Miss Philippines-World 2008 Passes Her Crown

What is the real deal?

This is the deeper question to the reported backing out of Janina San Miguel, Philippine representative to the Miss World 2008 pageant to be held in South Africa later this year.

Janina became a household name when she humbled herself during her national pageant, Binibining Pilipinas, for "murdering the English language" at the final question and answer portion. She buckled and totally gave in to the unadaptive audience. It was probably the lowest point of her life but she managed to stand up.

You can watch the video by clicking this link on youtube.

Janina won the top honor by grabbing the top crown in the pageant, the Bibinibing Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) - World in March 2008. She was supposed to compete in South Africa this September but yesterday, it was announced she quit the title. The reason is because of the death of her grandfather.

The first runner up, Danielle Castano, will replace Janina.

This could have been the best opportunity for Janina to redeem herself during the Miss World pageant. By watching her videos and photos, this girl has what it takes to become a winner. Her beauty is exotic and with proper training she could have nailed down the competition.

What makes me sick is the reality that her people was never supportive of her instead they lambasted the poor girl 24/7. No doubt, the experience was a traumatic for Janina. The criticism is too much too handle for a 17 year old lady. Instead of helping her, she is figuratively pulled down by torturing her mentally, spiritually and psychologically.

I strongly believe Janina could have thought of using the opportunity to strike revenge by proving to the Filipino people she can deliver. At one time she was determined but the constant name calling from abusive beauty pageants fans put her down. She was beaten up - psychologically. She gave up. She succumbed under pressure. She got something that will forever haunt her - an incident that demoralized not only her but also her whole family.

I don't understand why the Filipino people put emphasis too much on the English language. Speaking the language fluently is a not a basis of intelligence. Janina is a Filipino who does speak not English but her mother tongue. So what is the big deal of requiring her to speak in English if she speaks Tagalog?

I feel for Janina. I fully understand her but I will not understand people who see putting a pinch of salt in an open wound something funny. May I ask the detractors of Janina. Can you speak Japanese or German or French or Afrikaans? Most of you don't but the world is not laughing at you. The world understands you. Why can't you give the same respect to a 17 year lady who does not speak English?

But what is the real deal here? Did Janina really quit or she was forced to resign. Did Janina really give in to pressure or is it the organizer who gave in to the pressure?

Whatever the real score is, something is clear here. There is a deeper reason other than the loss of a grandfather.

I am including a news on this which I copied from this link.

Bb. Pilipinas-World 2008 Janina San Miguel has decided to quit as the Philippines' representative to the Miss World 2008 beauty pageant that will be held on December 14 at Johannesburg, South Africa.

In a statement sent to the press by the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) earlier tonight, September 29, San Miguel cited the recent death of her grandfather as the reason of her decision to back out from the competition.

The statement read: "The untimely demise of her grandfather, among other personal reasons, has caused her undue stress, thus hindering her from fulfilling her duties for the said title... BPCI wishes to express its gratitude to Ms. San Miguel for this act of graciousness and concern for the country. They also wish her well in her future endeavors."

As per the rules and regulations of the BPCI, Binibining Pilipinas 2008 first runner-up Danielle Castaño will take over Janina's duties as the country's representative to the Miss World 2008.

Janina made the headlines earlier this year during the Bb. Pilipinas competition when she fumbled in the question-and-answer portion. The critics lambasted her for "murdering the English language" while some found enjoyment watching the video of that particular moment in YouTube. But in the end, she still went home with the Bb. Pilipinas-World crown.

The Philippines has yet to win the Miss World crown. The closest we got to the crown was when Evangeline Pascual placed 1st runner-up in 1973. Actress Ruffa Gutierrez became 2nd runner-up in 1993.

Binibining Pilipinas First Runner up, Danielle Castano, replaces Janina San Miguel as Philippine representative to the Miss World 2008 pageant.

Recycled Gowns and National Costumes for Misses Philippines

When the Philippine representatives to international pageants started to dress by a Colombian famous designer, the Filipino beauty pageant fans started to cry dissatisfaction as manifested in almost all beauty pageant forums. Obviously, they are not happy with the thought of having a foreigner dressing their own representative. For them, it is a clear insult to the ingenuity of the Filipino people. The abundance of local talents who have better gown creations and ideas is put into waste.

The Colombian designer is Alfredo Barraza, a long time friend of the Philippine National Director for Misses Universe, World and International - Stella Marquez Sawadzky Araneta. Stella Araneta is a native of Colombia who became the first winner of Miss International in 1960. This explains her connection to Barraza.

One of the reasons of the clamour is the fact that they are just recycling the gowns and national costumes of the Misses Philippines every year. I said this is a fact because I myself seen these recycled gowns and national costumes.

This is Karen Loren Agustin during the 2002 Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico. The gown looks good on Karen who also carried the gown amazingly.

In 2006, in Los Angeles, California, Lia Andrea Ramos wore the same gown in one of the Miss Universe functions.

That same year (2006), it was again wore by Denille Lou Valmonte during the Miss International pageant in Japan.

After barely two months, it was again seen at the 2006 Miss World in Poland. This time it was Ana Maris Igpit who took it center stage.

Moving on to national costume, this is Miriam Quiambao during the 1999 Miss Universe pageant in Trinidad and Tobago. She ended up first runner up.

In 2001 in Japan during the Miss International pageant, Maricarl Tolosa sported it. She went on unplaced.

In Panama during the 2003 Miss Universe pageant, Carla Gay Balingit wowed the audience with her pineapple-inspired costume. Let's reverse it this time. She was unplaced.

In 2005 during the Miss International pageant in Japan, Precious Lara Quigaman wowed the judges with same national costume and she went on to win the title as Miss International 2005.

Also in that same year (2005) at the Miss Universe pageant in Bangkok, Thailand, Gionna Jimenez Cabrera delighted the universe with a Maria Clara-inspired costume. She made it to the Top 5 Best in National Costume.

That following year in the Miss International 2006 in Japan, Denille Lou Valmonte did not only wear the infamous red gown initially wore by Karen Loren Agustin but she also tried this national costume wore by Gionna Cabrera in the Miss Universe e2005 .

Record Holders of Miss Universe Pageant

Let's take a look at these three beauty queens who had the highest scores in the history of the Miss Universe pageant with judges' scores revealed on TV. Who is the highest in Swimsuit, Evening Gown or Final Night's Preliminary Interview?

The gorgeous Carolina Gomez of Colombia sashayed in the elegant evening gown number in Manila, Philippines in 1994 earning her an average of 9.897.

The brilliant and eloquent Lara Dutta of India wowed everyone in her replies to the initial interview of semifinalists in Nicosia, Cyprus in 2000. This earned her a near perfect score of 9.95.

In the swimsuit category, a previous record of 9.85 swimsuit average score by Veruzka Ramirez of Venezuela (1998, Hawaii, USA) was broken when the breathtaking Oxana Federova of Russia began her phenomenal walk during the swimsuit competition in Puerto Rico (2002). Oxana got a whopping average score of 9.88!

Where is Minorka Mercado Now?

Have you ever wondered where is Minorka Mercado now?

Minorka is 1993 Miss Venezuela who represented this beauty superpower in 1994 Miss Universe pageant in Manila. She was the tallest candidate in that year's competition at 6'1". She was also the favourite to win the crown but she ended up second runner up to Miss India Sushmita Sen and Miss Colombia Carolina Gomez Correa. Sen was the winner and Gomez Correa was the first runner up.

After that pageant in Manila, there were no more news about her. Recently, I saw a picture of her as a presenter of a show in the US.

Today, Minorka Mercado is active in hosting events and functions all over the world. Photo on the left is of her hosting last year's Hispanic Choice Awards. She is now based in Philadelphia and is married to Peangelo Miranda and has a daughter with him. She also hosted the Latinas United for the Cure luncheon at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.

Miss Earth 2007 is Insulted in Puerto Rico

I came to know last month that the current Miss Earth, Filipino-Canadian who represented Canada was in Puerto Rico for pageant-related activities. Jessica Trisko was photographed very happy in that small US territory in the Caribbean.

I happened to sneaked to Critical Beauty and read an article about the trip which turned out to be unhappy and very insulting.

I wonder what is the reaction of the Miss Earth Organization to this incident and what are the measures they have taken to prevent such thing to happen again in the future.

I am republishing here the article I have taken at Critical Beauty written by Rafael Delfin or better known as Rafa. (Link is provided)

CRITICAL SAVIOR: Jessica Trisko, Miss Earth 2007, visited Puerto Rico two weeks ago, but her stay in the Enchanted Isle was not completely enchanting. Jessica had been invited by Reinas de Puerto Rico Organization (RPRO) whose president, Edwin Rosario, is the Puerto Rico franchise owner of Miss Earth. Jessica - who was supposed to be a guest - was told by "Janet" - RPRO's public relations director - that she had to pay for her own airfare and accomodations with the promise that she would have a memorable time in Puerto Rico. However, when Jessica arrived at the airport in San Juan on August 23 (Saturday), no one from RPRO met her. Even worse, she had not been provided by RPRO with proper accomodations, food or security for the first three days.

Noemi Melendez, the president of the Miss Cuba Organization who sends Cuban delegates to Miss Earth - and a good friend of Rosario's - had already known that Rosario was not coming to meet Jessica, so she called CB's Héctor Joaquín Colón González, photo, for immediate assistance. Hector arrived first at the airport, followed by Noemi. Jessica had to spend her first three nights in the house of Noemi's friend. The following day (Sunday) in the town of Loiza, Jessica attended an event supposedly in her honor, but when she, Hector and Noemi arrived at the venue, there were only seven people in attendance and that the activity was limited to a performance by a folkloric dance group and a local writer.

Since RPRO did not send any make-up artist or hairstylist to attend to Jessica, Héctor attempted to solicit assistance from stylist Davidonne and fashion designer Carlos Alberto. However, when Rosario found out about Héctor's good Samaritan deeds, he called Héctor on Tuesday (Aug. 26th) and began threatening him with a lawsuit. Rosario also told Héctor that Jessica could not use the services of either Davidonne or Carlos Alberto. Rosario was supposed to make a new dress for Jessica that she would wear when she gives up her Miss Earth crown, but Rosario never took Jessica's measurements. When Rosario offered Jessica a dress, it was made of polyester, badly designed, and had stains in front. Rosario also failed to accompany Jessica to the Bacardi Company offices. Eventually, Rosario was able to provide lodging to Jessica, in a two-star hotel called Diamond Palace in Condado, but Jessica only stayed for a day and a half because she couldn't stand the substandard conditions. Héctor was kind enough to receive Jessica in his apartment during the rest of her stay.

In its message board, RPRO posted some vicious comments about Héctor, calling him a no-good, unethical pageant coach with a big ego, and that no one in Puerto Rico ever hires him to train local queens. On Monday (Sept. 1), Rosario appeared on the local TV program "No Te Duermas" and badmouthed Héctor, claiming that Jessica was staying in an apartment filled with "bugs, cockroaches and rats." Nothing could be farther from the truth. Jessica's claims of mistreatment by Rosario are supported by Noemi herself. Noemi wrote to the project manager of Carousel Productions (which produces Miss Earth), Gemina Mayo (with copies to Jessica and Héctor), informing Gemina that she "was so disappointed on how Reinas de PR handled Jessica" and that "Edwin [Rosario] did not take care of Jessica during her stay." Noemi also regrets to have recommended Rosario for the Puerto Rican franchise of Miss Earth. According to Héctor, a friend of Natalie Cuevas, Miss Puerto Rico Earth, advised him that Natalie had been told by Rosario that she has to pay for her own airfare to Manila and that he was charging her US$600 for the franchise fee, even though it is free.

I have known Héctor for nearly five years and he has never disappointed me as a friend and a colleague. Rosario's claim that Héctor is not respected in Puerto Rican pageantry is pure hogwash. May I remind Rosario that Héctor has worked with numerous big-name local designers and stylists (Carlos Alberto, José Karlo, Verona, René Cruz, just to name a few), has collaborated with the Miss Puerto Rico Universe and Miss World Puerto Rico organizations, has either prepared or promoted numerous young women who have competed in Miss Puerto Rico Universe, Miss World Puerto Rico, Miss Puerto Rico International and Miss Puerto Rico Earth, has very good relationship with the Miss Universe Organization, has been hired again this year by the Miss Bahamas World Organization, and will soon travel to Bolivia for Reina Hispanoamericana, to Manila for Miss Earth and to South Africa for Miss World. And lastly, CB would not have a Spanish-language edition if it were not for Héctor's drive, hard work and utter professionalism - something that Rosario should imitate.

Miss Universe Trivia

"We, the young women of the universe, believe people everywhere are seeking peace, tolerance and mutual understanding. We pledge to spread this message in every way we can, wherever we go.”

Those lines are the Miss Universe own creed and it is read during the pageant from 1960 to 1990. Did you know that? We'll if you haven't known anything about the pageant, let's start with these trivias I have collected from different papers and blogs.

1. Miss Universe 1957, Gladys Zender from Peru was the youngest Miss Universe in history. She was 17 when she won the title.

2. At 64 inches (1.63 m) tall, Miss Thailand 1965, Apasra Hongsakula is the shortest Miss Universe ever crowned.

3. Amparo Muñoz of Spain, Miss Universe 1974, was resigned shortly before her reign ended and did not crown her successor, but she was not formally replaced. Amparo’s runner-up, Helen Morgan of Wales, went on to represent the United Kingdom in the Miss World pageant later that same year. She won, only to resign a few days later when she was revealed to be an unwed mother.

4. 2002’s winner, Oxana Fedorova of Russia, became the first Miss Universe who officially did not finish her reign, making first runner-up Justine Pasek the first Panamanian to hold the title. Fedorova was crowned in Puerto Rico in mid-May, and was replaced by Pasek in late September. It is unclear whether Fedorova was fired for failure to perform her duties (the official version), or chose to resign because she had not expected the heavy workload.

5. In 1999, Botswana sent Mpule Kwelagobe as its first ever delegate to the pageant and she won the title.

6. In 2007, Riyo Mori of Japan was crowned in Mexico City, Mexico in another controversial competition. All ten finalists were brunettes. When Miss Mexico failed to make the final cut, the crowd loudly booed Miss USA who did pass despite falling over in the evening gown competition. Interestingly, two delegates who fell wearing their evening gowns advanced to the final question round. They were Miriam Quiambao, Miss Philippines 1999 who tripped and gracefully recovered during the preliminaries; and Rachel Smith, Miss USA 2007 who slipped during the evening gown competition. Quiambao managed to place as first runner-up while Smith ended up as 4th runner-up.

6. There are only ten winners from Asia. Most of these winners represented four countries from East and Southeast Asia, each country having two titleholders each. They are Akiko Kojima and Riyo Mori of Japan in 1959 and 2007, Gloria Diaz and Margarita Moran of the Philippines in 1969 and 1973 respectively, Apasra Hongsakula and Porntip Nakhirunkanok of Thailand in 1965 and 1988, and Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta of India in 1994 and 2000. The two other winners were from Western Asia, Georgina Rizk of Lebanon in 1971 and Rina Messinger of Israel in 1976.

7. Miss Universe 2000, Lara Dutta’s (India) finalist interview was the highest individual score in any category in the history of the Miss Universe contest, as her perfect interview saw a majority of the judges giving her the maximum 9.99 mark. It was the last year such scores were televised until 2007.

8. The Philippines has won the Miss Photogenic award seven times (including a back-to-back and a three-peat), followed by the UK and Puerto Rico, both with five. Puerto Rico won its five awards during a six-year period (1999-2004, did not win in 2000).

9. Four Miss Universe winners were awarded Miss Photogenic: Margareta Arvidsson (Sweden, 1966), Margarita Moran (Philippines, 1973), Janelle Commissiong (Trinidad/Tobago, 1977) and Denise Quiñones (Puerto Rico, 2001)

10. Miss Universe 1996, Alicia Machado, of Venezuela, was warned to be possibly dethroned by the organization because she exceeded the maximum weight required during her reign, but the requirement was not enforced.

11. Miss Guam 1999, Trisha Heflin, was disqualified from the pageant that year for being pregnant, a report initially denied by officials in Guam. Finalist Mpule Kwelagobe’s final question on the night of the live telecast was whether she thought a Miss Universe who became pregnant should be allowed to continue her reign, to which she responded that she should, since being pregnant was a sign of femininity, which Miss Universe stands for. Her answer to this controversial question would meet with the approval of the audience, as evidenced by the applause she received, and would earn her the title that night.

BLOGGER NOTE: In the picture is the dethroned 2002 Miss Universe winner from Russia, Oxana Federova during the swimsuit competition in Puerto Rico. She registered so far the highest score in this category never achieved by any beauty queens as par as Miss Universe is concerned. She garnenerd a score of 9.88.

Miss Malaysia Universe Reacts to Beauty In Pageants

I made an article about the blog of the current Miss Malaysia-Universe Levy Li Su Lin when someone tipped me about it. Click it here for reference of the article. The purpose of that blog entry about her was just to crack a joke among my readers. Someone who happens to be a reader of Levy's blog tipped also the Malaysian beauty queen about what I have wrote. I teasingly titled my article as "Miss Malaysia is a Lesbian? Miss Mexico is her "Boyfriend"?" Definitely, that was a joke only.

Then I was surprised when I recieved a comment from her. I immediately sent her an e-mail and apoligized if ever I have hurt her. Like a real beauty queen, she showed me her class and poise as hse said it was humurous and funny.

Levy Li is indeed a sweet person. She is kind and I am hoping to get an interview from her so watch out for my next updates.

Now, Levy answered the questions in the title of that infamous blog entry in the form of a comment. I am publishing it as a separate blog entry to show how classy and poised Miss Levy Li Su Lin is.

Hi there. So happened I was linked to this site. Anyway dropping bits of my point of view. As a neutral public reader, I say you did a great job on this post. As Levy Li, Miss Malaysia Universe, Shouldn't I be offended? Well, I don't get offended easily as I always look into things through their positive values instead of negative ones and with no doubt, this is indeed a very creative writing and credits have to be given. Reading this post actually brightens up my day. Well done. But through this, it has enlighten me that I have to choose my words carefully before posting it up. hahaha. Anyway thanks for following up my blog too.

Oh ya. To complete your questionnaire.

Miss Malaysia is a Lesbian?

"A lesbian is a woman who is romantically and sexually attracted only to other women but in my case, that don't trigger me and I can never be able to go against my strong attraction towards my opposite sex *lol* "

Mexico is her "Boyfriend"?

To be my boy friend, the main and first qualification has to be my opposite sex "male". If she was a "he" instead then I would never know. hahaha. Therefore my interpretation of boyfriend in this is definitely my bestfriend instead.

Cheers
Levy Li
Thank you Levy Li for visiting my blog. More power to you.

First Brazilian Miss Earth, Prsicilla Meirelles, Talks About her Boyfriend

Priscilla Meirelles is the first Brazilian beauty to win the Miss Earth crown in 2004. This is a significant win for Brazil because it made this big South American country in the history of beauty pageants as the only country to win the titles from the four biggest beauty competitions on earth - Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Earth and Miss International.

Priscilla is not only Miss Earth 2004 but she is also Miss Globe 2003.

Today, she is now based in the Philippines, the country where she won her title. She is currently dating a Filipino actor, John Estrada.

In this interview by Ricky Lo for The Philippine Star, Priscilla and John talk about their relationship and their future plans as couple.

The article was copied directly from The Philippine Star. Let's take a look.

A Simple Love Story
Entertainment
CONVERSATIONS With Ricky Lo
The Philippine Star
Sunday, December 2, 2007

In a late ’60s Philippine Free Press article by Quijano de Manila (Nick Joaquin), British hippie journalist Caroline Kennedy (who later married and divorced artist Bencab) dismissed Filipino men as “lousy lovers,” pricking the ego of the Pinoy macho. Of course, Kennedy (namesake of JFK’s daughter) was talking about, uh, bedtime ability but she stirred a hornet’s nest just the same, prompting irate Pinoy-male Free Press readers to tell her to, why not, try the type who worked at the North/South Harbors and the National Penitentiary.

In fact, Filipino men are great, romantic lovers whose winning (victorious!) ways extend far beyond the four corners of the bedroom.

Didn’t a Filipino Romeo, the late Virgilio Hilario, marry the first Miss Universe (1952), Armi Kuusela (of Finland)?

Didn’t another Filipino, Jorge Araneta, also marry the first Miss International (1962), Stella Marquez Zawadski (of Colombia)?

And there’s also Jose Faustino who won and brought to the altar Angela Filmer of Malaysia, the first Miss Asia (1965, sponsored by the Philippine Cycling Association and not officially recognized as an edition of the Miss Asia-Pacific Quest which started in 1968).

Now, will Brazil’s Priscilla Meirelles, 2004 Miss Earth (and Miss Globe the previous year), join this distinguished Roll of Honor?

As showbiz-watchers know, Priscilla is John Estrada’s new flame. She stands 5’10” and is very charming, always smiling, an all-natural beauty (not even an inch of her body has been enhanced). Her voice has a musical quality. Her warmth and friendliness put at ease people she’s meeting for the first time, like she did when Conversations sat down with her and John at Cheesecake Etcetera (Greenhills Promenade) one drizzly Wednesday afternoon.

They came in holding hands, making heads turn. I told Priscilla, who is as simpatica as any Latina, that she reminded me of Catherine Zeta-Jones (whom I met face-to-face, with co-star Antonio Banderas, during the Hollywood junket for The Legend of Zorro in 2005), Priscilla showed only a slight sign of flattery, saying, “Is that so?” She speaks very good English. (Her native tongue is Portuguese; John, who hails from Basilan, speaks Chabacano which sounds interestingly like Portuguese and Spanish.)

It wasn’t love at first sight for the sweethearts as you will know by and by. Theirs is, well, a simple love story that knows no cultural barriers.

How did you meet and fall in love?

Priscilla (Addressing John): Would you like to tell him?

John (To Priscilla): No, he wants to hear it from you.

Priscilla: We first met in 2004 when I was Miss Earth, in a restaurant. He was with some people who, I guessed, were celebrities. After several months. We met again after that.”

Of course, at that time, you were both committed to somebody else. (Priscilla to Marc Nelson and John to Vanessa del Bianco).

Priscilla: Then we met again for the third time last January.

At that time, you were both free. Two right people meeting at the right time.

Priscilla: Exactly! He told me, “We’ve met a long time ago. I used to have long hair.” He removed his cap and I said, “Oh, you’re the actor! Yes, I remember you!”

What were your first impressions of John, aside from his being good-looking and attractive?

Priscilla: You know, I don’t really watch TV; I don’t follow TV shows, so I only have a vague idea of who he is. The first time I met him, I liked him because he’s so guapo. But I remember telling him, “You will look nicer if you have short hair.” I don’t like guys with long hair. It looks untidy.

And you, John, what were your first impressions of Priscilla, aside from her being beautiful and sexy?

John: I knew that she was the reigning Miss Earth and I thought, “Wow, she’s gorgeous!” And then things just happened quickly. It was attraction at first sight and, you know, I just wanted to be her friend. There wasn’t any plan; there wasn’t even any courtship. During our third meeting, I asked her, “You are supposed to have a boyfriend, aren’t you?” She shook her head. Then, we started going out.

Priscilla: I used to have a boyfriend (She didn’t identify Marc Nelson. — RFL) From just saying “Hi, hi!” to each other, we began seeing each other more often. He was alone; I was alone, so...

Oh, misery loves company.

Priscilla: I was attracted to him because he happens to be among the few tall guys in town. (She stands 5’10” and John, 6’1”. — RFL)

John: She likes wearing four-inch high-heeled shoes, so when she does she’s an inch taller than me.

Priscilla: I like the way he carries himself, the way he dresses, his style, his whole personality.

Did you know that John is the type of guy who easily attracts women?

Priscilla: Like...all women?

Well, almost — both young and old.

Priscilla: Oh, I didn’t know at that time because, as I’ve said, I don’t watch TV and I seldom read the newspapers. My world is very different. I’m based here now but I travel a lot. When I’m here, I’m busy with work.

How often do you go home to Brazil?

Priscilla: As often as I can. Last year, I was there three times.

John said that there was no courtship at all?

Priscilla: Actually, there was. He told me that he wanted to be my friend. I said, “Okay. Friends are always welcome.” After a while, he started expressing himself more...well, he started saying, “I like you!” And I would say, “Oh, thank you!” He would say, “I really like to spend more time with you” and “Give me a chance?”

No cultural differences between you (just like what happened in the case of Ruffa Gutierrez and Yilmaz Bektas)?

John: None at all. As I said before, she’s more Filipina than other girls from here whom I’ve met.
Priscilla: Filipinos and Brazilians are alike in so many ways — in attitude, in values. Like him, I was raised a Catholic and it’s a plus factor in our relationship. John is very caring and very protective, something that I like a lot. In my previous relationship, I was more like the “mother.” I was the more protective one because my boyfriend was shorter than me.

Are you living together?

Priscilla: Oh, no.

Oh, not yet. But will this romance probably lead to the altar? After all, John is eligible again.

Priscilla (To John): Okay, it’s your turn!

John: Of course, anybody would like a beautiful relationship to last forever. Yes, we have plans...we sometimes talk about it. But it’s too early to tell. Sana nga... matuloy.

Do you see yourself settling down with John?

Priscilla (Looking at John): Why not?

Have you met Priscilla’s family?

John: Not the whole family. I met her brother. They are the only two children in the family.

What about you, Priscilla? Have you met John’s family?

Priscilla: Yes, I have.

By this time, I guess you know the goings-on in showbiz. John is among the most controversial stars in town. Are you not affected by the gossip and intrigue?

Priscilla: Not really. To me, what matters is John and how he is with me. So whatever happened in his past and whatever happens in his professional life is different from what happens when we are together. I admire the way he cares for his children.

Are you close to John’s children (with ex-wife Janice de Belen)?

Priscilla: I think...yes. I think we have a good relationship. They are amazing kids.
Have you met Janice?

Priscilla: No, I haven’t. She must be a very good woman and a very good mother because their kids are great, very well brought up. They are very humble; they don’t pretend to be what they are not.

When you get involved in a controversy (like the “kisscandal” with Gretchen Barretto), does Priscilla ask you about it?

John (Suppressing a smile): You know, I made a promise to her but you know...(Finally breaking into a smile)...Promises are sometimes made to be broken. You know, what I like about Priscilla is that she trusts me. That’s very important for people like us who are working in fields like we do, she in modelling and I in showbiz. I constantly remind her that we need to have mutual trust and respect.

Yeah. Two fields full of temptations.

Priscilla: Much more so in showbiz. John is an actor and he’s in contact with so many other girls. When I met him, it’s already his job, so...

Have you stopped communicating with Vanessa?

John: No more. The last time I talked to her was months ago. Priscilla knows that. I don’t keep things from her. I’ve learned from my past mistakes.

Was there a formal closure between you?

John: Yes, there was. Honestly, we are friends.

Have you exchanged friendship rings to seal your pledge of love to each other?

John: No.

I heard that you cook for John?

Priscilla: It’s funny because I love to cook and I used to cook for friends and for my past boyfriend. But this time, it’s John who does the cooking for me.

Have you developed a taste for Filipino food?

Priscilla: Yes, I have. Before, I couldn’t eat spicy food but now I do. John eats a lot of spicy food.

If and when you get married, how many kids do you want to have?

Priscilla: Two girls. I grew up with only a brother.

And you, John?

John (A naughty glint in his eyes): If she wants only two, then we’ll have only two.

Mariangel Ruiz - Rebel Beauty

Mariangel Ruiz and Miss Universe 2003

One of the more publicized Miss Venezuelas in the recent years has been Mariangel Ruiz , who has been compared to Alicia Machado (Miss Universe 1996). Like Alicia, she came from the city of Maracay, won her national title against every prediction (in a contest where the results are almost never a surprise) and was considered a "rebel" Miss Venezuela. Also, like Alicia, she turned in a spectacular performance at Miss Universe, in comparison to more "conventional" titleholders, and overcame a number of major odds both within and outside her control.

Mariangel Ruiz actually tried twice for the Miss Venezuela title, the first time in 1998 when she did not even place into the top 120 candidates. In 2002, she won the preliminary casting in Maracay, becoming Miss Aragua 2002. Although the 2002 class was perhaps the weakest of the last five years, she was not a favorite and considered finalist material at best. Big favorites were Aida Yespica (Amazonas) and Maria Fernanda Leon (Portuguesa), the only candidates to ever compete twice in Miss Venezuela history (not including Miss Republica Bolivariana Venezuela 2000), as well as Vanessa Fanesi (Yaracuy), Amara Barroeta (Distrito. Capital), Solsiret Herrera (Monagas), and Driva Cedeño (Nueva Esparta). However, when Goizeder Azua of Carabobo was elected Miss World Venezuela and swept the Gala de Belleza preliminary show, a gigantic surprise, it was thought that for this year and for once, all bets would be off.
During the final Miss Venezuela 2002 competition, Gilberto Correa accidentally called out the wrong state (Apure) when Mariangel came onstage for the evening gown segment. Against all prognostications, Mariangel won the pageant, which for the first time was judged entirely by former Miss Venezuelas; her victory was completely unexpected by the contestants, who had thought the crown would go to Melissa Wolf of Miranda or Vanessa Fanesi of Yaracuy, and also by the press and the organization. However, Osmel considered her "rebellious" and threatened to send Amara Barroeta, her first runner-up, to Miss Universe if she did not stop her weight gain and focus on her training. Soon after, a hugely publicized "crisis" emerged in which it was claimed that the Organizacion Miss Venezuela did not have enough hard currency, due to President Chavez's government foreign exchange controls, to pay the franchise fee and send its delegate. At the same time, Osmel Sousa agreed to train Amelia Vega, Miss Dominican Republic, for a week in Caracas while Mariangel was placed on "standby".

When Miss Universe 2003 began, news changed nightly as to whether Venezuela would participate. After weeks of back-and-forth wrangling, including an intervention by the President of Panama, the Cisneros Organization was able to fund Mariangel's travel and she arrived late at Miss Universe 2003, nearly missing the deadline to register. Her semifinal performance was met with mixed reviews, with some critics believing that she might be the first Miss Venezuela in two decades to miss the semifinals (which would eventually happen the following year) and others predicting that her controversies would bring her the crown.

On the final night of Miss Universe 2003, Mariangel broke two conventions: first, she wore her hair down and little makeup, against Osmel's suggestions, and second, she wore a spectacular skin-tight Angel Sanchez crimson gown, becoming the first Miss Venezuela in a decade to not compete in a white, metallic, or light-toned dress. It was a winning combination, and she came off as one of the freshest contestants in history from Venezuela. However, once again the announcers called out the wrong title when she appeared onstage: the order of the contestants was messed up backstage for the swimsuit contest and Mariangel appeared when Cindy Nell of South Africa should have come onstage. Daisy Fuentes then called South Africa twice, to which Mariangel made an infamous (and hilarious) expression of confusion, but her training as Miss Venezuela kicked in and she took the stage with a spectacular performance. The scoring was not affected and Daisy corrected herself as Mariangel left the stage. During the interviews, another kicker arrived when Billy Bush asked Mariangel about her supposed favorite pastime, rappelling and extreme sports. The producers must have gotten confused, as Mariangel does not practice either, and she told Billy so with the comment "I love my life and protect it 100%" rather than lie in front of an international audience of 160 million people. Despite an excellent performance, Amelia Vega was unbeatable and Mariangel came in first runner-up to Dominican Republic, still the best outcome in the last three years for Venezuela. Although Amelia only received a few days of preparation in Venezuela, the executives of Venevision were furious that the winner of the Miss Universe contest had been groomed by their company while their own representative was on "standby" and moreover came in second to her, and banned the Miss Venezuela Organization from training other nations' contestants.

Controversial Zuleyka Rivera

Miss Universe 2006, Zuleyka Rivera, has had her own controversies that made her even more popular as an international celebrity.

After she was crowned as the winner, Rivera fainted briefly during a press appearance. The incident was reportedly attributed to heat exhaustion from the stage lights coupled with the weight of the heavy, chained dress she was wearing.

But "gossipers" did not pick up the story instead they graced discussion boards proclaiming Rivera was pregnant and was in danger of lossing her crown. This was proven wrong when Rivera's belly did not bloat after months.

You can see Rivera being carried by a Miss Universe official off the stage while she was unconcious at a picture just below this text

After her reign, she was linked to a powerful Turkish businessman. She was photographed with Yilmaz Bektaz while flirting with each other.

The news was came from a Turkish magazine. Written in Turkish, the Hurriyet article talked about Yilmaz chartering a plane for Zuleyka to bring her to Istanbul. The article was accompanied by photos, taken by OK! magazine, showing the couple dining at the exclusive Zuma restaurant.

It's interesting to note that Yilmaz was at that time married to another beauty queen, 1993 Miss World Second Princess, Ruffa Gutierrez of the Philippines whom he has two daughters.

Lastly, when she crowned her successor in Mexico City, Riyo Mori of Japan, she was reportedly being so bitch while letting the crown fell off the head of the Japanese. The vibrant personality of Riyo made her prevented the crown from falling.

Nude Miss Universe Winners

NUDE FOR CHARITY: Riyo Mori is the next former Miss Universe who has opted to take off her clothes. Earlier last year, Alicia Machado (1996) posed nude for the Mexican Playboy magazine, and Puerto Rico's Zuleyka Rivera (2006) got naked wearing nothing but Swarovski's jewels. However, Riyo got naked not for money or for pleasure but for charity. Riyo is using her nakedness as part of her campaign against breast cancer. In the photo taken by famous Japanese photographer Mika, Riyo is covering her left breast. She is also wearing a spectacular necklace by Boucheron and exquisite sandals by René Caovila. Just an additional note about Alicia Machado (pictured below), she currently lives in Mexico City. On 25 June 2008, Alicia gave birth to her daughter, Dinorah in a Miami hospital. Machado is reserved about her relationship with the father of Dinorah, who is said to be a 48-year-old Mexican businessman.

According to rumors, the 31-year-old model-turned-actress hasn't revealed the identity of the father because he's allegedly a married man. However, the Venezuelan beauty confirmed in an interview with PEOPLE EN ESPAÑOL that she's kept quite about his identity because he isn't involved in the entertainment world and she'd like to respect his privacy.

The most important task at hand for Machado right now is to raise a healthy daughter, and to give her all the love in the world.

Miss India Nafisa Joseph Commits Suicide

I remember watching the Miss Universe pageant in 1997in Miami, Florida when India almost didn't make it to the semi-finals. That year, Miss India Nafisa Joseph barely missed the cut by a small margin over Miss Philippines Abbegale Williamson Arenas (Abbegale went on to win the Miss Photogenic award) by a fracture .01. Nafisa was the 10th placer in the preliminary with an 8.96 average score while Abbegail was the 11th placer with an 8.95 average score. That was indeed a nerve-wracking moment in the history of Miss Universe.

Nafisa was so beautiful that night. She was like an angel and had a very captivating set of eyes that actually impressed the host, George Hamilton. That was 11 years ago and Nafisa Joseph had long ago joined our creator.

Yes, Nafisa apparently committed suicide leaving no suicide note.

Nafisa Joseph was born on 28 March 1978 in Bangalore, India. She won Femina Miss India in 1997. She had series of physical problems including of an epilepsy but her failed relationships made her decide to commit suicide. Nafiza Joseph was a talented and socially committed person, she must have suffered a momentary emotional trauma that made her take her own life. Considering the life of service that lay ahead of her, her death is a loss that cannot be rationalised.

She killed herself over a dispute with her boyfriend in 29 July 2004. She wasnt successful in relationships. I guess she gave up trying to make it work.

Nafisa Joseph hanged herself in her Versova, Mumbai home. Exactly why she did this is of course not clear but speculation involves the status of her impending marriage. Allegedly, her potential mother-in-law asked her "Do you know they (Gautam - his boyfriend- and his "ex" wife) are not yet divorced?" They were to be married on 7 August 2004 but it had to be called off.

Prior to this, Nafisa had two earlier relationships whom she experienced the same trauma. She was supposed to marry the guys, wedding were set off, but it had to be called off because of infidelity. The first is Sameer Malhotra of Bangalore and the second is Sameer Soni, an actor in Mumbai. Gautam Khanduga is the last man who brought Nafisa to breakdown.

Joseph had worked as a model and had been involved in activities related to animal rights. She was a true lover of animals. She had campaigned for many animal welfare society. Welfare of Stray Dogs and PETA were among such societies. She also had a deep interest in writing. She wrote a column 'Nafisa for Animals' for Times of India. Every girl has a dream of getting married to a person she like. Nafisa too had this dream. She was in relationship with a business with whom she was about to get married. But all of a sudden Nafisa got to know that the businessmen is already married. This incident shaked Nafisa from inside. She fell into a great depression tha lead her to kill herself.

She was 25 years old.

She locked her mother and a friend into an adjacent room in her Bombay flat. She then sent her maid outside the apartment. The maid got worried so she had to call the help of the watchman of the building. Since the watchman can't opened the door Nafisa locked, he made his way through the ceiling of the hallway where he got inside to open the main door. They then opened the room where her mother and friend was held "hostage". When they opened the room of the beauty queen, she was found hung from a ceiling fan gasping for air.

She was immediately rushed to the hospital but apparently she died while they were on way. She was pronounced dead on arrival at 10 pm on the 29th of July 2004.

"Our preliminary investigations show that she committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her apartment," a senior police official told Reuters news agency.

Here are pictures of Nafisa Joseph before she was cremated.

The Best Runway for Model's Fall

I have seen the best runway for models fall. I think there's a curse in this runway and anybody who walk here falls. What a runway? Watch this video for you to understand what I am talking.

Miss World 2005 Unnur Birna Fell On Satge

Since we have been discussing "falling beauties" for the last two days, I give you the last beauty queens I know who also fell on stage.

Miss World 2005 Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir fell flat on her arse after giving a speech at the Miss Iceland 2006. It is also a common knowledge because of its freshness what happened to Miss USA at Miss Universe for the last two pageants. Rachel Smith slipped in 2007 and Crystle Stewart in 20008.

But before I gonna give you the videos of these two ladies showing them falling on stage, you may want to know more about Unnur Birna, the Miss World 2005, the third winner from her country after Icelandic beauties won the same pageant in 1985 and 1988.

Unnur Birna is the lady who beat that year's early favourite and most loved Miss Philippines, Carlene Aguilar and Miss Puerto Rico's represenatative to the Miss Universe 2008 pageant, Ingrid Marie Rivera Santos. Ingrid was that year's second runner up.

Going back to Unnur Birna, did you know that her mother was also a Miss Iceland in 1983? Did you know also that Iceland during the Miss World pageant that year was pregnant and that baby is no other than Unnur Birna?

Her mother, Unnur Steinsson, won the Miss Iceland pageant in 1983 and was a finalist at the 1983 Miss World pageant. Unnur's mother was 3-4 months pregnant during the 1983 pageant. This was against the pageant rules and warrants disqualification. However, this was not found out until after the pageant was over.

Here is the video of Unnur when she fell.

Here is another video of the fall where you can hear the sarcastic and irritating reaction of one of the hosts.

As for the videos of the two Miss USA, here they are:

2008 Miss USA Crystle Stewart

2007 Miss USA Rachel Smith

As a bonus, here is a video of a model who fell many times on stage in a runway in Paris, France.

More on Falling Beauty Queens

Late 1990's will always be remembered as the year when beauty queens are falling on stage. Miriam Quiambao will always hold the most famous fall of them all- well at least as of now. I mentioned in my last post that Miss Ghana fell also in the Miss World 1998 but don't forget another lady in that same year almost fell while congratulating the winner. She's also from Ghana in the Miss Universe 1998 in Hawaii. Her name is Francisca Baafour Awuah.

Miss Ghana pushed Veruska Ramirez and to newly elected Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam while trying to congratulate her. It's a good thing she was held in the shoulder by the new Miss Universe that prevented her from falling and more embarassment.

The fall almost happened also to Miss France Emmanuelle Chossat in 2003 in Panama. This occurred during the dress rehearsal that was opened to the audience hours before the final contest of the Miss Universe.

And if you think this started only during the late nineties, then you're wrong. In 1965 Miss Universe in Miami, Florida, Miss Colombia Margarita María Victoria Ocampo Gómez fell down gracefully from the stairs and nonetheless she was Top 15.
