnamese beauty Cao Thuy Duong, who is among 67 contestants competing at the 2008 Miss International Pageant in Japan, is now leading in an online vote for the pageant’s International Image Award.

According to the website www.geocities.jp/intlbeautypageant/vote.html, as of 3pm yesterday, Duong has 4,288 votes, 41 per cent of the total, while Miss Columbia is in second place with 1,320 votes and Miss Zambia is in third place with 1,167 votes. The voting, now in the semi-final round, runs through November 1. The top 15 finalists, which will be announced on Sunday, will re-enter the competition on equal ground for the final round of voting.

Together with other Miss International contestants, Duong was present at a pageant function held in Kyoto last Saturday

Wearing an innovative ao dai (traditional dress) by designer David Minh Duc, Duong said, "Hello everyone. My name is Cao Thuy Duong. I’m proud to come from Viet Nam — a peaceful country, which also loves peace. I do hope all of you will visit my country to experience the friendliness of the Vietnamese people as well as our natural landscape.

Miss Amazing Philippines 2008 Winner

28 October 2008

In my entry here, I mentioned about the unusual beauty pageant among transsexuals and transvestites. Just last week, the winner was already crowned.

Angelika Santillan, 27, won the title of the most beautiful contestant from 25 other ‘women.’ Santillan stole her crown from her major rival, Rosa Garcia, 19, who came in as the first runner-up. Rianne Barrameda, the 2007 winner of the contest, awarded the crown to the most beautiful and amazing beauty in the Philippines.

Angelika was supposed to fly to Thailand on October 26, where so-called lady-boys are categorized as a separate sex, to represent her country at the international pageant Miss International Queen 2008. However, the visit was later delayed indefinitely due to ongoing riots in the country.

Miss International Queen is traditionally held in Pattaya, a popular tourist destination in Thailand . Transsexual individuals from dozens of countries in Asia, Europe and America participate in the pageant.

The beauty queens of such competitions receive smaller prizes in comparison with the winners of Miss World or Miss Universe pageants. They only receive a diamond-encrusted tiara (which they pass over to other winners every year) and a $10,000 bonus.

The contestants’ spending may often exceed the amount of the reward. Every contestant must present a national costume, a bathing suit, an evening outfit, a self-made costume, a strict black dress and underwear. The price of one stage dress only may often reach 30,000 or even 40,000 dollars.

As a rule, Miss International Queen is a pageant for Asian lady-boys, although transsexuals from Europe , the United States and Latin America come to Pattaya to participate in the event too.

Miss Bhutan in Her Swimsuit

27 October 2008

In the picture is the first Miss Bhutan ever to compete in an international pageant. This is another history for the Miss Earth contest which is gaining more popularity as years pass by. It is nice to see the lady is enjoying her competition and I just wish this photo I have borrowed from Inquirer.net showing Miss Bhutan in swimsuit will not make issues back in her country. Like Tibet and Nepal, Bhutan is a very conservative country and pageant like this is considered a taboo.

This shot of Tsokey Tsoino, 23, frolicking in the water is taken during a visit at Golden Sunset Resort and Spa in Calatagan, Batangas.

Good luck, Tsokey.

Pakistan Brags Their Beauty Queens

I have been reading news article about Pakistani beauty pageants and I can't help myself but to raise my eyebrows. I am asking myself if I have missed any international beauty pageants with a Pakistani representative competing but I guess I have never seen so many except in Mrs. World or in Miss Earth.

But according to two news article, the Pakistani women are the most beautiful women on earth and that out of 20 beauty pageants they have participated in for the last five years, they have captured 15 of the titles.

Based on what I have seen in my travel abroad, I have to agree Pakistani women are more beautiful  in general than the Indian women but not overall in the world.

Well, this is subjective and probably the writers are just being too patriotic or nationalistic. I leave to you the judgment. Take a look on these two articles.

Nosheen Idrees - Miss Pakistan Earth 2009

Natasha Paracha - Miss Pakistan World 2008

Nosheen Idrees standing 5 feet 7 inches in height, and a runner up 3 of Miss Pakistan World is representing Pakistan in the third largest pageant in the World. In a span of just over 5 years, Pakistan has established Miss Pakistan World and Mrs. Pakistan World, participating in 20 international beauty pageants and winning over 15 international pageant titles.

Sonia Ahmed, President of Miss Pakistan World said that Pakistan has accomplished what other countries took 50 years to accomplish in just over 5 years. Pakistani women are the most beautiful women in the world and pageants are a very important way for these women to be given a voice. The Miss Pakistan World pageant will be in its 7th year whereas the Mrs. Pakistan World will be in its 3rd year in the year 2009.

2009 will mark the seventh year for the Miss Pakistan World pageant. Pakistan will go down in history for being the country becoming a success in just less than 5 years in international pageantry.

The 21st World Miss University will be taking place this November and Tahira Iqbal, Runner up 4 will be representing Pakistan internationally. Tahira has also won Miss Congeniality for Miss Pakistan World 2008. Previous World Miss University Pakistan delegates were Zehra Sheerazi, Sonya Zia, Bushra Jamil and now Tahira Iqbal.

Sonia Ahmed President of Miss Pakistan World has expressed her excitement in sending Pakistan to its 21st international pageant for 2008. She is expecting to finish another three pageants before year end.

Nosheen Idrees, the 22 year old from Jhelum Pakistan, will be representing ‘Pakistan’ in the Miss Earth pageant.

A student of communications at the University of Sheffield, Miss Idrees was crowned the third runner up for the Miss Pakistan World pageant on the 23rd of May 2008.

Nosheen expects to bring back a title, which can place Pakistan as a country that has the most beautiful women all through the world.

Nosheen said, “Pakistan is a country where the most beautiful women exist and it's a shame that it's not recognized for it.”

Nosheen is set to change the perception of how the world considers Pakistan and confidently she saids that she may be capable of spreading the message of harmony for her country and be a great representative for the youth.

In her statement, Sonia Ahmed, the president of Miss Pakistan World, said that Pakistan has reached 20 international pageants in just 5 years time and that the main mission is to continue with the effort to get Pakistan recognized as the country with the most talented and beautiful women in the world.

International Beauty Queens Who Set their Feet in Philippine Soil

You may have read some of these in my previous posts but it is fun to collet them in  one article written to us by Ricardo Lo of Funfare. The subject is about international beauty queens who set their feet in Philippine soil. This is the  time when Philippines was a super beauty power in the world and the leading country in Asia.

Ricardo opened his article by saying "Celso sent the following nostalgia piece about Miss International beauties who visited the Philippines, plus an interesting sidelight about Gemma Cruz, the Philippines' first international title-holder."

• Maria Stella Marquez Zawadsky of Colombia, the first Miss International (1960), arrived in Manila on March 31, 1961 on Pan American Airways flight. She appeared in the Pageant of World Beauty Queens held on April 5 to 11 that same year at the Araneta Coliseum (where she and Jorge Araneta, now her husband, first met). Sponsored by The Manila Chronicle, the show was for the benefit of The Foundation for Gifted Children headed by then First Lady Leonila D. Garcia. With Stella were three of her runners-up: namely Iona Pinto of India (first), Sigridur Geirsdottir of Iceland (second) and Joyce Kay of England (third); semi-finalists Edita Vital (Miss Philippines), Michiko Takagi (Miss Japan) and Christl D'Cruz (Miss Singapore).

The two-hour presentation showcased elegant ternos created by Ramon Valera, costumes and ensembles worn by famous stars in multi-million dollar Hollywood productions such as Song Without End, Oklahoma, Desiree, The King and I and The Alamo. It also featured the reenactment of Stella's coronation as Miss International.

• Constance "Stanny" van Baer of Holland, Miss International 1961, arrived in Manila on Dec. 13, 1961 for that year's Pageant of World Beauty Queens also at the Araneta Coliseum. The show was part of Christmas Cavalcade topbilled by American balladeers Jerry Valle and Don Cherry. Adding glitter to the show were local beauties Pilar Arciaga (Miss Philippines-International 1961), Cynthia Ugalde (Miss Press Photography of the Philippines 1961) and Helen Gamboa (first runner-up Miss Press Photography of the Philippines 1961); together with Sigrun Ragnarsdottir (Miss Iceland and fourth runner-up Miss International 1961), Renate Moller (Miss Germany and semi-finalist Miss International 1961), Carmen Anze (Miss Bolivia 1961), Julie Koh (Miss Singapore 1961 who failed to compete in the pageant because she was ill of hepatitis), Sharon Wiley (Miss Oregon 1961) and Marlene Loren (1961 Miss California and third runner-up Miss USA 1961).

• Nine days after she was crowned as Miss International 1964, Gemma Cruz and her mom Chitang Nakpil headed for Manila for her much-awaited homecoming. During a stop-over in Honolulu, Gemma bought a grass skirt for herself. On board the same flight were the members of Bayanihan Dance Troupe fresh from their triumphant world tour. At exactly 7:02 a.m. on Aug. 24, 1964, PAL-operated KLM Flying Dutchman (dubbed as "Miss International Flight") touched down at the Manila International Airport. Over 200,000 jubilant Filipinos (the largest ever to welcome a returning Filipina international beauty queen) lined up the streets from the airport to Escolta to her house in San Juan.

Then Manila Mayor Antonio Villegas declared that day Araw ni Gemma and awarded her a golden medallion as Outstanding Manilan (the first time such an award was given by the city). A song titled Gemma (a "habanera") was specially composed in her honor by Prof. Felipe Padilla de Leon (translator of the original lyrics of Lupang Hinirang from Spanish to Tagalog and National Artist for Music, 1997) which was sung by Tony Toledo during the reception given by Mayor Villegas. Late that afternoon, Gemma paid a courtesy call to Pres. Diosdado Macapagal who bestowed on her the Golden Heart Presidential decoration. A formal tea party was tendered by First Lady Eva Macapagal and was graced by beauty queens Stella Marquez de Araneta, Cristina Galang-Caedo (Miss Philippines 1953), Monina Yllana-Fernando (Miss Philippines 1963 and semi-finalist in Miss International that year), Bessie Ocampo-Buencamino (Miss Philippines 1954 and semi-finalist in Miss Universe that year) and Edith Nakpil-Rabat (Miss Philippines 1956). Composer and public school teacher Alice Doria-Gamilla presented to Gemma the lyric sheets of her compositions, Gemma and My Wonderful World is You.

An Issue Over Miss Taiwan's Sash in Miss International 2008

21 October 2008

The heat is on in Miss International 2008 pageant and controversies or issues is starting to pick up. This is the usual scene every year. I guess this is inevitable.

Currently, the candidates for Miss International 2008 are in Japan for some series of events before they fly to Macau where the grand coronation is to take place. So, in my effort to update you the latest development in this fourth largest pageant on earth, I am bringing you an issue over the sash of Miss Taiwan.

Geez, politics has to play once more in a beauty pageant. This is irritating for pageant fans like me. Agree?

Well, the twist of the story is the "belittling" or "insult" of the pageant organizer to the representative of Taiwan.

TAIPEI, Taiwan –– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said yesterday that it is investigating whether Taiwan’s representative in the Miss International beauty pageant was belittled by the competition’s Japanese organizer.

“The Foreign Ministry’s representative office in Japan is trying to figure out what happened,” MOFA spokesman Henry Chen said. “If there is any unreasonable arrangement or downgrading of Taiwan, the representative office will protest to the organizer and ask for a correction.”

According to local daily Liberty Times, Taiwan’s representative in the 2008 Miss International Ting Yen-yu was given two sashes, reading “Taiwan” and “Chinese Taipei” by the Japanese organizer and was told “to wear either of them depending on where you are.”

The Taiwanese contestant apparently interpreted the move to mean that she could wear the “Taiwan”s ash while performing competition-related duties in Japan but would have to wear the “Chinese Taipei” sash during the actual competition being held in Macau.

The candidates from 68 countries are in Tokyo to conduct a series of charity events before competing in the final of Miss International Beauty Pageant 2008 slated to be held in Macau on Nov. 8.

Ting’s instructor Chang Ming-chu criticized the organizer for disrespecting the candidate.

“The judges will be confused by different sashes as they do not know which country she (Ting) represents,” Chang was quoted as saying by the news report.

“Also, questioning our candidate this and that is not only discrimination but also a blow to her confidence,” she added.

Ting was cited as saying that she will wear the “Taiwan” sash in Macau and see what happens.

The MOFA’s Chen said Taiwan’s representatives usually use the designation “Chinese Taipei, “ “Taiwan” or “Republic of China, “ depending on which name Taiwan uses to join the related international organizing body for the event.

Since the Japanese organizer gave Ting the “Taiwan” sash, it means that the organizer agrees to the candidate using “Taiwan,” Chen said, adding that the MOFA will fight for the rights of Taiwan’s representative in the competition.

The contest organizers do not seem to have a standard used for the country’s name.

On their Web site, the 2006 Taiwan representative Liu Tzu-hsuan was listed under the name “Taiwan,” while the 2007 Taiwan representative, Hung Tzu-wei, was listed under the name “Chinese Taipei.”

Created in Long Beach, California in 1960, Miss International is the largest beauty pageant in the world next to Miss Universe and Miss World. Since 1972, it has been held in Japan and from that time, Miss International has attained the status of a quasi-national event garnering a reputation as the “Olympics of Beauty.”

Marit Woods Talks About Miss Earth Liberia 2008

20 October 2008

Here is an interesting article about Miss Liberia to Miss Earth 2008 pageant. Her name is Marit Woods. Liberia is a predominantly Muslim country and beauty pageants are often condemned by the society. So, it is not surprising to see their candidate coming from the United States of America.

These article and video are lifted from the The Liberian Journal.

Marit Woods Talks About Miss Earth Liberia 2008 from The Liberian Journal on Vimeo.

Miss Marit Woods, a 21-year-old Liberian model, leaves Minnesota on Sunday October 19, 2008, to represent Liberia in the 2008 Miss Earth pageant in Manila, Philippines.

The contest, which brings together national beauties and talents between the ages of 18 to 26, is also part of a bigger effort to promote global environment causes.

Since her selection in August, Marit has launched a series of events to solicit community support, all of which have now crystallized into a huge momentum around her candidacy and widespread public endorsement of her participation in the forthcoming pageant.

Last month, Marit organized an “Open and Closed Auction” at Vicky’s Restaurant in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The event, she said, was part of an effort to raise funds to underwrite the cost of her trip to Philippines.

On October 5, she was featured in a star-studded event at Klub Afrika, a local African club in Minnesota. With a crowd twice the size of the club’s regular attendance, Marit succeeded in making a case why her participation in the contest is likely to contribute to environmental and health issues that remain at the heart of our common humanity.

The occasion, interspersed with performances by Liberian singer Vee Washington and Ghanaian Dancer Christian Adeti, provided a unique moment for Marit to highlight the issues that have long struck her, especially as an emerging advocate on topics that have come to spur and define discussions on health and the environment.

“It saddens me daily to realize that on a daily basis the basic necessity that all citizens within a country deserve is not accessible to all. As Miss Earth Liberia 2008 my objective is to educate Liberians and others around the world on how to keep their water resources safe and sanitized. Using this knowledge they can come together and approach their elected government officials to change practices and laws that are preventing sanitized water from being available to all”, Marit said, with a passion unparallel in its authenticity.

Carousel Productions, Inc. the organizer of the pageant, is reported to have said: ”…Beauty queens would be good and effective advocates of worthy causes”.

Marit could not agree more. For her, the pageant is only a means to a greater end. She is quick to point out that the event itself provides an important platform for her campaign, to pursue goals that are clearly critical to the health of the world, especially third world countries.

She admits that her contribution is not the “long-awaited” solution to the global environment and health problems but that, in a way, it adds onto other efforts aimed at making things little bit better for those who have suffered as a result of inaction.

“In some countries the need for sanitized water is vital. Clean drinking water is not accessible to all. Clean water should not be a commodity that is accessible to a select few. We need to act in our own little ways”, she added. “Sanitized water is vital to our health and well-being”.

Drinking unsanitary water, she further explained, can lead to water-borne diseases such as “diarrhea, dysentery, cholera and infectious hepatitis”.

Editor’s Note: Marit Woods is the daughter of Samuel Kofi Woods, a life-long Liberian Human Rights Advocate. He is also Liberia’s Labor Ministry. The organizers could not immediately release detailed information on the participation of other contestants prior to the publication of this story. The Liberian Journal wishes Marit Woods the best of luck.

International Beauty Queens Who Made Philippines Their Second Home

19 October 2008

I have discussed Armi Kuusela, first Miss Universe winner ever; Priscilla Meiralles, Miss Earth winner, and Amparo Munoz, Spain's only Miss Universe in my previous posts. But here is an article that tells more about them. We will also try to take a peek on Michelle Van Eimeren and Vivica Babajee of Australia and Mauritius respectively. Both women competed in 1994 Miss Universe in Manila, Philipines. Dayanara Torres, Puerto Rico's third Miss Universe and first Miss International winner ever from Colombia Stella Marquez-Araneta are also in the article.

This article is about beauty queens who fell in love with the Philippines and made this country their second home for a while or up to now like Stella Marquez-Araneta.

They say there's so much to love about the Philippines—scenic places, yummy food, and unique culture. For some tourists who frequently vacation in the country, it's the warm Pinoys that always make them feel comfortable as they wandering around this Southeast Asian country.

Some foreigners even choose to live here permanently, no matter how well off they are in their own country. They find love and start a new family.

In showbiz, Pinoys are also very open to watching foreign talents in television and movies. This is another reason for people who come from abroad to stay in the country and make a living.

Just look at this list of PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) of beauty queens who made the Philippines their second home, if only for a while.

Armi Kuusela. This Finnish beauty queen, who was 17 years old then, was the first-ever winner of the prestigious Miss Universe pageant in June 1952.

She was among the 29 contestants who joined the beauty contest held in Long Beach, California. After Miss Universe, Armi Kuusela became an actress playing herself in the Finnish movie World's Most Beautiful Girl.

As part of her winning the pageant, Universal Studios offered her a movie with the popular American comic duo Abbott and Costello (William Abbott and Lou Costello). But Armi Kuusela refused the offer and went on a world tour instead.

During her trip, she met Filipino businessman Virgilio Hilario. Armi had to give up her crown in less than a year to marry the rich businessman in Tokyo, Japan.

The couple lived for several years in Makati's affluent Forbes Park, where they raised their five children. Unfortunately in 1975, Virgilio Hilario died of a heart attack. Three years after the death of her Filipino husband, Armi decided to marry American diplomat Albert Williams. They moved to San Diego, California.

Until now, Armi still is the former beauty queen who helps cause-oriented groups. She actively participates in charities and is involved in cancer research at the Burnham Institute.

Stella Marquez-Araneta. The next beauty queen who chose to reside in the country was 1959 Miss Columbia Stella Marquez. As a representative of her country, Stella competed in the 1960 Miss Universe held in Miami Beach, Florida, where she placed as a semifinalist.

Though she was not able to get the Miss Universe title, Stella was able to get her luck when she vied for the Miss International title on the same year in Long Beach, California. This made her the first Miss International and first Latina Miss International.

Not long after carrying the Miss International title, the Columbian beauty queen married Jorge Araneta, the current CEO of the Araneta Group.

In 1964, Stella put up the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Incorporated (BPCI), which annually organizes the most prestigious beauty pageant in the Philippines, Binibining Pilipinas, after she acquired the local franchise for the Miss Universe Pageant. The top three winners of this competition will be the official representatives for Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International.

Aside from selecting representatives to worldwide beauty pageants, BPCI also helps a number of orphanages in Metro Manila and gives skills training and educational workshops to less fortunate kids.

Dayanara Torres. The 1993 Miss Universe first saw the Philippines in 1994 when she came here to crown the new Miss Universe.

Shortly after this stint, Dayanara immediately got proposals for product endorsements. She stayed on even longer when she started to get offers for TV appearances and movie projects.

One of these offers was to be a mainstay in the Sunday variety show ASAP. Here, Filipinos saw how graceful she danced on stage, and so she was given the title "Dancing Queen." Also, according to Wikipedia, she won the Best New Female TV Personality award in the 1995 PMPC Star Awards for TV.

In movies, she was able to work with Gary Valenciano for Hataw Na! in 1995; Cesar Montano for Type Kita, Walang Kokontra in 1999; and Aga Muhlach for Basta't Kasama Kita in 1995.

Although not clearly stated when it started, Dayanara had a relationship with the former Bagets star Aga Muhlach, whom she first met on the set of their movie together. Their relationship lasted for four years.

All these projects and her constant interaction with local celebrities somehow helped Dayanara in learning to speak Tagalog easily.

In 1998, the year she reportedly broke up with her local celebrity boyfriend, Dayanara went back to Puerto Rico and released her first and only music album called Antifaz. She also did supporting roles in a Puerto Rican TV series called La Cenicienta (1999) and in the American soap operas The Young and the Restless (2004) and Watch Over Me (2006).

In 2000 Dayanara married international singer Marc Anthony, with whom she had two sons, Christian Anthony and Ryan Anthony. Their marriage was short-lived and they separated in 2003.

In the last quarter of 2006, Dayanara made a short visit in the Philippines to endorse the controversial Beverly Hills 6750 cosmetic surgery clinic. (Click here to read related article )

Michelle Van Eimeren. The Australian beauty queen Michelle Van Eimeren fell for the popular singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid. She chose to stay here after the 1994 Miss Universe pageant, which was hosted by the Philippines.

In that same year, Michelle, who acted as a mermaid, starred with Ogie in the movie Manolo and Michelle Hapi Together. Then, in less than a year, they appeared together in another movie titled Isko: Adventures in Animasia.

Michelle and Ogie's romance grew stronger and they decided to get married in 1998. Their union produced two lovely daughters, Leila and Sarah.

The marriage ended, however, after Michelle moved back to Australia in 2003, together with the children. This started the speculations about the couple's separation.

The couple tried to keep mum about the rumored annulment for years until Ogie admitted publicly his romantic relationship with Asia's Songbird and SOP co-host Regine Velasquez.

But all's well that ends well. Michelle, Leila, and Sarah recently had a reunion with Ogie and Regine on the occasion of Ogie's 20th anniversary concert.

Priscilla Meirelles. The latest beauty queen who decided to live in the country is the 2004 Miss Earth winner Priscilla Meirelles. The 25-year-old Brazilian lady is also the 2003 Miss Globe title-holder.

Priscilla Meirelles stayed in the country for good after having a successful career in modeling. Since 2007, she has graced the cover of several publications and has appeared in some television shows.

Last September 28, at the unveiling of the Star Magic 2009 Catalogue, Priscilla was introduced as one of the celebrities included in "The Next Wave" of stars of the said talent arm, along with another Brazilian model Mariana del Rio.

If these are not enough reasons for Priscilla to stay in the Philippines, there's still her boyfriend, actor John Estrada, who is very proud of her as a newbie in show business.

Viveca Babajee. The last but definitely not the least is Mauritius's representative in the 1994 Miss Universe, Viveca Babajee.

Like her "batchmate" Michelle Van Eimeren, Viveca was about to start a career in showbiz but she got involved in the unforgettable 1994 Manila Film Fest Scam.

Unfortunately, she did not become famous by appearing in TV shows and movies. Pinoys remember her for the famous line, "Take it, take it." This is what she whispered to Ruffa Gutierrez's brother and one of the co-presenters, Rocky, to take the envelope that contained the name of the real winner for best actress.

These are just six of the world-class beauties who made Manila their second home. Unknown to younger generation, some other beauty queens tried to enter the crazy world of local showbiz.

This includes beauties from the 1974 Miss Universe Pageant, which was held in Manila: Miss Spain Amparo Muñoz, who appeared in the movie Hayop sa Ganda (1983) with our very own Miss Universe beauty Gloria Diaz; Miss United Kingdom Helen Morgan, who appeared in the movie Isang Gabi sa Buhay ng Isang Babae; Miss Finland Johanna Raunio, who appeared in the movie Lorelei (1974) with comedian Chiquito and veteran actress Anita Linda.

The list does not stop here. As long as we maintain our famous hospitality and showbiz remains open to aspiring actresses/models, the list of world-class beauties who settle in the country will go on.

I have announced here that the 48th Miss International Beauty Pageant will be held on the 8th of November 2008 in Venetian Macau Resort Hotel. Sixty (60) contestants are expected to attend the pageant and the outgoing Miss International is Miss Mexico Priscilla Perales Elizondo.

The different delegates are now embarking from their countries to convene in Macau. I have announced here that Miss Philippines, Patricia Fernandez, flew from Manila to Macau today.

Of the expected 60 delegates from all over the world, Miss Guadeloupe Nancy Karen Fleurival and Miss Canada Elina Semikina are the tallest candidates at 6'2" and 6'1" respectively. Miss Hong Kong Sire Ma is the smallest at 5'3"1/2. There are four ladies who stand 5'5" - the second smallest. They are Miss Sri Lanka Faith Landers,  Miss Singapore Tok Wee Ee, Miss Macau Florence Loi and Miss Hawaii Serena Karnagy.

Another interesting note on this pageant is the participation of Miss Estonia Kardi Nogu - the very first for her country thus this is the debut of Estonia in Miss International pageant.

Eight countries are returning after years of abscence in the pageant. Italy last competed in 1994, Belgium in 1996, Hawaii in 2004. 2005 is the last time Macau, Bahamas and Sweden competed and 2006 for Martinique and Norway.

In the history of this pageant, Venezuela was the winningest country with 5 winners followed by the Philippines with 4. Venezuela won in 1985, 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2006. Philippines won in 1964, 1970, 1979 and 2005.

An Interview with Riyo Mori

17 October 2008

Riyo Mori is the second Japanese to win the Miss Universe crown in 2007 after Akiko Kojima in 1959. That was after 48 years.

Riyo is a trendsetter in this pageant. She wore a gown designed by a famous designer during the final night of the pageant in Mexico. When she passed her crown to Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela last June in Vietnam, she bravely wore a tuxedo - a very unconventional for a beauty queen. But she was lovely in that night. Clearly, Riyo was revolutionizing the beauty pageant world.

I would like to share with you an interview conducted by CNN to Riyo.

CNN: What made you decide to enter the Miss Universe competition?

Riyo Mori: My Grandmother. Japan, 50 or 60 years ago, was very conservative. Women had to stand behind men and never talk, never give an opinion -- and my grandma was different. I love her so much. She found out that there was Miss Universe Japan and that's how everything started. She said, "Riyo, you're young, you can dance, you can teach dancing, you love it, it's good -- but maybe you should see a different world. Just go for it." And I said, 'OK' and now I'm here.

CNN: What's it like for you to be back in Shizuoka?

Riyo Mori: It's so nice to be back home. I can relax, I can sleep. This is my first vacation, I think -- just having fun with my family, my friends, and talking to my friend in a café. That was my normal life before and since I became Miss Universe it suddenly stopped. I always have to be in the mood, and I have to be Miss Universe, so this is just perfect for me to be in my hometown of Shizuoka.

CNN: How would you describe your relationship with Tokyo?

Riyo Mori: I love Tokyo, like I love New York; I love big cities. The first time I came to Tokyo was even before becoming a finalist for Miss Universe Japan. I was so excited. Also I was scared too, because people look so fashionable and people look so confident here and I was just a tourist from the countryside. I was very nervous.

People from all over the world come to see Tokyo, and so that's why you can see very unique people here. People speak Spanish, French, German, English, and Japanese; there's a very mixed culture here

CNN: How would you define Tokyoites?

Riyo Mori: I feel like people are so energetic here, so different from Shizuoka. People keep moving -- they never stop. Tokyo never sleeps. Tokyo people are so busy all the time. I wouldn't say they are cold, they're just busy; they don't have time to talk to others.

I need a balance, I have to be in Shizuoka for maybe 50 percent of the year and I have to be in Tokyo too, because I need this energy.

CNN: How did you become a dancer?

Riyo Mori: I started to learn dance in mother's dance school. My mom is my best friend, of course, my mother and teacher. So we have very unique relationship. We are not just mom and daughter, we're also teacher and student.

My mom teaches jazz dance, tap dance, modern dance, but she doesn't teach ballet. I thought I should learn how to teach ballet, so I can have different class than she has. So I went to Canada when I was 16. I went to high school and professional ballet school in Canada. It was very, very tough, but it was worth it now that I can teach ballet. Now I want to teach young people, through dancing, how to be positive, patient and happy. These three things are very important to me.

Dancing means a lot to me, because dancing is my life, part of my life. I have been dancing for a long time -- maybe 17 years. Dancing is great because this is how I express myself; this is where I learned how to be confident.

CNN: What was your mum's reaction to you winning Miss Universe?

Riyo Mori: She was very happy when I won Miss Universe --'my daughter can travel the world and see people' -- see the culture that she couldn't. So she was very happy.

CNN: Outside dancing, what else do you enjoy?

Riyo Mori: I'm a huge fan of baseball. Baseball fans here in Japan are very supportive and crazy. They can go crazy too, but that's a good part of Japanese people -- if you like something, you're very into it and support it.

CNN: What else do you love about the city?

Riyo Mori: I think Tokyo is the best place to shop. Ginza is a great place and I like the atmosphere too. When I became finalist for Miss Universe Japan, almost every week I went to Harajuko to shop. Also, this is very close to Miss Universe Japan's office, so I was back and forwards to the office almost all the time.

Patricia Fernandez praying to be RP's 5th Ms. International

Binibining Pilipinas International Patricia Fernandez possesses what a Filipina needs to have to stand out in a crowd of beautiful women from around the world: talent and brains.

Fernandez is off to Macau, China on Saturday to participate in the 48th Miss International Beauty Pageant, which will be held on November 8 at the Venetian Macao Resort-Hotel.

The young Filipina, a graduate of BA Speech Communication from the University of the Philippines, trained for months at the prestigious Dale Carnegie Training, and had to learn three languages, including Mandarin and Nihonggo.

Since winning the Bb. Pilipinas International crown, Fernandez has become more graceful after undergoing training in jazz, latin and belly dancing.

Nervous

Despite her radiant beauty and talent, Fernandez told media people during her send off party at the Mandarin Suites at the Gateway Mall in Cubao, that she is very nervous and needs the Filipinos' support to grab the Miss International crown.
"Please, please pray for me. I badly need your prayers. I hope I will be your fifth Miss International," she said. "I'm nervous, but I hope I will be able to make our country proud."

Fernandez is hoping to follow the steps of Lara Quigaman, who won the 2005 Miss International Beauty Pageant held in Japan.

Quigaman is the fourth Filipina to grab the prestigious crown. The other Filipina beauties that have been crowned Miss International were Melanie Marquez, Aurora Pijuan and Gemma Cruz.

At the send off, Fernandez gave the media people a taste of her talent playing the piano. She said she has been playing the piano since she was six years old.

She sang a Kundiman (a genre of traditional Filipino love songs), while playing the piano. The Filipina beauty boasts a talent in singing as she trained for two years with the UP Singing Ambassadors.

Patchot is taken

In her brief encounter with the press people at the send off, Fernandez, fondly called "Patchot" by her family and close friends, threw out the bad news: She's taken.

She said her boyfriend, whom she said she had been dating since college, will also fly to Macau to witness the beauty pageant.

Also coming with Fernandez are her mother, her mother's friends and her sister.

Asked if she's willing to have a career in the entertainment business, Fernandez said she is open to it. However, she said she is more focused on the upcoming beauty pageant, and that making movies rarely comes to her mind.

Bringing to Macau the Filipino's warmth

Aside from a winter jacket, which she had been advised to bring because of the cold climate in Macau, Fernandez said she will show the world the Filipino's warmth.

"What I am most proud of about the Philippines is the fact that our people are as warm as our climate," the Filipina beauty said.

Nina Ricci Alagao: A Woman of Substance

16 October 2008

Looking back at the Miss Universe 2000 pageant in Cyprus, I can't help myself but to sigh once I think of the fate of Miss Philippines - Nina Ricci Alagao.

Personally, she should have been the perfect winner in that year pageant that eventually went to the over-hyped Miss India Lara Dutta.

Lara is not a good role model if we have to believe what some of the people behind the pageant claim. She has an attitude.

Nina Ricci has everything. She has the brains, body and beauty. But, unfortunately, politics done her.

As a tribute to a very brilliant woman, let's take a look once more on his interview posted at the Miss Universe site.

Interview of Nina Ricci Alagao

Miss Philippines-Universe 2000

1. What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than representing your country in this pageant)?

I have been living independently from my parents for several years now. God has been very kind to continue to bless me with many things, including upkeep of my apartment and financial support for my brother, whom I send to college. Although I grew out of poverty, I am proud to say that did not get in the way of proper breeding, top-quality education and pushing through with my art.

2. What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

My interests are primarily in the arts, particularly in the visual arts. My love for it dates as far back as age five. I remember my father teaching me perspective highlights and casting of shadows in drawing at that age. I haven't lost my touch. As a matter of fact, my skill just keeps on improving.

3. What is your career ambition? What are you doing or plan on doing to accomplish that goal?

I want to become a famous artist in the field of Visual Arts, where my training has deep roots. I believe I have what it takes to become one. I hope to put on an art exhibit in New York, which is one of the Art centers of the world, and winning the 2000 Miss Universe Pageant would make way for that goal and open doors to greater opportunities.

4. In today's society, women play prominent roles in business, politics, education, sports, entertainment, and the arts. What are the contributions that pageants make to today's women?

I used to look at beauty pageants as merely superficial and decided that I was not going be a part of any, but eventually my perception changed in such a way that it made me realize that pageants help instill discipline, will, courage, strength, grace, and articulation in a woman. These are characteristics that are very crucial to the complicated roles that women play in today's society. Having been a beauty queen myself, I have become a better person, and I look forward to setting a good example to every aspiring woman.

5. If you become MISS UNIVERSE and have a chance to represent the women of the world, what is the primary goal that you want to accomplish?

I would like to address all the women in the world through art. I am well aware that being Miss Universe entails a lot of privileges, such as expression of oneself and empowerment of women. If I become this year's Miss Universe, I will put on an art exhibit that would applaud women and their strength. That way, I will be able to communicate my message that women have what it takes to be respected and to contribute greatly to society.

6. What question would you like to answer that you have never been asked? What is the answer?

I like to be asked about my views on racism. The Philippines is still a developing country. Many Filipinos work in different parts of the world, including some places where they are discriminated against. What people do for a living should not be considered a basis for who they really are. I don't speak of Filipinos, per se, but for every citizen who is discriminated against. I believe that every person, great or small, should be treated equally as human beings.

7. Please add anything about yourself that you would like us to know that we haven't asked.

If there is such a thing as clairvoyance or clairaudience, I don't know what to call mine. Since I was a kid, I have always had weird encounters with words and phrases that were preconceived thoughts that then happened. For example, I was writing to a friend of mine and as I wrote, "...just always remember that...," the same phrase played on the radio as an excerpt from a song. On another occasion, I was talking to a friend about "2% ... and 98%" when all of a sudden an ad came on about a child who was "2% patient and 98% actor." What kind of coincidence was that?

A Beauty Queen Hit the Heart of Novak Djokovik

15 October 2008

Who says that beauty queens are fragile and delicate?

That's definitely a wrong notion because you can be a beauty queen and an athlete at the same time. Take the case of Paraguayan beauty queen who stole the limelight last Olympics in Beijing. Make way to Leryn Franco.

I remember while the Beijing Olympics was ongoing, one of the hottest topics in blogs and other discussion boards was this apparently tall lady who was marching along with the Paraguayan contingent on the opening day. No one noticed here immediately but after few days, she was named as a beauty queen from Paraguay who is competing in javelin throw.

Wow. What an incredible woman?

In 2006, Leryn joined Miss Paraguay contest and she ended up as a runner up. She participated at the Miss Bikini Universe pageant and also has her own calendar which was shot in 2007 by Martin Crespo.

Here is a news about her from theimproper.com.

Paraguayan javelin thrower Leryn Franco wowed the catwalk this week. The 26-year old model, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in August, worked the catwalk in revealing tops and sexy lingerie at a recent fashion show.

The leggy Leryn has been a part-time model and bikini contestant for years while competing in javelin events.

In 2006, she was the runner-up in the Miss Paraguay beauty pageant and Miss Bikini Universe contest. Leryn became an Internet sensation this summer, thanks to her athletic good looks, and it looks like her newfound notoriety has helped boost her modeling career.

"Modeling is a way for me to continue with my sport," Franco said. "The hours are flexible, and you can earn good money through photographic modeling and the catwalk."

In 2004, Franco competed at the Athens Olympics, where she placed 42nd overall. Leryn's personal best throw is 55.38 meters, achieved in May 2007. Leryn was born 1982 in Asunción, Paraguay. Her full name is Leryn Dahiana Franco Stenery, and she's 5'8" tall and 123 lbs.

In 1998, Franco set the Paraguayan national records for javelin and triple jump in the under-17 age group. In 2001, Leryn won the South American Junior Championship for javelin. She has competed in javelin and track since she was a teen.

Leryn is reportedly dating Novak Djokovic, a 21-year-old Serbian tennis player who's currently ranked No. 3 in the world. The 6'3" Djokovic, who makes his home in Monaco, won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January 2008. The sizzling duo were seen walking around hand-in-hand at the Olympic village in Beijing this summer.

Sarah Palin at Miss Alaska 1994 Talent Competition

13 October 2008

I know Sarah Palin or Sarah Heath during her Miss Alaska 1984 moments is one of the most watched political candidates not only in the United States of America but all over the world.

While Sarah is preparing for the election, a new video has surfaced showing the former beauty pageant contestant playing the flute for the talent portion of the 1984 Miss Alaska competition.

In the video, the announcer introduces Palin by saying: "An accomplished flautist who has been performing for 10 years. She will be performing "The Homecoming" as written by Nathan Hardy."

Here is the video.

She is not just a former beauty queen but she is about to become the second most powerful person on the world's most powerful country.

Her name is Sarah Palin. She placed second during the Miss Alaska 1984 beauty pageant. Now at 44, she made history as the first woman on a Republican presidential ticket when Sen. John McCain announced on August 29 that she would be his vice presidential running mate.

Since then, she became one of the most talked and watched political candidate. And as for us, the pageant fans, we are eager to see any video of her during the pageant. Luckily, An Alaskan has uploaded what he claims to be actual footage of Palin in a red tanksuit, strutting her stuff in the 1984 Miss Alaska beauty pageant. The emcee introduces her, reads her bio and compliments her leadership.

The emcee is heard saying, "Sarah says she wants to prepare for a career in television broadcasting by majoring in telecommunications and political science. It is no wonder that she has also been recognized by 'Who's Who?' since she has displayed her leadership in all areas, from academics to student politics to athletics... The Very First Miss Bhutan

While the audience looked on with unabated breath, 24-year-old Tshokey Tshomo Karchung was crowned Miss Bhutan 2008 at a contest held in Thimphu 10 October. The Miss Bhutan also walked away with two other titles: Miss Talented and Miss Photogenic. “I kept every confidence to compete and I am so relieved,” said Tshokey Tshomo who will be representing the country for Miss Earth 2008 in Philippines and Miss Young International in Taiwan.

Among other prizes, the Miss Bhutan took home a cash prize of Nu 0.1 million.

She was crowned by Miss Thailand 2006 Charm Reya Osthanond, one of the five judges. Fifteen women competed for the title at the contest that lasted past midnight.

“The grand finale had seven judges for the finals, five Bhutanese and two international celebrities – Kelly Dorji and former Miss Thailand and actress Charm Reya Osathanond,” said Karma Tshering, Director of Miss Bhutan Organisation that hosted the event.

“The reason we had more Bhutanese judges is to make sure that the contestants are judged more on inner beauty than on physical beauty. In most of the international pageants, they have only one round on inner beauty, the Q&A round and that’s it,” Karma said. The finals had five rounds – traditional dress round, evening gown round (using Bhutanese textiles), express yourself round, talent round and Q&A round. There will be no swimsuit round. “We did not have any swimsuit round. We don't think it is really necessary. It instead worries many parents, relatives and community. True beauty needs not be judged through one’s skin,” Karma said. “But of course, when our winner participates in international pageants, she has to follow the criteria they set,” he added.

Held for the first time, 77 contestants from across the country registered for Miss Bhutan 2008. Twenty contestants were shortlisted for the main event through the preliminary round. The winner of the title is the country’s only delegate at global pageants. She will be participating in Miss Earth pageant in Philippines, Miss Young International in Taiwan and Miss Safari 2008 in Kenya later this year.

“We think beauty of a woman should not only be judged on her physical appearance but on her inner qualities like concern for tradition and culture, preservation of environment, social awareness, general knowledge and above all who is kind and seek to improve the lives of others. This is our version of true beauty,” Karma added. “This concept will make us stand out and I wish all the international contests are judged more on inner beauty, at least 50 per cent. A winner judged on inner beauty will not only make a great role model but will also be able to render better service to charitable works,” Karma said.

Miss Tibet Attracts Only 2 Contestants

Is this your first time to hear a beauty pageant with only two contestants? Yes, Miss Tibet can't get more contestants because this small territory is very conservative. The pageant has to go on. At least there is a pageant of this kind unlike in Nepal where it has to be canceled because of a pressure and threats from the Maoists.

Here is an article coming from newpostonline.com

Miss Tibet 2008 beauty pageant attracts only two contestants

Two Tibetan damsels will compete in the Miss Tibet 2008 beauty pageant starting here on October 12.

The names of the only two participants will be disclosed on Sunday.

Tibetans say that current unrest in Tibet and their extremely conservative society are factors responsible for the poor response.

“From my point of view, at least I can imagine something that probably because of the recent unrest in Tibet, starting March and then it continued in throughout April, May, June. There isn’t any an atmosphere for celebrations within Tibetan society. So I think Tibetan girls are shying away from that,” said Lobsang Wangyal, Director Miss Tibet Pageant.

Wangyal added that continuation of Miss Tibet beauty pageant would definitely help in improving Tibetan society.

The winner will receive 100,000 rupees, while the runners-up will receive 50,000 rupees.

Dolma Tseringkyi, Miss Tibet 2003 agrees that traditional values and the political unrest is preventing Tibetan girls from participating in the event.

“It’s really very disappointing that there are only two ladies this year. One thing is the social pressure and the other is the traditional thinking,” she said.

Tseringkyi represented Tibet in Miss Tourism World contests in Malaysia and Mexico, winning the Miss Goodwill and best National Costumes titles respectively.

Miss Tibet 2006 was able to enter the Miss Earth 2006 competition in the Philippines.

Lobsang Wangyal Productions started the pageant in 2002 when a majority of the four short-listed girls backed out facing flak from community leaders. The pageant has survived through the years, at times witnessing only a single participant.

The pageant has had its share of successes and failures on the international stage.

Philippine Beauty In PageantsTidbits

MISS Earth Jessica Nicole Trisko (left), returned to Manila with reigning Miss Philippines-Earth Karla Paula Henry, posed for photographers during the press conference and launching of Miss Earth 2008 held at Traders Hotel Manila. PHOTO BY ROY DOMINGO

It’s Pageant Time
Written by C. Mendez Legaspi
for businessmirror.com

Danielle Castano is the complete antithesis of Janina San Miguel. When the beleaguered beauty queen resigned her Miss World title because of family duties, the Binibining Pilipinas first runner-up stepped into San Miguel’s high-heeled shoes. Pageant watchers rejoiced no end. At least, they reasoned, the country won’t be the subject of ridicule because our representative can’t speak English straight. Castano, raised abroad, has a commanding grasp of the language.

A proficiency in English can work wonders, of course. Ruffa Gutierrez and her Little Prince quote came close. Cara Subijano, despite her atrocious gown, cracked the top 10, and Mafae Yunon slipped into the top five thanks also to text votes. But at Miss World, intelligence is hardly a factor in winning. Even at Miss Universe. Have you ever witnessed a UP or Ateneo alumna getting crowned?

EARTH MOTHER

Meanwhile...Karla Paula Henry joined the Binibini contest this year. She cruised into the semis. That’s how far she got. So what’s a beautiful girl going to do? Sign up for the next prestigious pageant, of course! When she competed for the Miss Earth Philippines title, the perky Cebuana won. At a recent press call at Traders Hotel by Shangri-La, Henry was on hand to welcome her new “sister,” the reigning Miss Earth 2007, Jessica Trisko of Canada, who is half-Pinay. The Miss Earth pageant is in full swing as contestants from the four corners of the earth ensconce themselves in the hotel by the bay, which serves as their second home while in the country.

“Karla represents what’s really progressive about the Philippines,” Trisko says of her possible successor, who went with her as the Canadian visited some countries to attend to several ecological activities and environmental projects as part of her duties as Miss Earth. “She has a lot of surprises in store. If she wins, then it’s meant to be. All I can do is give her advice and see what she does with it.”

Miss Earth 2008, the eighth year of the fastest-growing pageant in the world, will be held on November 9 at the Clark Expo Amphitheater, Pampanga, and will be aired over ABS-CBN.

MUTYA IN MY MIND

After the Miss Earth girls complete their swimsuit competition in Puerto Princesa, another bevy of beauties will be in Palawan to lend their overwhelming presence. Contestants from the Ruby Year of Mutya ng Pilipinas will be on the island. It is the first time that the Mutya eliminations and finals night will be held on the same location, a development that delights Mayor Edward Hagedorn. “This is a special moment for Puerto Princesa. Everyone appreciates beauty and ours is a beautiful city. We are happy to host this pageant. This is a strong signal to grab our place in the world of destinations.”

Renee Salud, who has discovered and nurtured the finest beauty queens of our time, heads the screening committee of Mutya, which culminates on December 7, also the fiesta of the city. “I have been with Mutya for six years now. If not for the other pageants, I would not be here today,” the engaging “Mama Renee” said at the press conference to announce a call for contestants.

A wannabe must be a natural-born Pinay (no trannies, please), a high-school graduate, 18 to 25 years old, at least 5'5"—and for aspirants coming from overseas, at least with Pinoy blood (not blood transfusion from a Pinoy, please). “Speaking in Tagalog is not a big issue. Here, we encourage the girls to speak even in their own dialects, but it should not be colloquial or slang, as long as they can express themselves with sense and substance,” Salud emphasized.

A prospective candidate would be wise to visit www.mutyapilipinas.com for more information.

Death of a Beauty Queen: Miss International 1991 Agniezska Kotlarska

10 October 2008

She is Agnieszka Kotlarska, a beauty queen who was given a second life after she backed out from flying a plane that crashed and killed all the people on board but only to surrender her second life two months later after when she was stabbed to death by a stalker.

Agnieszka is the first Polish winner of the Miss international beauty pageants in 1991. She went on to pursue a modeling career in New York for the likes of Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, before returning to Poland to settle in Maślice.

Agnieszka was stabbed to death by a stalker in August 27, 1996. The attack also injured her husband, Jarosław Świątek.

Here is a report of the incident by Maciej Mich, Wrocław - Małgorzata Bąkowska

A Tragic Obsession

Police have arrested an alleged stalker for the murder of 1991's Miss Poland.

Jerzy L. has confessed to killing former 1991 Miss Poland and Miss International, Agnieszka Kotlarska, after stalking her for more than five years.

On Aug. 27, police allege, he approached Kotlarska as she was getting into a car with her husband, Jarosław Świątek, and daughter. Świątek jumped out of the car, the men began to scuffle, and Jerzy L. produced a hunting knife from his knapsack. Kotlarska jumped out of the car when she saw Jerzy L. stab her husband's leg. Jerzy L. has confessed that he then stabbed her four times in the chest. Kotlarska died in the hospital.

After the stabbing, police officers found Jerzy L. in his home. He immediately confessed to killing Kotlarska, saying he was mad with jealousy that the girl of his dreams had married someone else and had "ruined his life." He also told police he always carried the hunting knife and never intended to use it to commit a crime. He faces a sentence ranging from eight years in prison to the death penalty.

Jerzy L. first saw Kotlarska in 1990, when she was modeling. He tried to get a date with her, but she refused. Jerzy L. was persistent: He got her address and phone number and continued pursuing her.

After she won the Miss Poland title in 1991 and married, Kotlarska left for the United States and a career as a fashion model. She modeled for designers including Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein under the name "Aga." Her photographs appeared in Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Playboy.

After three years in the United States, Kotlarska returned to Poland with her husband and daughter to live in a single-family house in the Wrocław district of Maślice. She began appearing in television commercials, and had two film roles pending. Jerzy L. learned Kotlarska's new address and phone number after see her husband's name in one of many press interviews. Allegedly, he started calling again, asking in vain for a meeting, and prowled around her house, hoping to catch a glimpse of her.

Jerzy L. is 36 and a graduate of the Wrocław University of Technology. He works as a computer programmer in a bank. He lives with his parents; his mother says that he was only interested in jogging and computers.

Two months ago, Kotlarska barely escaped death by deciding at the last minute not to fly on TWA Flight 900, which crashed with no survivors off Long Island, New York. Kotlarska's photographer was among the victims.

Kotlarska is the third Polish beauty queen to die in tragic circumstances. In 1957, just after the finals of the Miss Polonia contest, the first runner-up, Krystyna Żyła, fell out of a window at Warsaw's Grand Hotel. In 1994, Magdalena Jaworska, 1984's Miss Polonia, was electrocuted in her own apartment, after dropping a hairdryer into the water while bathing.

Vietnam May Not be Represented in Miss World 2008

09 October 2008

Vietnam is getting little attention lately from the beauty pageant fans all over the world. Thanks to the controversy involving the winner of Miss Vietnam 2008 who apparently did not finish high school. Pageants have a tall order on this qualification. A candidate should at least a high school graduate.

I remember last year, the Philippine representative to Miss World, Margaret Wilson, was initially questioned by some. Apparently, she did not finish high school but it turned she did.

Going back to Miss Vietnam, since the winner Tran Thi Thuy Dung (left picture) does not meet this criteria, Vietnam is in dilemma. They are not sure whether their country will be represented in the Miss World 2008 or not.

It was approved that Vietnams's representative to the Miss Universe 2008 - Nguyen Thuy Lam - which incidentally took place in Vietnam will represent this country in Miss World but because of a commitment with her studies, she can't make it now.

Thuy Lam (right picture) is the first Vietnamese to penetrate a semi-final slot in the Miss Universe pageant but she failed to advance to Top 10. She is one of the only two Asians in the semi-finals along with Miss Japan Hiroko Mima. She was also in the Top 10 Best in National Costume chosen by Vietnamese judges.

Here is the latest news whether Vietnam will be seen in Miss World 1008 pageants or not.

Vietnam may or may not be at Miss World

Elite Vietnam, the company authorized to nominate the country’s contestants to Miss World, said it was unsure whether either one of Vietnam’s two nominees would be chosen as the deadline is almost up and all of the contest’s spots may have already been filled.

The company has nominated the three finalists of Miss Universe Vietnam 2008.

But the event’s first place winner, Nguyen Thuy Lam, has said she is too busy to vie for a spot at Miss World, citing her studies and the upcoming release of a studio album as the reasons.

Miss Universe Vietnam’s first runner-up Vo Hoang Yen and second runner-up Duong Truong Thien Ly have now had their names submitted to Miss World for consideration.

Miss World 2008 will take place November 16 to December 12 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Department of Performing Arts approved Elite’s nomination of the Miss Universe Vietnam winners last Monday.

The body had previously disqualified the winners of Miss Vietnam 2008 from participating in Miss World after Miss Vietnam organizers were accused of violating event regulations by allowing contestants – including the event’s winner Tran Thi Thuy Dung – to participate without a high-school diploma.

2008 Amazing Beauties Philippines

08 October 2008

They are not real ladies just like what you see parading in Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Earth or Miss International.

You have heard it right. These are the contestants of the upcoming 2008 Amazing Beauties Philippines, a search designed for the transvestites and transsexuals.

Take another look at them in a news clip from the Philippines leading television network and know more about them in an article written by Dinna Chung.

Thank You, GMA 7 for this Video

AMAZING BEAUTIES
By: Dinna Chung

WHAT is the essence of a woman? The logical answer is the ability to procreate and ensure the continuity of the human race. For some, being a woman is a state of mind.

Twenty-eight beauties recently competed in the fourth Amazing Philippine Beauties 2006. If beauty is the only requirement for being a female, then these beauties are definitely women.

The pageant actually features transsexuals, transgender people, transvestites and cross-dressers in a grand display of beauty and talent. The grand winner and her court are assured of slots in the Amazing Philippine Theatre Shows, which were inspired by the world-famous performances in Thailand. With the more popular performers in the shows getting as much as $100 in tips a night from tourists for photo-ops, the pageant is the most prestigious, one of its kind in the country. The grand winner will also compete in Thailand for the title of Miss International Queen next year.

Patricia Montecarlo, a statuesque former entertainer in Japan, bagged a number of special awards, including Best in Long Gown and Swimsuit, and was crowned Ms. Amazing Philippine Beauties 2006.

“I joined the pageant for the prestige,” said Montecarlo, who does bit roles in movies and has a furniture business.

The 25-year-old beauty said she started dressing up as a woman when she was 18 years old.

“My family is very supportive. I never had problems with acceptance,” she added.

Montecarlo did not need to join Ms. Amazing Philippine Beauties to compete in the Thailand pageant. A sponsor is actually paying her way to join and compete alongside the 2005 winner Armela Esguerra. This happened before she even signed up for the Philippine pageant.

“I really joined because it is very prestigious and recognized internationally,” said Montecarlo. “I want my business and career to be stable so I don’t have to work abroad anymore.”

Montecarlo is the typical Ms. Amazing Philippine Beauties contestant: beautiful, accomplished, articulate and talented. Most of the “girls” who joined the contest are college students or graduates. One of the semi-finalists is a third year Sociology student at the University of the Philippines. Their appearance is superior even by biological females’ standards. Most of them have careers and supportive families and boyfriends who love and accept them for what they are.

Amazing Philippine Theatre was established in 2001 to produce the “Amazing Philippine Show,” a theatrical variety show that features Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and Korean folk dances, song numbers, comedy acts, among others, performed by the most beautiful transvestites in the Philippines. Thailand pioneered variety shows featuring transvestites with Alcazar and Tiffany in Pattaya and Calypso and Mambo in Bangkok. These shows attract tourists from different parts of the world.

“The reason we put up this production is that we believe in the talent and skills of Filipino artists in acting, singing, dancing, stage production, lighting and costume design,” said Lee Jong Hyun, the theatre’s chairman.

The company employs 147 workers in various department housed within the Manila Film Center.

Lee said the company believes that the tourism industry will thrive even during these economically unpredictable times. In the past year, the shows have been watched by 280,000. Koreans are the shows’ biggest fans at 80 percent. Chinese, Japanese and local tourists also watch the shows.

The theatre has staged the pageant for the past four years in cooperation with the Pasay City Tourism and Cultural Development Office in an effort to attract tourists and allow transvestites and transgender people to realize their full potential.

“One of the objectives of the pageant is to uplift the way people look at gay beauty pageants,” said Lee. “We want society to accept transvestites and transgender people as productive individuals.

Pinay beauties' edge over Latin ladies: Warmth

I have been observing how beauty pageants are being taken for the last 20 years. I have heard lots of backstage stories of most of the contestants. It is countless. One thing I have observed is the diversion of what could be the original purpose of the pageant which is to build friendship and camaraderie among the participating countries. It is supposed to be for fun but things aren't the same nowadays.

Beauty pageants, though this are really contests, has reached a new dimension. This is being taken uber now. Contestants usually bitch other contestants not to mention also the fact that pageants fans insult, bash, and criticize heavily every candidates and even supporters of a particular country. Racist comments are thrown to each and everyone. This is pathetic. The purpose is now defeated.

I don't see something wrong in being so competitive but not to the point of bitching around. A friendly atmosphere should always be observed since this is one of the reasons for the staging of the pageant. Candidates should still learn to befriend each and everyone.

I want to share an interesting article about an interview of the three Binibining Pilipinas winners this year. Miss Philippines-Universe Jennifer Barrientos (who competed in Vietnam last Miss Universe pageant), Miss Philippines-World Danielle Castano (who replaced Janina San Miguel as Philippine representative to the Miss World 2008 pageant in South Africa) and Miss Philippines-International Patricia Fernandez had an interview with a Philippines local television show.

In the interview, Jennifer Barrientos talked about the difference of Filipina beauties to other beauties especially the South Americans. She said her contemporaries are friendlier to their fellow candidates.

Pinay beauties' edge over Latin ladies: Warmth

For years now Latin ladies have dominated the world of international beauty pageants but Filipino beauties are unfazed.

Reigning Binibining (Bb) Pilipinas Universe Jennifer Barrientos, Bb. Pilipinas World Danielle Castaño and Bb. Pilipinas International Patricia Fernandez said Filipino beauties are unique.

In an interview on “Mornings@ANC,” the three women said Filipinas have their own style.

“We show more warmth and friendliness,” Fernandez said.

It is not easy being a beauty queen though. Before they can represent the country in international competitions, the winners of the prestigious beauty contest are required to undergo rigorous trainings.

Barrientos emphasized the importance of preparing for the competitions.

“The secret is how you prepare and how you keep the power within. It’s how you concentrate, keep your focus,” she said.

Castaño, on the other hand, said: “Just finish school first before you go into something like beauty pageants and then that’s when you focus. If you want something and just keep dreaming, just be strong and you’ll succeed.”

The hard work though pays off even if the country’s representatives fail to bring home the crown.

Barrientos, who represented the country in Miss Universe 2008 held in Vietnam, for instance, said because of the experience she got to meet new friends from other countries.

“The whole experience was very fun. I got to meet new people, new friends from other countries. And I got to experience all of the things that other beauty queens experienced,” she said.

Fernandez and Castaño are set to compete in Macau and South Africa, respectively, in the coming months.

“I really pray that I will be able to bring honor to our country but, of course, I could only prepare,” said Fernandez who is leaving the country next week for the Miss International competition in November.

For Castaño, she said she has been undergoing trainings to prepare her for the Miss World pageant in December.

Ever wondered what’s up with beauty queen hand wave? The three beauties said it is for picture taking.

New Colored Video of Miss Universe 1969

07 October 2008

I would like to share you this video of the 1969 Miss Universe pageant won by Gloria Diaz of the Philippines. The reason I have been sharing this is because the video's not in black and white. This is a part of a documentary shown on TV. It is not clear where this was shown but the uploader on youtube looks like from Thailand. I saw Thai writings in the description along with the video.

This is the first win by the Philippines and the third win by an Asian. Japan's Akiko Kojima won in 1959 and in 1965, Apasra Hongsakula of Thailand won the title.

This is also the first pageant where question and answer was introduced.

One thing I have observed, the finalists are all blondes and towering in heights except for Japan and Philippines. But in the end, it was a triumph by the 5'5" exotic Gloria Diaz.

What made her win the pageant? Is it her witty answer to the final question. I admit she showed intellectual superiority and that could be the reason.

Death of a Beauty Queen: Miss Sweden Hellevi Rombin

She is really stunning. Beauty superiority is written all over her face. The woman in the picture is Hellevi Rombin, the first Swedish winner of the Miss Universe pageant and the second Scandinavian winner after Finland's Armi Kuusela.

But where is she now? Does anyone know?

Hellevi Rombin Schine is gone, but as long as beauty is celebrated, her legacy will be remembered.

That is her tomb now.

Hellevi Rombin died in a plane crash in June 19, 1996 (Many are actually writing she died in June 20, 1996). She was on board a privately owned aircraft piloted by her 32 year-old son. She and her son died together with her second husband, US former senator David Schine in Los Angeles in Southern California.

Her death was overshadowed by that of her husband, who was a successful and controversial man, but pageant fans remembered her as Sweden's Hellevi Rombin, Miss Universe 1955.

She was 64. Her husband was 69 and their son, Berndt, was 35.

Let's take a look about her short background before and after winning the crown in 1955.

The second Scandinavian delegate to win the title, Hellevi was a very athletic individual. After her reign as Miss Universe, she went on with a movie career in Hollywood and eventually married a movie produced.

Hellevi Rombin was an extraordinary athlete as well as a stunning woman. She was the Swedish national decathlon champion before being crowned Miss Sweden. Photographs of her as Miss Universe are still striking for the warmth they seem to exude. In some, she appears almost angelic, reminiscent of her fellow Swede Ingrid Bergman playing Joan of Arc.

Ms. Rombin married Schine in 1957, and they had six children. He was at the center of the great McCarthy controversy of the 1950s, allied with Sen. Joseph McCarthy and lawyer Roy Cohn in political warfare that eventually destroyed McCarthy's career. Schine then went on to success in the motion picture business, serving as executive producer of "The French Connection" in 1971. (Cohn, coincidentally, later became a confidant of the young Donald Trump.)

Below is the complete list of the courts of Hellevi:

1st runner-up Maribel Arrieta EL SALVADOR
2nd runner-up Maureen Hingert CEYLON
3rd runner-up Margut Nunke GERMANY
4th runner-up Keiko Takahashi JAPAN

SEMI-FINALISTS

Hilda Isabel Sarli Gorrindo ARGENTINA
Nicole De Mayer BELGIUM
Emilia Barreto Correa Lima BRAZILl
Cathy Diggles CANADA
Margaret Rowe ENGLAND
Maria del Rosario Molina Chacon GUATEMALA
Pastera Pagan Valenzuela HONDURAS
Solveig Borstad NORWAY
Carlene King Johnson USA
Carmen Susana Duijm Zubillaga VENEZUELA

Venezuela's Carmen Zubillaga, a semi-finalist, went on to win the Miss World 1955 crown later on in the year. This is also one of the few years we saw Sri Lanka, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Belgium as strong competitiors.

Death of a Beauty Queen : Miss Philippines Ma. Rosario Silayan

06 October 2008

Is it my eyes or one of the gowns turn green and then blue alternately? But this picture is taken on the same time.

The pictures you have just seen above are the Top 5 of the Miss Universe 1980 in Seoul, South Korea. There were 69 contestants at that time from all over the world. Miss USA Shawn Weatherly snatched the crown leaving Miss Scotland Linda Gallagher, Miss New Zealand Delyse Nottle, Miss Philippines Ma. Rosario Chat Rivera Silayan and Miss Sweden Eva Brigitta Anderson as the 1st to 4th runners up respectively.

Now, the one wearing green or blue gown was Miss Philippines Ma. Rosario Rivera Silayan. Can someone uncover the real color of the gown?

Though Miss USA won that year's crown, it was Miss Philippines who snatched the heart of the audience and of the world. But this is also the coming of the end days of the Philippines as the force to reckon with in the world of beauty pageants. The years prior to this pageant, the world seen how the Philippines tried to revolutionize the pageantry with never-before-seen gowns. This is the time Miss Philippines introduced this kind of gown better known as the mermaid gown.

This is a creation of a famous Filipino designer, Renee Salud. The gown proved to be a hit.

During that pageant, Chat Silayan was a crowd favorite. The crowd even sang a song for her. And do you know that song? It was a Happy Birthday song. Yes, Miss Philippines was celebrating her 20th birthday at that time. But today, it is very sad, Chat Silayan had joined now our Creator. She died of a cancer.

This is my second blog entry about a death of former contestants of any pageant known to us. Do you remember when I wrote about Miss India 1996 Nafisa Joseph suicide? Expect me to bring to you every now and then stories of beauty queens who have left our world for eternity.

"Death of a Beauty Queen" will be the title I gonna use for every entry about the death of any beauty queens.

Let's read an article written for us by Ricky Lo of the Philippine Star about the passing of Ma. Rosario Rivera Silayan.

CHAT SILAYAN SLIPS QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT

MANILA, APRIL 25, 2006 (STAR) FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo - She closed her eyes Saturday night and she never opened them again.

That’s how Michael "Mike" Bailon described how his wife Chat Silayan, 1980 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, slipped quietly into the night. She was declared dead at past seven o’clock Sunday (April 23) at the St. Luke’s Medical Center where she had been confined for almost three months during which Chat waged an unflinching battle against colon cancer with stoic determination. Like Rio Diaz, also a beauty queen (1977 Mutya ng Pilipinas) before she joined showbiz, Chat lost the battle but won the war. She was 46.

"She was lucid until she closed her eyes for the last time," Mike told Funfare during an interview at the Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park, Makati City, yesterday afternoon. Chat’s body, lying in a sealed white casket, was brought there at six o’clock yesterday morning. "We were talking and, as usual, she was calling me Mikey as was her wont when she was making lambing. Then, we prayed together. After a while, she closed her eyes and that was it."

Chat’s battle with the Big C started in April 2004 when she underwent surgery on her colon, one foot of which was cut. For a while, Chat felt relief, only for the pain to recur a year later. Her doctors told her she had only one year to live.

"Actually," recalled Mike, a member, like Chat, of the Alabang New Life Center since December 1992 when they got married, "Chat began to be bothered by a pain in her lower back as early as l999. She thought it was due to a slipped disc which was closely monitored by the doctor. The pain went away but it came back in 2004 when she was diagnosed to have colon cancer, first stage. A year later, she was opened up again but the cancer had moved to her ovary, fourth stage. Then, it spread to her liver and other organs."

At first, according to Mike, Chat asked the usual question cancer-stricken patients usually do, "Why me?" But through the long months that she suffered, she became resigned to her fate – you know, Lord, Thy will be done!

She had been on liquid diet since January this year, often taking Gerber.

Ma. Rosario Silayan in real life (the daughter of the late theater-movie actor Vic Silayan), Chat became an overnight star when she won as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe in 1980, the same year she represented the country in the Miss Universe Pageant in South Korea, finishing third runner-up to Miss USA Shawn Weatherly. It was a memorable gift for Chat who was celebrating her 20th birthday that day (July 8).

Noted "beauty expert" Felix Manuel, "The host, Bob Barker, asked the audience to sing happy birthday to Chat who became an instant favorite when she thanked the crowd in Korean."

She joined showbiz soon after. After only a few years, she went to the US to take up acting lessons.

"She was a good person and a good friend," said Melanie Marquez, 1979 Bb. Pilipinas-International and that same year’s Miss Intrernational, Chat’s bosom buddy who was also in the States at that time pursuing a modeling career. "When I was in L.A., she asked her friend to take care of me. When she went naman to San Francisco, I asked my friend to take care of her," added Melanie who was among the first to rush to St. Luke’s Medical Center the night Chat died.

Besides Mike, Chat is survived by her three children, Victor, 17 (from her relationship with an Italian director); and Timothy, 12, and Michaela, 11 (with Mike).

(Her remains lie in state at the Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park, Makati City, at the same chapel where Rio Diaz’s cremated remains lay. She’ll be buried at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City on Saturday, April 29.)

Danielle Castaño begins work on her way to win the country's first Miss World crown

03 October 2008

Danielle Kirsten Muriel Castaño may well be defined above the average definition of beautiful, as she exudes confidence that complements an irresistible combination of substance and style. Danielle is the newly-appointed official representative to the Miss World 2008 pageant to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, this December.

"It is with great honor that I receive the appointment bestowed upon me by the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. [BPCI] to become the official representative to the 2008 Miss World beauty pageant," she says. When asked about the new responsibility she is about to take on, Danielle expresses her excitement. "I am resolving to make the country proud as I continue the quest to win for the Philippines its first Miss World crown," she says, as she beams yet another confident smile.

One thing that Danielle is most proud of about herself is the fact that she knows that she is a very strong and responsible person, capable of pursuing her goals by being independent. This 19-year-old charmer was raised in the country's shoe capital, Marikina, but is currently residing in Quezon City.

The eldest of three sisters, Danielle also has a soft spot for children, particularly the sick and abused. According to her, she wants to campaign for their rights as part of her advocacy.

"I want to be remembered by people as someone who did something socially significant, and not just become another pretty face," she admits. She adds that she wants to carry across a message of hope for underprivileged children around the world, should she be lucky to take home the first Miss World crown for the Philippines.

Danielle was the crowd favorite in the Binibining Pilipinas 2008 pageant, bagging five special awards from the major sponsors.

Known as the country's most prestigious pageant with four decades of glorious existence, Binibining Pilipinas is responsible for sending the official Philippine representatives to the three different international pageants recognizing excellence beyond beauty worldwide.

Danielle is currently undergoing a series of rigorous training in catwalk skills and personality development with topnotch experts, but is definitely ready to make the country proud as she competes against 180 official representatives in the Miss World 2008 pageant to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
